Been looking for a GTA or Z 5spd for a while. Found this 1987 GTA recently, which will need a fair amount of work on the interior and body. Guy says it runs and drives well but needs tires and parking brake cable. Haven't seen it in person because it's a couple hours away. I've got an idea what kind of offer I'm willing to make but I welcome your thoughts.
His initial ask was 4500 but he's somewhat flexible.
I was hoping some folks here might be able to ballpark a figure based on the few pics.
Pics of the floor, frame, wheel arches, engine bay, all that stuff would be helpful. I think $4500 is a bit much, but if frame and body is solid, engine is immaculate and it needs new paint and new interior, then it's not as bad of a deal. However, a car that looks beat to hell, most of the time is thoroughly beat to hell.
I'd be offering less than half that price based on condition in the pictures.
What is the drive line and how many miles?
125k miles. Everything original. Seller says engine, tranny, drive train are good. I'm not afraid to do work on the appearance but I agree that ask was quite high. Thing is these GTA 5 speeds don't come along every day.
Check the RPO codes and look for GM3 - only 706 TA's & GTA's (no further breakdown) were built in 1987 with the 3:45 axle ratio and this would likely be one of them.
Bargain hard and get it cheap - there's a bit of work to be done there.

Just curious - what was the ratio of irocs to gtas built ? Probably 2 to 1, right ?

Yep, I had him send a pic of RPO codes to confirm Y84. Also confirmed GM3. Curious why you thought that likely, did all 5 speeds have 3.45?
$3k was also my thought on absolute top dollar for this condition. A little worried about what it's gonna take to get it right. Stay tuned.
