Can the Mid-Atlantic Do Better?
I am from the Mid-Atlantic and was just up in Maine last week. I came across a pretty beat up Firebird right near the campground where I stayed. Red paint curling up on the backend, cracked windshield, tan interior was dirty but looked good, automatic trans, t-tops, no visible rust. Supposedly a new motor, but the thing is sitting strategically beneath a tree so that it looks good from the road and there was literally a film of dust on it. (In other words, it clearly has been sitting for awhile, and I would want to see it run before I believed that it actually had a new engine.) They wanted $1800 for it, which was a little too much considering the condition that it was in, unless the motor really is new. It would make a fantastic KITT conversion, if that is your thing, because nobody could feel bad about doing anything to this car. Now on to my question! Maine winters have got to be pretty hard on this type of car, but can the Mid-Atlantic region do any better? My uncle said so, but I haven’t seen any nicer cars for sale here that didn’t cost an arm and a leg. Most of the Third Gens in this area that are for sale for less than $5000 (no offense intended by this) are junk. I understand that any car less than $5000 is going to need work, but the junk that people are trying to sell for $3500 should be going for $500. And the crazy part is that people actually think that they are going to get their asking price (while the car rots in their front yard, thus lowering the value even further). It makes me so frustrated. Last year there had to be at least three Trans Ams alone in the newspaper every single week, now there aren’t any, and you’re lucky to even find a Third Gen. Thankfully there are a lot of nice ones driving around in this area, so at least we know they’re out there. Sorry for all the ranting.
P.S. I just stumbled across a really nice Formula for sale at a reasonable price on this forum, so my faith in the Mid-Atlantic hasn’t been completely lost!
