Well, I thought I had found a place cheaply enuff in So . MD for a track and park, but seems some don't like the idea of it in So. MD.

The hold up is finding a decent price for a track. So, how important is a track to everyone?

I mean I could BS about cars with over 100 people for 2 days no problem, at a park , a police caravan and drinkin maybe.

But I need some feedback, I'm still waitin to hear back from a track or 2 though.

Exactly, at our last meet with 23 of us, I didn't get to talk to like 1/2 the guys that much.

By track, we mean *road track* right?

I love corners and most of all, braking (not parts breaking...) and an opportunity to race around a track among other 3rd gens would be awesome.

I'd love a track, but it's not that important. I'm coming from Raleigh, NC, so... pretty much no matter where it's at, it's going to be a long drive. If I'm not mistaken, though, there is a road course near the NC/VA border. But that's selfish of me to suggest so close to my house.

I know that many of you don’t recognize me, but I do spend some time on the other forums and Mark S. keeps poking me to pay attention, so I am…

A couple of thoughts that I’ve been having:
- this sticking information in message board threads is a PITA, even for the computer literate out there. EX, I can’t get broadband where I’m at (Metro DC, believe it or not) and it’s a hassle to keep track of even to 2 or 3 threads on the subject. Can’t someone get a space off the main page (say something like www.thirdgen.org/MA_Event) that you can post basically the flyer and any pertinent information and then also a link to the forum if they want to get involved in the planning? I can guarantee that you’ll loose people that would otherwise be interested with the long link on the flyer that basically just points at the forum and not at any specific information. You know, one place to look that will have to most current information, the basics, and is easy to find… People are lazy, and those that aren’t don’t have so much time to waste.
- If you really want to draw a crowd, treat it as an event. If you want to see 20 or so cars, then treat it as a bunch of guys gathering in a parking lot. By treat it as an event, do it at a track and have something organized, even if it’s just a bracket race for bragging rights (I don’t know that any track that would bother with dealing with a group that would consider this anything more then just part of dealing with a group). Put it on the flyer. Similar thing if it’s not at a track. Make it worth, and look like it’s worth driving a couple hours to see. Don’t make it a “well, if it’s close by and I’m not doing anything else” event, make it “tell the wife to make sure not to plan anything on this day 3 months in advance, ‘cause we’re going racing” thing.
- If you want to attract attention, give GMHTP a call, I’m sure they’d like to cover a real gathering of 3rd gens. I bet you’d double attendance by adding the possibility of getting your car in a rag…

WRT to tracks, the 2 in the area that I know are really cool with this sort of thing are MIR (southern MD) and Beaver Springs (sorta south west PA). I’ve seen some of the others entertain stuff like this but it usually ends up an excessive PITA or $$$ to get them to actually agree. MIR does a big event with the Mid Atlantic F-body list ( www.mycar.net/mafb ) usually 2x a year and smaller ‘private track rentals’ probably once per month. “Beaver Bob” in PA is so flexible about his kind of thing that it even works out with as few as 10 participants. I haven’t been there but I keep hearing how good the track prep can be (I’ll know after the JY Turbo shootout in 2 weeks…).

Sorry if I sound like “super critical new guy,” but I would argue it’s more like “short attention span, would like to be more involved guy, thinking out loud.”

I dont really care about a track... i already went to Capital and ran my car 5 times...

I dont really want to go to another track because i dont plan on doing any mods to my car. so the times i have are what the car is going to run... I know i am slow and should mod my car but i like it stock..

Maybe i could buy a project thirdgen and mess with that.. and that could be my street/strip car.. but i dont feel like blowing my savings just yet...

So i am all for just the park/meet idea..

Like I said before, there's no way I'm running at a track that's far away from my house. With my luck, I'd break at the tree (happened twice already at Englishtown Raceway Park, very frickin' embarassing), and need to pay $1000 for the car to get towed home. So a track isn't important to me... if we did get a racetrack, I wouldn't even run.

have to say i'm w/ mdv6man, (but i would never let my baby hear me calling her a POS!!!!!!) and not liable to spend the whole day running, even tho i wouldn't mind watching others. but, being the "broke college students" we are that someone mentioned b4, if our renting a track is gonna cost me mucho Xtra bux to go to the meet/event/whatever, that will definally turn me off.

also have to consider, mark are you personally gonna RENT the track? they'd want a hefty down payment or something wouldn't they? would you be taking a collection from everyone, (mark becomes drill sergeant) or expecting people to pay as they get to the meet (mark goes broke when people have 2nd thoughts about driving so far only to have to pay to get in.........)

just looking out 4 ya

Well, I wasn't goin to pay more than $30 per car to run. And I was goin to take a collection, no way I could fund that money by myself. I was going to PM people my address, phone # or any other info that would make them feel comfortable to send me money for this.
But, I'm thinking maybe a track is out now, maybe just BSen , camping, caravan, and stuff like that, but we'll see.

like 83 crossfire said we can try to get some mags to come and check it out. if there would be like a 100 thridgens thats alot of camaros and firebirds. we should try to find a fairgrounds and set up a show. even if ur car is a p o s it doesnt really matter its about how many thrid gens we can get together. if we set up a show then people can bring some parts they want to get rid of and sale them. i think i said in another post try to get lik spohn perfor. , thunder racing, gt auto and more thrid gen aftermarkt people to come and show off some parts. they could also bring some parts out to buy and stuff (save us on shipping). at a fairgrounds we could just camp there maybe set aside a part of the parkinglot for people that want to race. there was a car show up here where people set jars beside there car and people put in like a dollar to vote for that car. then is this case the person with the best thridgen would get the trip paid for or something along these lines. well i figured i would voice my opionon again

The two questions should be more like!

Do you want to run at the track at the 3rd gen meet?

Yes
No

How important is a track at the 3rd gen meet?

Very important otherwise screw it I'm not coming.
Not important because we'll be able to hang out and still have fun talking with 100+ people for two days at a park!

Obviously this is JM2C and no harm no foul

Personally, I could go either way. There are two options:
A.) Find a park close enough to a track, camp there and go racing

or

B.) Find a park NOT near a track, camp, eat, drink, shoot the bull, meet new people, and FIND a place to do a little racing. Even if theres no track, I'm sure all of us will be able to find something to do to occupy the weekend. i.e., volleyball, softball, football, etc.

Actually, forget what I said at the top of this post. I'd rather have no track b/c option B gives us a better chance to get to know each other.

Once again, just my $.02

ditto on that.

i'm with tomp on the no track.. i'm lookin bout 400 miles one way for this. no way i'm going to chance breaking that far from home.

now, if one of my buddies were to follow with a trailer and truck, it'd be a different story.

i'll be camping somewhere, especially if it's at a park. if the camaro isn't running, i'll prolly still show up just to meet everyone.

i'd rather do the campout, campfires, etc. if you're at a track, you're not going to get a chance to meet everyone.

i'd rather meet as many as possible, rather than race at a track.

Now just get it linked off the site somewhere easy to find...

You can make the directions to get to the board a link to take you straight there...

Which track?

right on, mark!

the sunday caravan to a track isn't a bad idea.

that way we have two days to look at cars, fri and sat. get to know each other, etc.

mebbe a cruise sat night or something.

i'm still game for this, regardless. i'll prolly watch, wrench in the pits if i can help, etc.

we could make it a sat/sun thing but there are people coming from far away and i know i would be there fri night just to hang out at the camp site. and get ready for sat/sun, make fri the getting together day/night, don't need to do anything that night, just let people know that there will be a few people at the camp site getting set up already.

Now that I think of it forget the track I may have alot more fun without it. Football would be awesome...tackle of course...or even better drunkin football! Anyways camping and a 3rd gen show would be awesome im all up for that. I will probably make a few runs at the track if my car is stable by next summer.

there is alot of stuff you can do at the site
I'm thinking a car show.
best of show
best camaro
best firebird
oldest driver award
youngest driver award
longest driven award
police escort

stuff like that. stuff bikers do at rallys we could use that weekend, because well its the same thing, bunch of guys (and gals) getting together because of a common interest.
stuff like that needs money,
that is why you start a pre-resister
say $5-$10 a pop, that way you can pay for the parade permit, plaques, banners, etc.
say you get 100 people
that is $500-$1000.
everyone gets a packet mailed to them.
campground info
track info
show times
a mapquest print out.

stuff changes if you rent a track.
doing a pre-register at say $30 a pop will give you the money to rent the track, and don't rent, reserve the track till you get the minimin amount needed.
stuff like that,
just ideas
just keep good account on the books and what ever is left over from expenses goes to a keg or two on sat night.

one way to raise money on site is called a 50/50 raffle.
you get raffle tickets and sell them say 1 for a $1 and 8 for $5 or something like that, what ever you make 50% goes to the winner, and 50% goes to the "pot" for say to off set expenses, and if there is a surplus, more beer!!!!

BikertrashDude I like your plan because:
- it's a plan that will attract many more people
- you've built in the perfect contingency... it seems like no matter what happens - more beer!!!

WRT to the drunken tackle football... can I play? I'm about 6'4" and somewhere north of 300# (and just put up a 500# incline press last week )...

I've never seen an f-body crowd crude enough that I would think that would be a problem, and most big guys like me are fairly harmless (sometimes you gotta watch out for them dwarves, you know, anyone under about 6' or so )

Great idea, guess I'll go out tomorrow and buys some Camaro/Bird mags, unless someoen knows of their site to save me money.

Oh and keeping a good book, I'm an acct major if I can't do that , then I should just drop out.

I actually went cruisin tonight and saw alot of 3rd gens...BUT I FORGOT THE FLYERS!! Man im kicking myself. There was only one RS worthy enough to go IMO. There were 3 IROCs parked together but they were all turds...i wouldnt even park my car beside them...Only 3rd gens that are even in decent shape around here are driven by teenagers!! The rest are driven by hilljacks and old women...damn i hate the image our cars have. Oh well I know I dont fit in that crowd....

Ok anyways. It would be awesome to get a few magazines out there. Man if i could get a picture in a camaro magazine id be in heaven. I already managed to get in one of the biggest paintball magazines out. Paintball Games International.

So we are gonna camp in tents? instead of hotels? thats cool id rather do that and stay pretty much for free instead of spending 100$ on hotel rooms. I aint skeered to sleep on the ground. although if i bring a lady friend i will be staying at a hotel for obvious reasons

Man, I wouldn't base it on how the cars look. Sounds like you had a few there that were at least enthusiasts. The unfortunate fact is that I'd bet half of us have ratty 3rd gens that we want to clean up but have other priorities. I can think of half a dozen ratty looking 3rd gens that are really sweet or at if nothing else unique under the bodywork.

Personally, I've got 2 ratty 3rd gens (a nice 4th gen and truck and the wife's sunfire), but I'm betting that some of you would like to see the twin turbos on the L98 in the Formula when they're done (even though the car has no front bumper right now, it should next spring).

And yea, I hate the image also. That's the biggest reason I bought the 4th gen, trying to find something that I could like so much without as much of the image. It didn't work...

...

Exactly, I've put flyers on some real $hit bags. Cause you know why, they may just be an enthusiast that just doesn't have the money they would like to sink into it, like some of us, know what I mean? Can't hurt to put a flyer on it.
But yeah , I've kicked myself several times about forgettin flyers in the past. And you don't know how many times I've past one on the highway, that I just wish I could reach my arm out and give a flyer.
