Good day (or night) kind and generous folks of Third Gen,
It has been quite a while since I put much thought or time into my Camaro, which when I bought it launched my career of automotive maintenance as it was always broken in one way or another. I remember fondly being 16 and trying to figure out why it wouldn't even try to turn over in the mornings, with terribly neglected electrical connections and a skipped timing gear. Many years later and now with over 200k on the odometer, I am considering a full rebuild of the engine I built and several other upgrades. This beautiful Berlinetta saw everything from my wedding to bringing my wife and new born son across the entire US on orders. I sometimes miss those long drives with cheaper fuel and many miles to go,
I have had the opportunity as a full time mechanic to drive and work on many a performance automobile, from the mundane to the insane. I made a name for myself by building diesel trucks, but in between those projects I built a few Mustangs, Corvettes, and I had a Rolls Royce and a Bentley mixed in. The trucks still hold and keep my attention, and are the focus of my work, but I keep coming back to the simple and exceedingly fun world of third gen Camaros. I suppose it helps that I look at one every time I am in my garage and it gets my blood pumping even in these cold and snowy days.
This year, I am thinking that I will either pull the heads and port and polish them, or replace them with something better. The cam and valve train have to be upgraded to accompany the heads, and I am not sure what way to go as of yet. I would appreciate any advice as I have been out of the performance gas world for quite some time, but I am also thinking of replacing the K member and stiffing up the front end as it has been making some odd noises when articulating these days.
Long story short, I love these cars- but perhaps I just just love this car and the great memories over the years. From Washington to Florida, California to Maine, this car has seen me through so many duty stations and places that it is impossible in my mind to untangle the two. Many thanks to the kind people here who helped when I was young like 5sevenkid and many others, keep doing the good work you do.
