Re: 1982 Trans Am, it needs some lovin too

truthfully i dont like those one bit, i think they look gaudy and take away from the appeal of the car. i think the other style hit the nail on the head but these are just ewwy, sorry i really have nothing good to say about them

i know i read that. i just really dont care for them at all. the wheels you bought for it were so right for the car and to me thats just a huge step downward. i havent seen them on the camaro but they just dont work on the T/A

Re: 1982 Trans Am, it needs some lovin too

I just took the time to read thru this whole thread and I must say, this is one of the nicest and most detailed builds I've seen in a while and I love seeing a fellow '82 TA get the executive treatment. Don't step down to those wheels, please. They may look just fine on the Camaro, but they do not match this car at all.

One more thing, absolutely amazing work you've done, it's very inspiring!

Re: 1982 Trans Am, it needs some lovin too

I've never been a very big fan of the C6 wheels personally. They are nice wheels, but just don't seem right on most 3rd gens IMO. I absolutely LOVED the multi spoke gold rims you originally planned on using though! I would change the brakes around to fit those wheels. I know it's kind of a pain in the butt at this point, but like they say, a set of wheels can make or break a car. Those other gold wheels you had are dead sexy!

Re: 1982 Trans Am, it needs some lovin too

I hate wheels with adapters, I will not use them period.

These are the same wheels how they should look on my camaro. I agree, it works a lot better on this car, especially because the 5 spokes remind of stock

The M6 wheels are gone. My buddy has them. His other camaro and my gray one have them too. I wanted something different and wanted concave wheels in matte black.

Must be because I got the wheels off a bmw pic so it has rubber band tires and the size looks too big. I got 19s and will run a lot more sidewall

Re: 1982 Trans Am, it needs some lovin too

Decided to get another tank so I could weld in a sump, would be a shame to cut up the already powdercoated one. This one, being from a TPI car has an internal plastic baffle that caught fire when I welded the tank. Took some grief getting it out completely since one can't reach in there with a hand to pull it out.

Had to mod the sump to angle the back side so it would fit the tank

Also got my LS T56 in, swapped it with a guy in the UK who needed an LT unit. Along with my mockup LS I'll be able to get a good bit of stuff done soon

The hubs for the C5 brake conversion were bare, I hate bare metal so...I had it plated While I was at it, I installed longer ARP studs. I thought I had ordered dog/quick start ends... I got these. Oh well...

now I'm not feeling the rough finish on the calipers. They have dents and scratches.... and "corvette". I'm leaning towards painting them

Re: 1982 Trans Am, it needs some lovin too

More progress got the tank back from the coater and a bunch of bolts and misc parts back from the platers.

I stuck some heavy duty foam rubber to the tank, much better than the paper like factory stuff

Welded the unused lines on the sender unit closed, the hose is for the pressure valve.

front suspension all together. Had to shim 3 of the 4 a arm munt pockets because of play on the bushing. Also used washers on the bolts and nuts, I hate to scratch the coating with bare bolts and nuts

Fays2 watts linkage for the rear, still need that 9 bolt girdle cover and some caliper brackets to complete it. I did install the arp studs on the axles now too.

and the tank in place The sump isn't even visible from behind the car

Re: 1982 Trans Am, it needs some lovin too

Yes rears too. Weird thing though, this is the 2nd vogtland set I have. the rears on these have pigtails on both ends and only fit without the insulator. They might be too low, they sit completely loose so I'll have to get some limiter straps. Funny thing is, I needed exactly those springs for my monte carlo ss and paid top dollar for 2 drop springs for that car since they needed the pigtails on both ends. I could have used these I may have to get some normal drop springs, maybe bogtland sent me the wrong ones...not sure yet.

Re: 1982 Trans Am, it needs some lovin too

Looks awesome as always! I had to shim the A arms to the tubular K with a few big washers as well. You'd think that on a matching setup from the same company that they'd line up but oh well. Not a big deal. I love the sumped tank too! If I have any problems down the road with my 4th gen tank and dual walbro setup, thats the route I'll most likely take.

Also wanted to ask you about that fays2... In your opinion, does it really make a big difference over the factory setup in terms of handling and rigidity? And does it remove any of the factory components when using it, like the torque arm? I have really been thinking of putting one on my car down the road if it's worth it.

Anyways, keep up the great work!

I only have a couple miles on the fays2 on my camaro, car is not roadworthy yet but it did feel better than stock during hard cornering

The fays2 eliminates the panhard bar and panhard support.

Fays 2 has nothing to do with ssm bars, ssm bars are junk if you ask me, fays2 replaces the panhard setup for lateral axle positioning.

Bought the rims here in NL

Re: 1982 Trans Am, it needs some lovin too

It's not structural, it controls the lateral placement of the rear axle, what the panhard does on the stock suspension. Fays2.net is the website I think. It's around 700 or so.

Re: 1982 Trans Am, it needs some lovin too

well it looks as though it eliminates the panhard sway bar and that other frame mount thing correct? and then those two adjustable rods act like an adjustable panhard and can control placement of the axle? can you take a picture of how the two "arms" are connected to the center of that unit. im interested in this

correcting myself, it still utilzes the sway bar i see

Yes, the panhard bar and panhard support bar.

Read this explanation

The 2 arms connect to the axle, this is my 87 camaro with the unit already installed

Re: 1982 Trans Am, it needs some lovin too

haven't put a lot of miles on it,, some tight cornering in the streets here and in the area around the shop. It does feel better than stock and my stock stuff was not very worn, all bushings looked good. I'm sure the improvement is partually from all new hardware but still....I think it does feel better

It's basically a watts link. It's the closest you can get to making a live axle have similiar properties to an independant rear suspension set up. Instead of the factory design, where the up and down axle movement relies on the panhard rod, the watts link lets the axle rotate at the center where the meatball is. This gives both ends equal travel and there is no binding up at all when hard cornering. With the factory design, the panhard rod is connected at the end of the drivers side of the axle, and connected to the frame at the pass side by the wheel. While it works good, it's not optimum since you lose "equal" travel on both sides, and the odd shape of the panhard bar is wanting to pull or push the axle to one side during hard cornering.

I'd love to get one. The Saleen "dan gurney" edition mustangs have a factory watts link installed and from what I hear, they handle amazingly.

Don't want to share rim brand in fear of someone copying them. They are 19x8.5 and 19x9.5 w/ 265/30/19 and 295/3/19 tires. Wider would have easily fit in the rear but couldn't find a wider tire here. The tires are Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta

Misaligned? There's nothing wrong with the car apart from a little aggressive camber setting

camber has to do with alignment, it looked like the wheel was off a little

Re: 1982 Trans Am, it needs some lovin too

I know what alignment is about, I have 2 alignment machines and usually do my own aligning I have played around with it a little. This was good for cornering...not so much for tire wear. The old tires are bald on the inside.

Re: 1982 Trans Am, it needs some lovin too

OK more progress. I was going to install the mockup LS1 and T56. Didn't quite get it done.

First I installed a remote bleeder setup on the T56. This is from speedwaymotors

Then I found out that some of the bolt holes on the T56 bell are stripped and the others aren't perfect either. I may have to get a quicktime 8020 bell. Crap!

Well, let's install the motor first then... OK, trans dapt 1" offset mount plates. They come with bolts and nuts, the nuts are for on the back of the plates to provide more "support". What a load of hoohah.... they only fit in 1 of the locations. In the bolts bin with that stuff then. Also had to notch the dr. side a little or it wouldn't even fit the motor because of a casting bulge with a machined flat (most likely for maching track system)
So, the plates are mounted...time to stick it in. Batwing pan won't fit, next to impossible to install. Need new pan too then. Crap!
So let's just lower the engine in place... Pass side bolt goes in, nice...over to drivers side.. CRAP!!! again!!!!! This stuff doesn't fit. The motor mount adapter plates are probably made incorrect with the mounts sitting too high, spreading them apart. The engine also sits pretty close to the center link. I couldn't even get a thinner bolt in there properly. Crap crap crap...more problems, last thing I need is more probs. I'll have to do some grinding on the moroso solid mounts, I had to modify the 3 holes on them already to be able to bolt them to the trans dapt plates. Should have been worried with these plates since they came with a cheap rattle can paint job. I had them plated. Next time I'm using a different brand, that's for sure.

I installed some 14" rear discs, I'm not 100% sure I like having larger rear rotors than fronts.... hmmm....

The black wheels from my iroc fit with a small spacer for added clearance

front

Re: 1982 Trans Am, it needs some lovin too

rear

The rear springs I got from Vogtland are probably wrong... they have pigtails on both ends, are pretty short and don't sit tight around the puck on the axle. Something is not right. Haven't gotten confirmation off the part # yet. I do know that my old set that I put on my buddies car because mine was up on the lift and his needed work anyway...they were different. They were pigtailed on one end.

the front now has me worried too, the others didn't have so many progressive coils up top and on these the upper 4 coils almost touch and the springs are now very stiff. I had to really squeeze them to get 'em in. Let's install wheels then and see where it settles. There's no engine or trans in the car but it sits ridiculously high. I don't see it coming down all that way. I stuck the LS long block in and it only dropped a little. CRAP!!! Looks like even more trouble.

Yuck!!!

Something must be wrong about these springs. I can probably cut 2 coils off the top. I'll check w/ all the weight on the car and will determine what to do then.

This is the rear with some cut stock springs, the same that were on there in this pic

Re: 1982 Trans Am, it needs some lovin too

compared...the rear will settje like it did with the black springs.. The vogtlands are shorter and because of the 2 pigtails can not use the isolator. Ugh...

I think I will have some bolts left over when done LOL

Now off to photoshop the look of the wheels with a low car......brb
