82 Firebird SE Good deal?

Hey all i can pick this car up for a song, was wondering if she is worth it, has the performance suspension and 70,000 miles, its only the a v6 carb. But the car is clean and has never seen snow. Also its my firends dads car and he bought it new in 81. You think this is a good deal for 1200?
origional wheels like nightrider are gone.

Re: 82 Firebird SE Good deal?

Whats the interior look like? If its as nice as the outside I would be all over it. That cars cheap enough that dropping a better motor into it is still within reason. I say go for it!!

Re: 82 Firebird SE Good deal?

Interior is blac with the recaro seats which have had seat covers on them since day 1, its mint. Ill try o get some pics but like i said this car is extremely clean. My plans are a 383 eventualy but for starters a 350.
Only issue is the paint. dulled out from 25 years. But thats a simple squirt to fix . Ill have it painted the origional grey with some metalic in it.

Has anything on that car been changed/modded? Has it been repainted? If it's completely stock and everything is in tact, clean as it appears to be in the pictures...DON'T BUY IT.
70,000miles is nothing on an 82', untouched(except the wheels), unmolested, leave it stock. I've never seen a clean, from the factory, pre 85' third gen. I'm sure they are out there but, very low number. One day that car, even as a V6, will be a show car.

I'm telling him NOT to buy it because that is not the car for HIM. He wants to buy it, then mod it. If it's a car that's already been messed with, go for it...but not a factory original 82'.

Re: 82 Firebird SE Good deal?

I think he means... DONT SELL IT!

And i totally agree if he mods the engine in any way it will lost ALL of its value as a collector... it would be a dire shame... if you want a car with a bigger engine then sell this one in the mint condition for 7800 - 9800 easy and buy one that has the engine you want or just buy another... but for god sakes... dont pull the engine and drop a non matching numbers in that piece of art.

Also I am probably going to email NADA about the pricing guide online because it does not show any SE models which should be have its own gategory.,, just like the TA. for instance Firebird Firebird TA and Firebird SE... THe SE has a more robust insulation package for road noisem and a more robust handling package.... so I don't see why this shouldn't get a higher collectible value over the base model.

He Already bought it, and so the thing we need to do is either convince him not to mod it, or offer to trade it with one that has what he is looking for in similar great shape.

If he does mod it ... heaven forbid, I hope he crates the original motor but it is inevitable that once a bigger engine is in there, he will need to swap out the tranny and beef up the driveline, possibly rear end too... and machine screw new components to the firewall / wheel housing area... once this is done... noone will want to buy it as a collector because all the componentry and guts that ran the original v6 will be pulled and would be a nightmare to reconstruct to the factory specs... also with a different tranny, there will be some mods made where the shifter connects so imagine alot of welding and crap done under the console.. possibly even cutting out parts of the original console for the shift kit

I parted out an '83 V6 car with 50k on the odometer. Needed over 2k to get it road worthy, so I just sold the parts and made my money back. I got alot of flak for it on here, too.

Re: 82 Firebird SE Good deal?

I disagree with that engine mods will necessarily kill the cars value. I upgraded everything on mine to 1990 stuff but retained the stock 82 appearance inside and out. Sure a purist will snivel a little but a person who wants reliability and performance in a older f-body won't care as long as it's not all butchered ... do a nice job and enjoy the great looks of the earlybird I have no regrets whatsoever of dropping a newer drivetrain in my 82. At least I can enjoy the car everyday and it's reliable enough to go anywhere.

Re: 82 Firebird SE Good deal?

Well this car is extremely clean, but i did find another 1. An 84 trans am. So im going to offer this car up for best offer. I have cleaned it up some. And im going to put brand new tires on it and change all the fluids before sale. Make some offers. Cars also going to get buffed out. Id like to get at least 1500. New tires will cost a buck, but i know i cant add 400 to the price. And the fluids should be changed anyway. Rear end, trans, engine, power steering, and the brakes lines. SO make me an offer.

$1500.....hhmmmmmmm. I'd like to buy it, but unfortunetly won't be able to till tax return comes in. You'll probably have it sold by then.
Can you take a picture of the RPO codes so I can see what options it has?

I have a 87 Formula in great shape with a seriously built 350. I might consider a trade. 87 with a 86 hatch, third brake light gone, no emissions, high flow cat, headers, large cam. No rust or dents.

How bad are the tires? If they aren't in that bad of shape, i'd hold off on that. Don't think anyone would want to keep the wheels that are on there now.

Thanks man, that helps a lot. I'm thinking of buying the car if it's for sale, but wouldn't be able to swing $6000.

Re: 82 Firebird SE Good deal?

Who are these collectors of orginal 1982 v6 firebirds? Let's see someone come up with an offer even close to the $6000 value that's been tossed around in this thread. You can get an awesome condition LT1 car or maybe even a high milage LS1 car for that price. I would estimate that $2000 is about the cap. If you think it's a steal at $1500, by all means you should come up with the cash and pat yourself on the back.

Ive got bad news for you.... if $1500 is a ton of money... your extremely poor... and may not even realize it.

Go ahead roll your eyes to NADA, the truth is NADA calculates these prices based on actual real sales rather than speculation, and they dedicate alot of effort and time into making sure they are very accurate. You don't know anything about NADA so go their website, and learn something.

If this car is listed for $7k he will get that much for it if its is in as good shape as he says it is in.

Re: 82 Firebird SE Good deal?

1500 is a steal, and that isn't a base model its an SE.

i hope whoever buys that car laughs all the way to the DMV with the signed title, if they bought it for only 1500, then they can resell it easy on the open market and make an easy $4500-- $5500 cash reward. V6 who cares... there are people that want a car that gets good gas mileage with todays gas prices thats a great deal for some real american steel.

aaactually.. i quite agree that $1500 is a steal. $1500 IS a ton of money for me (thank you for making me feel 3rd world ) but i think this car is worth that and a good bit more. TO THE RIGHT BUYER. Me, i want a beast of a project. somthing that has very little value in its current condition anyways. But this car seems amazingly clean, and classic car guys should really love it if you can find the right buyers. Same people that do restos.
