I made motel reservations for Ames IA and Rochester MN. I'm driving from Janesville WI to IA then to MN then back to Madison.

Re: Hot rod power tour anyone?
I have done four of them as a Long Hauler and loved it. This year will be the first year I will go only a part of the way. Look to spend about three grand on lodging, food, gas, and any mechanical failure you might have. It is a great time and if you go, you will meet a ton of great people. I did it two years in my Firebird and all I gotta say is it is rough on a car. You really trash the car in a week driving cross country. Get ready for bug juice, tar, rain, dust, and the sun beating down on your car all day. Wax before you go and get a tent with some lawnchairs. Bring some tools a jack and manuals for your car. Coolers are nice too. Oh yeah, Firechickens and Camaros dont have cupholders (other than the circular impression on the windshield washer bottle that just so happens to fit a can of pop perfectly...hmmm) so bottled soda and water is a must or you will have a mess trying to balance a can on the console.
Try it if you have never done the Power Tour before, you will love it.

I guess I'll have to stop by with my '71 Trans Am for the show at the Alliant Energy Center. I hope this isn't the same time as the Don Miller All-Pontiac show, otherwise I'm going to have a lot going on that weekend.
I hear the Good Guys show is coming back to Madison again this year too.

I'm gonna try and get my car together to do the long haul. Good to hear a realistic est on the cost.

How much does it cost to run in this. What day does it start/end?

Re: Hot rod power tour anyone?
Okay, cost is kinda hard to judge for this because it all depends on your spending habits. Registration is something like $60-70, I can't remember 'cause I registered my car a couple months ago.
Then you have to factor in gas (at these prices.... could get crazy), hotel stay, food, souveniers, and possible vehicle repairs on such a long trip. With the food, you can count on a meal at most of the stops for those that are registered long haulers.
One plus is you seriously get TONS of free stuff from all the vendors. It's pretty cool. I still have a bag of stuff I haven't even gone through yet from last year. Expect to get several tshirts, samples of all kinds of car stuff (and some full size freebies), and like way too much other stuff to name. They have drawings galore everyday. I won a real nice jacket from Cherry Bomb, and the guys were so cool they ended up giving me two 'cause I'm a girl and they hadn't given away a prize to a girl yet. BTW, any girls out there thinking about going.... It's a blast! The vendors are so excited to see women interested in muscle cars and stuff, it's great. And kids get all kinds of cool stuff and special treatment too.
Everyone I met on the Power Tour was so nice and helpful. It's a great environment! I highly recommend going. This will be my second year and I'm way more excited than I was last year now that I know how fun it is.
Start date is: June 7th in Little Rock, AR
End date is: June 13th in Madison, WI (June 14th for long haulers to get the picture taken that ends up in Hot Rod magazine, and to get your long hauler gift)
Check out this website, this guy does a great job of getting the info organized in one spot: http://www.mytrain.com/hrpt2008.html
Any more questions let me know and I'll try to answer if I can. Would love to encourage more people to go.

Re: Hot rod power tour anyone?
My suggestions for doing PT is make sure your car is capable of making the trip. I know Hot Rod does a great job promoting the fact that guys pull all nghters just to make it and everything goes great, but it doesn't always work that way. 3 years ago I busted my butt for PT and got the car with the new engine running the week before. Ended up having tons of problems, spent alot of time on the side of the road, and basically had the worst car experience of my life. Had the car ran great, I think the PT would be alot more fun. So just a little warning. Bring an extra belt, some coolant and water, fuses, etc. Be prepared. If you are iffy, take a different car.
Re: Hot rod power tour anyone?
I hear you about breakdowns, on the 05 tour my car only made it to springfeild IL, that is when the battery cable wore through the insulation and started shorting out on the oil pan, it even melted a hole in it!!! Luckly the hole was high and I was able to make it back to Des Moines. I also lost the lock up function on my converter on the way back.

05 was my year of horror as well. Half way to springfield thru a belt and then battled overheating problems. Which really sucked cause it was ridiculously hot. Made it to Indy, then had to cut it short and go to a friends house in Cincy where I could replace a waterpump and get the car back home.

Re: Hot rod power tour anyone?
A friend of mine and I are going on the tour. We will start in Lincoln and then make the trip to ames. He lives down around Des Moines, IA and I live in Ames so it works out great. Looking at the directions in Ames, we drive right past my house. Kind of curious to know from others that have done the tours, when going through a town that you stop in, like Ames, do the police or anyone block off the lights when going through town so you dont get stoped by the stop lights or do you just have to hit the lights when going through? It would be nice if they did just like a long parade going through town to the stop. Can't wait for the tour.

Thursday the 12th on the trip from Ames to Rochester, there will be a stop at Cedar Falls Raceway. It was also a stop on the Hot Rod 2007 Dragweek tour, and was on one of the first episodes of "Pinks". Will look for you guys there.
Re: Hot rod power tour anyone?
I went on the 2005 power tour and no the police did not stop traffic for the power tour. The cars get so spread out it would be almost impossible to wait for all of the cars.

Re: Hot rod power tour anyone?
I'm in Lincoln. The bird isn't in any running condition though. But if anyone has internet access and will be out around 10-11pm or later, let me know.
I'm hoping to get off work around 10pm tonight. Just PM me your number by then.
Also, I've got a toolbox I can throw in the trunk if anyone needs a hand for repairs.

Re: Hot rod power tour anyone?
I see the route from Ames to Rochester has changed. Severe flooding in Cedar Falls/Waterloo Iowa (14 foot over flood stage, you should see it). Won't see you at Cedar Falls Raceway. But the tour is going by Clear Lake. Maybe they will stop at "The Surf" ballroom. The last appearance of Buddy Holly before he died in a plane crash.

I saw a few 3rd gens out cruising Tuesday night. I didn't get out until about 10 though, so it was pretty much dead by then.

I will be up in madison but I won't be able to go until later in the day
Re: Hot rod power tour anyone?
I didn't stop by the power tour in lincoln until about 5pm. (My V8 car wasn't there, its on jackstands). Anyways, I guess I just missed the knight rider cars. I did talk to the owner of a burnt orange (or about that color) firebird. He had a RA1 hood and 4th gen aftermarket style spoiler along with a lot of other mods. Also saw a black 87-90 gta, a violet 91-92 formula, a white 85-90 formula and that was it for firebirds. For camaros, GM had a LS1 swapped yellow camaro. Also saw about 10 other thirdgen camaros. I did get there late though so half of the cars might have cleared out of there.
Lesson learned: Take at least a day off for power tour even if you aren't participating. There is just too much going on.
