The vin just says trans am... the wheels the seats the facts are all there it is a true gta a but still am not satisfied because it dose not have the y84 in the glove box bc the stickers missing is there any other way to tell

if you can provide pictures of the car, there are a lot of people here who can identify the car and the stuff thats on it. pictures are worth about 1000 words... hard to believe but its true

Without the Y84 there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY to identify it as a true GTA. Nothing in the VIN with tell you GTA, not even that "eigth digit in the VIN should be a 8 got a 350". TAs got 350s too so that is no help. Just tells you what was in the car the day it rolled out of the factory. Nothing but the Y84. Everything can be duplicated expect the Y84.

 

It doesn't have the air vent behind the front wheels on the front fenders. That makes it a GTA unless somone changed out the front fenders. It's pretty easy to tell if they did because the original fenders have a VIN sticker on them that are clearly visible where the horns are.

The GTAs were not the only ones to not have the vents. Base Firebirds with V6s. Formulas and base V8 Firebirds also didn't have the vents. So vent or no vent means little. RPO code Y84 is the ONLY thing that defines a true GTA.

 

If the VIN says Trans Am, then it's a GTA because it doesn't have the air extractors on the front fenders. Otherwise the VIN would say Firebird, right? You're good man, don't worry about it!

 

His VIN says Trans Am, so therefore if it has no vents then it either had the fenders changed or is in fact a GTA. Not sure the exact year off the top of my head they went to putting the RPO sticker in the rear locking compartment in the trunk, but try checking there too.

 

Exactly my point. The RPO sticker is in the center console of my '89 GTA.

 

Just a shame compnine is out of business or he could put his VIN in there and find out.

 

The SPID sticker is never a guaranteed thing in any3rd gen. Despite where the assembly line people were SUPPOSED to put it, that certainly doesn't mean it got put there.

As a 87 GTA owner myself, I've also done all the research & reading on the GTAs so I understand what you were saying, but others reading might not read everything (commonly done) & read your statement not understanding the whole TA/GTA vent/no vent thing. I was clarifying your statement, which in & of itself, was incorrect without the supporting information.

 

i verified my gta missing the spid with an android app called vinWOW. just for comparision i ran my rs vin through it and it didnt come back as an iroc as most vin decoding websites do. showed some options on both cars as well.

 

on my insurance card it says GTA trans am..
