Beautiful car! I love the color. Good choice on shaving the lock cylinders and antenna. I did that too, but I took it one step farther and shaved the hump on the gas door too.

I was going to do the flush gas door too but just didn't get to it in time. My rims arrived last week and I'm going this week to order tires. I'm going 245/45r17 in the front and 275/40r17 in the back.

Thanks for all the compliments guys. It really makes my day when this thread gets bumped up!

Jeremy - The car looks great... The attention to detail in the paint job really shows.

I was looking on YearOne's website earlier today and I am interested in the same wheels you are putting on your car! I emailed them to ask if they would fit on a thirdgen (since they are second-gen backspacing), but it looks like they are close enough that they should work. I guess I will get to see them on your car before I order mine. One question though, why not go with 275/40/17s on the front as well?

Re: My 1984 Trans Am is Finally repainted in Platinum! Lots of pics!

those rims are gonna look sick on that car! there's a couple people on craigslist selling snowflake rims, but i don't have enough cash for them and i don't think they'd look good on the t/a.

Look good! What are those inserts on your front bumper...the glass black ones that say "T/A"? They give me an idea for mine, but I have the stock plastic bumper ones (I have the formula nose however).

I agree...you need a drop and some wheels!

Re: My 1984 Trans Am is Finally repainted in Platinum! Lots of pics!

chriswenk-
I'm going 245 in the front rather than 275 because I figured that'll just put more stress on the power steering to turn it and create more rolling resistance... basically, I just don't think I need them that wide in the front. I've held off on ordering the tires, but I should be doing so in the next week.

sweetride45-
Those are stock 84 Trans Am bumper inserts repainted gloss black and they also painted the indented region platinum, which was a lot of work for them to do! It looks somewhat similar to the formula bumper at first glance, but it's an entirely different bumper cover and insert for the 82-84 cars. Also, the car already has a prokit installed, so it won't be going any lower.

Okay well they are finally mounted! I also got new center caps and smoked front marker lights courtesy of ebay. There are lots of little things to finish up, but it's really coming together now :-)

The car looks great...I really like the paint color/scheme

Do you have any pics of the car from further away to get a better idea of how the whole package looks with those rims?

haha, right! There's still the interior to finish up, I'd like a new rear axle or atleast new gears and fix my posi... it never ends!

88TPI406GTA- I just snapped those pics in the garage and couldn't really get a full side view. I'll take some more pictures next weekend when I take it out to get inspected and aligned.

Unfortunately, I haven't had it outside in a while Maybe later this week or next weekend. It still needs the door panels installed and a good washing.

Re: My 1984 Trans Am is Finally repainted in Platinum! Lots of pics!

Well I spent the last two evenings working on the interior and giving it a quick wash to get the dust off. I took it for a couple little cruises around the neighborhood tonight and took some pictures in the driveway. I got lots of looks on the road and one interesting conversation. I stopped at the parts store to get amber bulbs for the front side markers, but I saw their cleaner's van outside and when I asked, he said they just closed. He then went on to say nice car and asked what year it was. I said '84 but with the exhaust going maybe he didn't hear me well and said "98?". I said no, '84 and he looked very surprised and said it looks good and sounds like it has some *****. Even though the interior isn't 100% together yet, i'm stopping at a local car show tomorrow night and I'm interested to see what kind of reactions/comments it gets. I'm kinda liking this nice looking f-body thing

my camera isn't very good in night mode. I really wish that last picture came out better. I'll probably take some more tomorrow night at the car show with a better background. I got the passenger seat, headliner and door panels in after the daylight pictures.

Re: My 1984 Trans Am is Finally repainted in Platinum! Lots of pics!

Here are some pictures of the interior. I obviously still have some trim pieces to install.

The dash assembly is from a 1990 bird. I painted the guage surround black and installed polished aluminum trim rings that I picked up a number of years ago.

I decided to go with a Camaro center console. It wasn't a direct fit... it was a bit too tall in the front to fit under the switch plate on the firebird dash. I had to do some trimming to the switch plate and the top of the camaro console to get them to fit. I used an old sun faded upper console for now because i'm going to experiment with some cup holder options. Once I've set what I'm doing, I have a mint condition upper console with no holes to swap in and cut for switches and the cupholder. I also need a new shifter boot and I'm going to install my line lock controls on the shift plate before respraying it black.

The carpet right now is from a 4th gen. I'd like to buy a new carpet for next year, but it might get pushed out longer. It's funny how the flash really makes certain flaws stand out. I'm going to pick up some new black hex screws tomorrow to replace the rusted ones in the steering wheel.

I also want to put a silver firebird emblem as the horn button and have some ideas for an embroidered leather piece to replace the map pocket. This interior stuff is gonna take a while to finish up. there are so many details!

This interior stuff is gonna take a while to finish up. there are so many details!

interior looks awesome! you looking to get rid of any old interior stuff? PM me.

I love you car. I never even considered a color similar to that when I get my car finally repainted, but you definately have me thinking. Those rims couldnt be more perfect. Honestly one of the nicest TA's I have ever seen. Im in it for the long hual myself, when it comes to my car. Unfortunately Im daily driving it at the moment, but I hope when I finally park it and get going on it, it comes out as nice as yours. Congrats. Beautiful car. Its awesome to see another third gen saved...

blacktopking, I'm really happy with the rims too. I was very nervous about the offset working and i think it's good enough... and I'm VERY happy with how they compliment the car overall.

Sable- I really don't have many extra interior parts any more except a bunch of 85-92 firebird shiftplates and a mint 85-92 firebird console.

Robb, thank you!

85maro, you sold it? where's it living now? if you dont mind PMing me what you bought and sold it for, I'd be curious because it could give me some idea of what mine is worth (not that I'm considering selling it!).

Man she sure has come a long way!!!!! You know i personally love the original color but now seeing the finished package i have to admit it looks friggin AWESOME!!!!!! Damn near brings a tear to my eye man lol. Seriously though i am so glad you got the car and gave it new life again. It was easily my favorite car i have ever owned and i still miss it. It really makes me happy to see it in such awesome shape. One of these days we have to meet up somewhere so i can see it in person.

Great looking ride! What back spacing or offset are on the front and rear. Besides smoothing the inner fender, did you have to do anything else to get htem to fit? I want to go with 9" rims with zero off set. That wouldl be 4.5 either side. Am I correct that 4.63" is the max back spacing that we can go?

Job well done! This is inspiring work. With the stock wheels, it looks like something right out of factory (good thing!). But the snowflakes really set it off and gives it that extra headturner look.

The fronts and rears are both 4 7/8" backspacing and bolted right on with no problems. So I can safely tell you that with 17x9 wheels, you can go up to 4.875" with no issue. They are close to the outer tie rod, but it just clears.

When I say smoothing the inner fender, that had nothing to do with making room for the wheels. I had the mounting locations for the coolant overflow bottle and washer fluid bottle made flush with the rest of the inner fender when you look at it from the engine side for cosmetic reasons. It didn't add or remove any clearance for the front wheels.

Thanks KnightmareCS! Looking at it now I can't believe i was debating what wheels to go with and actually eliminated the snowflakes as a possibility for a little while. Now I think they really make the car and tie in the love I have for 2nd gens very nicely.

How mutch space do you have from the rear tire to the trail arm or anything else. Could you have zero ofgfset and make it work? What about an 18 inch rim with 9"width?
