Buying my first camaro... some questions.
Hey guys. I'm looking at a '91 RS with a 305, manual transmission, T-tops. The car has about 145,000 miles on it, but about 60K were put on in Texas. I talked the guy down to about $2100, but I haven't committed to buy it yet.
Since I'm still in college, I'm not going to use the car except during summer so I can get to work. I'll worry about my quarter-mile times once I've got some extra money to put into it. But I wouldn't mind doing some minor work on it. Here are a couple questions for you guys...
1. The engine works fine and drives great, but at 145K, how much time does it have left?
2. Does anybody know what kind of performance gains (hp, 1/4 mile, etc.) are gained by doing the mods in the Ultimate TBI articles?
3. Are there any camaro or TBI-specific problem points to look for before I decide to buy?
4. I didn't check the RPO codes on the car, but I did find what looks like a remote for the security system. It's a boxy rectangular thing with a single button and a red light. Is this from a stock or an aftermarket one?
Thanks

I know where you can get a better deal. Theres a 91 RS near me for sale at a small dealer. I know the previous owner and it was well kept. It has the 305 TBI , auto, teal green in mint shape. Has 65,000 miles on it. I just put new tires on american racing rims and front brakes before he traded it in. Its a real cherry. $4500 no ttops tho.

Do not get the RS but a Z28 or an IROC-Z 28! You will thank yourself. I have 2 RS: 89 and 90 RS with both/TBI 305 V8. The 89RS was purchased for college since I commuted and at the time did not know the difference between the Z28. I spent a lot on mods trying to keep up with a 350TPI and Mustangs and always wished for an IROC or Z28 350 instead. All RS camaro have non-posi-traction or peg leg except the Police Package B4C. Suspension sux on the RS! Now that college is done with I added a 1989 GTA w/L98 350 to the list and had it for $2500 and the difference is between night and day to the RS. The 1990 RS I got for free in exchange for Photoshop and web design work. It was wrecked and needed a lot of work done but now it runs well.
Unless you really want a Camaro RS then I respect your decision!

No RS camaro's have positraction huh? Funny thing because this is happened when I hammered the gas pedal on DRY pavement.

This was taken with the stock rear end 2.73. Also no camaro has true positraction if you want to get technical. They come with limited slip if it wasnt an open rear end.

in response to the original poster, go ahead and get it. Thats a good price if its in decent shape. Miles dont mean anything as long as it was taken care of (oil changes, regular maintenance) I would do a compression check if you are concerned with the motor.

I woul do a serious rust check before I bought the car to see if it was hit or if it all bondo. A friend of mine did that and saw the car was a mess. My other buddy has one with similar miles on it and it runs like no other. I would say to go for it an buy it. To rebuild these engines really doesn't cost all that much. My frineds and I all are in college and now your feeling about the money thing. We have had no problems and I say buy it.
