my friends tried the install. we couldnt get the old trans to drop out though. the custom exhaust was in the way. we removed cat, y pipe, etc. and figured out that the header was still in the way. they did not want to be responsible for anything, so we slapped it all back together as it was. we figured if i gotta drop the money for a mechanic to do a complete trans swap. I might as well drop the bit of extra money to get a new, built trans with a warranty.

alright well the actual tranny is the most expensive part...not the install...id think so at least. If the tranny is only 15k rebuilt why just use that? Just seems odd to me if it was recently rebuilt. I do understand that a shop is not going to give you a warranty on a tranny you bring to them but still do you not have faith in the one you just bought then?

no, but you can find a nice new built one for about 600 bucks. and i dont know if my motor will tear up a stock tranny like it did with my original one.

Keep looking. Good parts alone will cost nearly that much. Does that include a core?

yea. im also looking at this mad dog company and monster motorsports. found them on ebay but they actually do a lot of other business too. the mad dog company would be like 900 shipped and the monster company would be 925 shipped with a converter...but i dont need it. they both have warranties to handle motors under 500 hp.

Try Pro Built Automatics. More money, but you get what you pay for.

pro-built.net

also try

700raptor.com

Those are good if you want to go mail order. You could get a local shop do do it too. Just tell them how much hp you want it to handle.

You got a stock motor ? How much HP? You probably don't need much more than a stock rebuild. A shift kit and a corvette servo.

you do realize going with a "Mail Order" trans they only pay for the parts NOT the labor? best bet would be stop trying to throw bad money after bad money and get it built locally. that way if it does go up they will pull it back out and redo it at no charge unless you like spending money on labor.

Yep, you're going to have to pay someone to put it in and take it out. BUt a Pro Built won't break.

with 385 ft/lb you don't need a built trans. A stock rebuild with some good clutches/steels, shift kit and maybe even a "beast" sunshell while it's apart. That's not a ton of power. The stock trans probably wore out, not break from tons of power.

yea, but im getting an hsr next. plus i think im pushing more torque because im running tpi and the motor was tested with a carb. and i figure if im spending the money for a new trans i might as well get a built one. im really thinking of just going with a th350 though. its so much less money. plus i have another friend coming over maybe this weekend, if not next weekend, and hes a certified ford mechanic. so we should be able to tackle it. do you think i should use that one i picked up from you?

TH350 swap will cost you just as much. You'll need a crossmember, aftermarket torque arm, cooler lines, trans mount, another converter and maybe a flexplate. All for a sub 400ft/lb motor.

Good advise. Pro built has the reputation. I do not know of anyone who has a negative thing to say about Dana. If i could not build my own, I would buy one of his in a minute. Quality cost money. He is also a forum sponsor. Help the people that help us.

Actually, if you noticed, I answered that by saying that i did not have the stock motor.

A shift kit vette servo and h/d reaction shell is all I am running in my car. Do not take offence at my comment. Baloney is filling my belly just fine

How much would it cost to get you to build just that...i could send you a b&m kit too, I got one right here. Also, how long would it take? I dont need that 5200 rpm shift governor either. and I can send you a new governor to put in when i send the shift kit over to you. and of course, I could pick up when you are done.

I just sold the 89 trans I have listed in the for sale section. To build a decent 700r4 with:
8 friction 3/4 pack
heavy duty reaction shell
kevlar band
.500 boost valve
vette servo is $600

This assumes you supply your own converter and speedo gears.
This also assumes you trade an equal 87 1/2 - 93 core (must have aux valve body). If you supply the governor of your choice and the shift kit (B&M) as you suggested, there is no charge for these. Shipping NOT included. I have 3 to do at the moment. That should occupy a couple weeks of my time.

I would come pick it up from you. i could spend the couple bucks to ship the shift kit. i might take you up on this offer. would you want an 86 core. im pretty sure you can swap in the valve body. i mean just to take a little off the core charge, not for the full amount. and also a stock converter...would that help you because i dont need it.

alright i talked to a fellow third genner for like 2 hours today. hes actually on the boards i found out. hes like 83 crossfire ta or something. he works at the local speed shop. im going to keep the 90 trans and throw in a trango shift kit. along with the converter and the cooler i think that should cover it. is there anything else i should do while im at it that isnt too hard? i think the transgo kit comes with a servo and a boost valve, so no need for those.

There are 2 weak links in a 700r4. The first is the 3/4 clutch pack. Even in stock stuff they die early. The 2nd weak point is a hard part. That is the reaction shell. It tends to snap off at the base where the splines are. Then it tears out the sun gear and sometimes the plantary. Both these parts are internal and not easily replaced.

does the transgo kit come with the 3/4 clutch pack? and can you send me a picture of the reaction shell? is this an internal part? or does it mess up internal parts?

The 3/4 clutch pack is located in the input drum. Reaction shell is located in the center of the trans. The reverse input drum splines into it and the sun gear splines into the other side. Replacing both involve total dissassembly of the trans. Shift kit will not address these issues. The reaction shells are a big problem. I see them break in low hp s10 pick up trucks.

Both. I have seen 400 hp cars never break a reaction shell. I have seen grandma driven, 6 cyl, break them. Go figure. It is a crapshoot. I install a beast in evry trans I do. I also upgrade the 3/4 on every one. The level of upgrade depends on power made. I upgrade them all anyway. I just put together a 4wd truck trans. It got a beast and an 8 friction 3/4 pack. Heavy hp stuff gets treated differently.

would the transgo kit prevent this from happening?

No, if it is healthy, it should hold up reasonably well for the power you are making. At the very least it will get you by until break it or decide to upgrade it. You already own it. If it breaks, then you could buy or build a good one. Choice is yours. Maybe you will be lucky and it will last a long time. Only time will tell..........

Tail shaft is cracked? Or the tail housing is cracked? If it is either the trans may have come out of a wreck. wiggle the output shaft to be sure it does not have excessive play. This could be trouble if it does.
