I've never went around looking to run anyone. I mind my own business. I actually had some kid the other day revving his Neon next to me - IN DOWNTOWN RACINE!! Uhhh yeah kid.......take it to the track (preferrably) or out on a country road (still not legal though).

well none of my friends run honda's so thats the big issue. they all run stock turbo cars. 1.8t jetta, a 2.6t conquest(fast), twin turbo rx7(he's fast also)and acouple other non turbo's.
Here a question. about the 305's how much can they handle?
everybody keeps telling me toss it and get a 350. hell for the price the guy is offering its hard not to take it.
I still dont have the car yet. the seller still doesnt have it back from the paint shop. he said he would have it today and i havent got called by him so i dont think he got it. i want to get it to the track next week and get some base times before the white stuff comes. next year will produce alot of grudge matches. and i am suer i will be at next years muscle vs imports day at the grove.

OK .....In that case, the cheapest way to go would be a 350, and stroke it to 383....or do what I'm doing and say the h*ll with it, and get a built 406!!!

Seriously, I've never run a "twin turbo" RX-7, but I'd bet if it runs half as good as it sounds, it would most likely smoke any 305 na - unless you run a forged bottom end and a 150 shot...may put you in mid 11's with traction and tuning- then maybe you'll give the twin turbo some competition.

That's the fastest 305 I've heard of.....or build a supercharged 350!!

It's gettin painted BEFORE you buy it??? Sounds weird.....

I remember back in the day......

My buddy back then had a RX-7 (Rotary). 8000 RPM's isn't a stretch for those engines at all....I think they took them off the market for awhile due to premature wear of the apex seals...(rings to a normal recip. engine).

With turbos - IMO - it'd be wicked!!! HP and TORQUE.....!!!!!

What's it run???.....assuming it's rotary.

as far as the paint goes, it was a custom job that was getting finished. his wife gave him a choice sell the 91 camaro or the 73 camaro. i dont think it is a hard choice.

the rx-7 runs low 13's with a stock block. with upgraded turbo's

ive never seen an RX 7 run 13's of any kind. my friends prolly ran high 15's with no turbo. i hate the rotary and think its a crappy engine for hot rodding. even the new RX 8 isnt as fast as the last trans ams or dare i say Rustangs

The mid 90's rx-7 was considered a supercar. they still go for 15k + twin turbo... they deffinetly are a fast car. with decent upgrades, they are a force...

i agree with the new rx-8 being slow. its not worth the money. the 20k neon srt 4 will outrun that car...

Remember - the rotary engine has a big design advantage - It doesn't have to convert a reciprocating motion to a rotary motion like a Chev 350 does....That allows two things:

More hp from the start to the drive train, no power loss at the "crank".
Balancing is much better allowing the rotary's to rev much higher than any recip. engine dare try.

Only limiting factor from making big power is thier displacement.

I'm not a big rotary fan either, but you can't deny that they have great possibilities!!

I believe a rotary CAN run 13's or better with a power adder, which is substituting for it's small displacement. Also not all Mazdas are rotary - the majority aren't....just my 2 cents!!

the twin turbo rx-7's are anythiong but slow. it the only car really worth driving made by them. the twin turbo set up allows for a quick spool and a high top end horsepower. the rx-7 car reach below 13's with mainly turbo work. the rx-7 and rx-8 are both dual rotor motors. i will be scared when they put out a 3 rotor motor that i am hearing about. i have seem acouple drag racing aplication tri rotor motors and they are insane.

i got my camaro. yep on friday i picked it up and drove it home.
like i discribed it before. it is a darker blue with a lighter blue flames up the nose. though i think i need to listen to my gut feeling. i think this guy was alittle shaddy. i have a switch that is in my ashtray that turns the fans on. he said he put it in there cause of in traffic it gets alittle hot. and i notice this sensor on the side of the block that has no wires coming off it. what gives? can anybody tell me what that sensor is. i dont have a book yet to look it up myself. i have to wait till payday. thanks in advance\

Which side of the block is the sensor?? On mine at least, the fan temp switch is on the drivers side below the header manifold.....

But you have a dual fan setup. As far as I know, your computer initially starts the fans, and the sensor in the side of the block for a 91 car is a back-up....try a search.....I've seen a lot of posts on this.

Mine's a single fan and works different than yours. Tha switch in the ashtray thing is bogus....a lot of people do it, but auto operation is what I prefer. I'd overheat all the time if I set mine up like that!! I'd forget to switch it on.....

Nothing that can't be fixed.....

Hope to see ya around!

Nice to hear from you again Blue! ..... I was beginning to think you left the state or something!

Sure - give me a ring! Gotta work all weekend though...

My car is down right now - my locking bolt is busted in half and I can't get my pinion pin out.....may be time for a rear change.

the sensor is on the driver side. i was really concerned when i saw the temp gauge at 220 deg, but a guy told me that this is normal. he told me to check the specs but he believes that the fan dont turn till about 240 deg. well as far as the switch goes i will leave it in there and rework the the sensor. i am getting a book so after i see the wiring digram i will be able to fix it. but so far i love the car. cant wait till i get a 350 to put in it.

maybe you guys can help me out with this. what are the ups and downs of having a 305 or a 350. i know the 350 has more horses but is there downfalls.

confused is the 1998 the year you retired. in 1998 i was off the coast of pakistan. i am on my last year of this tour. and this is my final tour. im done. things are changing. too much in a way im not comfortable. i have been a cop at great lakes since july 2001 and honestly the kids coming in are unbelievable.

also i got a vibration at 1250 to alittle over 1500 rpms. in all gears. any idea's. thanks

Bryce -

No downfalls to a 350 whatsoever. You just have 45 more cubes! "There's no replacement for displacement" - it's a true statement.

Not to mention, if you want to upgrade a 350, 383 stroker kits are reasonably priced....

That's why I'm having a 406 built right now....Although I kinda hate pulling the L69 I have - cause it only has maybe 10,000 miles on it since the rebuild and runs great!! But I want to go faster......... It's my toy, not my daily driver. If it was, I'd keep it like it is and be happy.

And yes ....retired in Dec. '98 from NTC GLKS as a GSMC (sw)....I was the GS "A" school course supervisor in Bldg 238 right before I retired on B. Clinton's TERA program...17 years and a retirement check. Couldn't pass it up!

I know what you mean about the kids coming in now....boot camp's a joke, and they don't learn respect!! I did 6 years of my career in Great Lakes...I feel your pain!

So far as the vib problem....try to isolate it to engine OR drive train.

In other words, RPM related or speed related. As you know, I narrowed my vib problem down to the rear in mine...(speed related)

...NEWBIE!!!!!!! Hey fellas, whats goin' on? As you may notice, I don't post much, I mostly just paruse the classifieds daily. I came over here to check out an 86 GN for trade, and saw this post. I'm in Pewaukee (podunk town about mid-way between Madison and Milwaukee) and own 2 thirdgens...not too bad for a 19 y/o, I guess My first one is a Polo Green met. 92 RS 305 5-speed with t-tops, which I bought just after my 17th b-day, and the other is a red 88 GTA (I think) hard top, which I picked up this past summer. I think it would be pretty sweet to get some kinda club going, and I'd probably be willing to travel the short distance to Kenosha if it were started. Well, I've probably rambled out enough pointless drivel for now, but if anybody wants to know more, I can almost always ramble about my babies So yeah, I guess thats it for now...later guys

Jeremy welcome to the boards!

I would also be interested in a local thirdgen type of club. Next spring I want to put together an all thirdgen show in the Milwaukee area.

Just checking in......

Well, I'm up to my freakin eyeballs on this 406 I'm having built!!

I have no idea how much HP and TQ I'll end up with....I'm hoping for at LEAST 400 at the rear wheels. Of course I thought I'd get out of this for around 4K, but it turns out it'll be even more.

I'm used to building my own engines, but with the prices I'm getting from this shop - I couldn't find a reason for building it myself this time....I guess I'm still in "sticker shock"!!

Bear in mind that I'm buying the shortblock itself from him, and all other parts required for him to break-in and dyno it also - basically a complete engine!! It'll have the following:

-406 2 bolt with Scat 9000 crank, Scat Rods, KB147 Pistons (all internally balanced to bolt up to my T-5)
-Dart Iron Eagle 72cc 200 Runner Straight Plug heads - Ported
-INTAKE – 52026 Prof. Products (like RPM Air Gap) -Port matched
-OIL PAN CP60LT (7 Qt. w/windage tray)
-Comp XE Cam 12-246-3 (model 274)
-ROCKERS = Comp cams roller tip 1.6 ratio
-CARB 750 Speed Demon

And there is much more stuff like water pump, oil pump, bolts etc....all the things you don't really think about but adds more $$$$....

On a good note, he informed me that Scat sent the wrong crankshaft - it should have been a 9000 series, but they sent a 4130 crank instead!! For the same price as the 9000 !!!!
The diff in price between the two is $199 compared to over $300!!

And to top it off, I've never really asked anyone what they think the HP and TQ would possibly be for this combo.

What do you guys think????

Welcome to the board Black Ice.
Confuzed1 I think your engine should hit your 400 mark once they got it tuned in. I'm not the greatest with engines yet but I'm learnin.

Thanks TheNutzZ28.

But in order to get 400 at the wheels, I need to see around 430-440 HP on the engine dyno since it's measuring flywheel HP......

Oh...I've built 6 engines so far, and I'm still learning too.

This is the first one I've put in someone else's hands though.

Engine is being built still. I told him I didn't need it until end of Feb. or first part of March anyway.

That gives me time to install SFC's, clean up the engine bay, get the wiring ready to run w/o computer, etc...

Of course the rear end will still give me problems. Still keeping my eyes open for a 91-92 10 bolt posi w/disc brakes. I think.....I can put my 3.73 gears in it if I change to the newer carrier but I'm still not 100% positive. But the open rear I have in it now should hold up till I find one. - Hopefully.

My Z28 has been in the garage the past couple weeks. It's seen more than it's share of salt in it's previous life....

Aliright any way i went out the other day to start my car and it was having trouble idling so i opened the hood and checked to make sure i had antifreeze and i did so i looked every thing over and it seemed fine so i figured it was just cause i havent run it in a couple of days so i start it again and it still is running rough and overheating like crazy so i open the hoodagain and get ready to adjust the timing and i notice that there is green fluid spewing out the side of my motor under my head some were so i just figure it is prob a freeze plug or somthing so i turn the car off. The next day i went and got my new starter and while i was putting it on I noticed that there is a crack almost a foot long in the side of my block! so I guess thats it! the motor finally went! but why did it wait untill i change the water pump and everything? No motor sucks!

Again, that sucks.

I seen it happened to a friend's truck before. I felt bad because it froze in my garage. We had just put the engine back together......he stuck a sh*t load of mods on it too - (intake, headers, Holley 750, cam etc....

We were gonna finish up the repairs and test it out the next day. Well - it got real cold that night, and I didn't know he had no antifreeze in it whatsoever.......same deal - foot long crack down the driver's side of the block.

I'll give ya a call. Been working alot lately.

Hey Black Ice guy, I may be getting a free 84 Subaran sometime. One of my old friends who is up in Appleton needs to get rid of it. Good 350 carb motor and a 700R4 transmission that is almost dead. Go figure for me, still haven't got the one in my truck fixed yet. Later.

Yea thats sweet except for the tranny part. Like I said you can use my tranny if you need to. Im still looking for a good motor for my car so my car may not get driven for a long time my girl talked me into puttting the car into hibernation for a year or so untill i can get a motor tranny rearend brakes and paint for it so that when it gets back on the road rhe car will look good and be dependable enuf to do stuff like the power tour and even just daily driving o-well I guess that means I will have to find another thirdgen to drive this summer. I miss the Iroc!

That's cool, some day I'll fix my shift stick, Black Ice knows about that one. I hope the tax man is nice and giving this year, all of the return will go for the engine rebuild and other mods in theory.
