I have a couple of 700R4 transmissions for sale. I usually sell these for $300 each but am asking $250 for these to try to get rid of them quick. Both are in excellent working condition and come complete with the torque converter. E-mail me if you're interested.

is there a difference in 87 and the 88-92 700-r4's???

why do shops ask for 88+ to rebuild or say they only use 88+ 700-r4's?

Yes, the later transmissions received internal improvements to make them stronger.

yes, but what if you were to rebuild either one.........then would there be any difference. does it cost more to rebuild an 87 to the same specs as an 88?

My understanding was that the case was different and that you could not upgrade the earlier trans to the better specs.

The later transmissions have a revised input drum that solves a lot of problems earlier transmissions had with the 3-4 clutch pack. Also, the pump body was revised to make the trans more durable. The improvements can not be done to the earlier style transmissions.

so what your saying is that what you can do to an 88-92 you CANNOT do to a 87?

all i want to know is am i hurting myself trading my trans for an 87 and some cash since i'm just going to tear mine apart and rebuild it? i'd rather someone get one that works and i can get some money for it and put it towards the rebuild.....no one seems to know this answer though.

Actually, I believe all the improvements were made for '87. That means you would be fine swapping for that trans. However, I have heard some people claim '88 was the first year of the stronger trans. I'm almost positive the '87 transmissions were the first year to receive the upgrades. I know B&M divides their trans kits into '83-'86 and '87 and up.

The trans was actually divided into three era's 82-84 the weakest, 85-87 better and 88-92 the best.

The 88-92 are the strongest core you can start with.
