Yet another new user! Hi everyone!

Hello everyone, yup another new user with 100 questions. Just recently started my love for cars, after trading my 1970 chevelle for a motorcycle and feeling like an idiot I decided to start my next very 1st project! I have 0 knowledge in cars but fell in love with my 1992 Formula..... My Formula has a 305 TBI with 700r4 trans and virtually unmolested with 130,000 miles. I saved it from a less than capable do-it-yourselfer mechanic for 2500.00 and I have no idea where to start. My interest are in extreme acceleration not top end. Only things I have done to it so far is new carpet. I get that there are probably 1000 posts for this but hey what else are you doing? Will post pics of it soon. Keep in mind this is completely stock so you 3rd Gen lovers should have a field day!

Re: Yet another new user! Hi everyone!

best advice I can give fits no matter what you are driving. Decide how you want to use the car and how fast you want it to be before you do anything. Building a daily driver that runs 13s is much different than building a race only monster that runs 9s...

True I should of specified, it's my daily driver and would like to have some power to snuff out these 5.0 mustangs that are so abundant were I live, I can not do much with this stock motor

Re: Yet another new user! Hi everyone!

I got my 305 in the mid 13s in the quarter mile, others have went much quicker and made more power since then. Of course you can work with your current engine. Many others will tell you to swap in a 350, which is a solid idea as well. At any rate I'd keep the TBI, it can work and meet your goals and stay at reasonable cost. It's also very reliable. Check out the TBI board on this site and dig around, you'll find some stout machines.

If you want to beat up on old 5.0 mustangs, mid 13s should put you at a respectable point, you'll need minimum 300hp to do that with a decent torque converter and a 3.42 or 3.73 gear.

If you're going the 350 route, I'd run vortec heads, the vortec TBI base with a 454 TBI unit a decent cam. With a good tune that should be good for high 12s pretty easily. I don't spend tons of time on the TBI boards, others there might be able to give you an idea of what they run and what mods they have.

regardless of what you do engine wise, I'd start by adding a set of dyno don's headers and a 3" free flow cat, and a full 3" cat back exhaust. Then I'd install a 3.73 gear in place of the 2.73 rear gear. those 2 mods will give you a great gain and will be a great place to start no matter what engine mods you do in the future.
