Central Iowa? All of Iowa?

Hello all. I just thought I would post to see how many of you fellow f-body owners are from around where I live. I live just outside of Des Moines and am currently in the process of building and dropping in my 350 that I have spent the last half year or so preparing to build. I am hoping to make about 400HP. I have a 5 speed that will be backing this engine. I also have added an effects kit and added a suspension system.

Just interested in what kind of upgrades you have all performed, or just about what you all like to do and if any of you race.

Also, since I am here, any one here have stock rims(preferrably the Iroc rims) they are trying to sell? If so do you have pics and I need to know rim size, 16,17,18.

Well, that is all for now.

Hello. I'm from Ankeny just north of Des Moines and just bought some rims from an add that was posted. Right now I'm in the process of polishing them so if you know of anyone in town who has done this let me know. I think they are about there but just not sure. Right now I have a 400sb that I am getting ready to tear into after Christmas but I am looking for a T-56 to back it up. Anyone know where I could get one for a reasonable ($1000-$1300) price? Should be packing about 450hp and maybe a little NOS to back it up. Later...

I am in the Mid Iowa Camaro club. I am also in the Mid Iowa F-body. I currently don't have my iroc running, but she is still on her way. I live in Johnston, which is about 5 -10 mins north of Downtown Des Moines. I am always looking for some other clean 3rd gens around here, but you hardly find them.

Thanks screamer, I may need some parts for my 400sb like a flywheel and distributor. What would they cost at the dealership?

I have talked to the guy who manages Jocko's here in town several times but I can't remember his name. He has several third gens and keeps buying more. He told me he got a 1986 Iroc with 2 TPI engines for $750. Plus he has a black Trans Am that he just put a 350 in using a modified LT1 intake. Does anyone know how much work is involved with the LT1 intake mod? I could probably do a search and someone will have a post so guess I will go do that. Hey, if we did want to get together, when would we do it? 4th of July time? We could have a cruise nite and hit the local Drive Ins like Porkys or others and then cruise the lake. Might be fun!

Later.

Not a problem guys, just tell me the application the parts are for, and i'll get ya a quote at my price. During the Spring / summer / fall you guys will prolly see my black 94 Z28 at car shows and porky's at least every other saturday night. Look for my rear liscence plate "Z28," or ask anyone in the Mid Iowa Camaro Club My dad and I are both officers in the club and know everyone in the club.

still nobody from W'loo area, ttt. I'll say howdy to Maverick351, closest so far. I'd run out of gas before I made it to Grundy w/ my beast. As soon as spring rolls around, you'll have to come up to CFR and make a few passes. I dominated the night racing scene last year up there, and unless they change the rules I plan on taking the kids money again this year. Hell, it'd be nice to have another driver on Sat. and Sun. at the real races. Why do you use a ford username?

Hey screamer, got any pics to post of your wheels? I am trying to finish my IROC wheels up also. Ended up having to paint them too which is a pain trying to strip them by hand using something called TAl Strip. Messy, smelly, crappy! But the wheels are looking good. Only thing I wonder is about those tiny little scratches that don't seem to come out. Do you have that problem???

What can I say...hmmm, over confident maybe. I used that stratigy last season against my opponets and faired pretty well. I'd just love to have more people to race at the track, last season was my first year actually running and I got addicted, maybe in a couple years it won't be "new and exciting"
All I know is that the kids FEARED the blue bumper bandit.
Last season it ran better than it looked, now this season it gonna look better than it'll run.
I'll be lookin forward to it, if anyone wants a schedule for CFR as soon as I get it I'll post it-probably do it anyway and try to pull some of you boys up here, hate for ya to drive all this way so I can send ya packin, but that's the way it goes when some one races the Bandit!

IHI forgot to mention that i was looking at your track time 13.58 i think it said anyway with what you have in your tag for a powerplant you shoudl be doing better than that in the 1/4 i had a mild cammed stock 350 in my car last year with the origonal 3.43 one wheel wonder and ran a lil better than that at 13.23 just thought i would add that you might want to see if you are missing something you should be able to pull some more out of it

That damn car of mine was literally a rolling experiment last season. Tried 3 carbs, 2 intakes, 3 trannies, 3 convertors, 3 different carb spacers, street tires, slicks, dino oil/syntheitc. Look at the compression on my lil' road *****. Stock 305's came out with more compression than that. Once I get the car back, I want to move stuff around for weight transfer, try to lighten it up more yet since we put the cage in and plan on having a Ford 9" hangin underneath. Those times w/ the mods listed were the best I got out of it all season, need steeper gear for sure as I'm only crossing the traps @4400rpm. Any street car in the 13's is respectable, I won't be happy until at least 12's, BUT the car is deadly consistent. And on Sat. and Sun. I could run 18's as long as I bring home the green, jack, coin, bling-bling, benjamin's, bacon, what ever else kids are calling money these days.
Mav, we need you up there on race day. TT is alright but race day is totally different when participating. I coul'nt stand to watch it if I was'nt racing-too boring, no drama.
I get the Bandit all done, and the weather gets nice, I'll get a hold of ya and cruise out to GC once, stop by Casey's there and see if there's any women I can pick up.
How bout these cold *** temps the past few days?

That's the nice thing about small towns...ahhhh, the women. Especially when ya roll in from outta town and just happen to know 1 person from where they're from, then your a shoe in
Just got back from taking my daughter to see her great grand parents, the guy painting my car lives right across the road, so I popped in for a few more "before" pics" before it gets shot this weekend. Check'em out.

He's done more show cars than I can count, I took a pic of the one he has on his door since it was his buddies and they had pics from every stage, like what I've been doing, so it'll give ya an idea of what this guy can do. The guy that owns the Camero bought er new, took it straight to Keith's shop and gutted it, down to nothing like mine, then this is the finished result. This guys got crazy skills, he's just kinda goofy-think the fumes he's been breathin his whole life are partly accountable, I still have to redo his garage door and reroof it since he did some extra stuff for me, but still nothing out of pocket, I get to write it all off. Not to bad a deal IMO.

28 at the present, man that 3-0 is really creepin up fast, ever since we had our daughter 1 1/2 ago, time just slips away something terrible now. I can't wait till she's old enough to wear ear plugs/muffs so we can start going to the races as a family, everybody that raced in my class had their whole family tree out there backing them, and then there was me Oh well, once we got to know everybody they were all like a 2nd family anyway, we all still talk via internet about every day with progress on our cars and the regular ole shuck and jive.
The guy that owns the 94 Camero in that pic currently has it for sale, I don't know the price, but I'd imagine pretty spendy, he wants to off that and get into the street rod scene. Every vehicle that guy owns is killer, don't know what he does for a living, but I guess when your passinate about something you find ways to get it goin.
I just got home from droppin off yet another supply of 12oz.er's for the guy and his helper and they gonna mask it tomorrow, then shoot it Sat.. I got him 5 other cars to do after mine, so once mines out, I'm gonna talk to him about lowering his prices somewhat on mine, so I don't spend the summer doing stuff to his place that he thinks is still part of the bill. Hell, once I'm done with a job or talk to customers, I tell them if they refer me and I get the job-it has to be a good paying one, not a $200 repair-it's an automatic $100 cash back to them just for helping spread the word about my company. Did'nt do too bad last year, and it was all word of mouth. This year I was able to get the Home Depot millwork account for the Waterloo and the new Cedar Rapids store, so hopefully I'll be able to expand this year. That's always a good thing, last year I bought out my partner, so it's all me-oh, I guess it basically was last year also, hence the buy out

I'm still debating about getting into new homes or not. I've talked with a few of the bigger contractors and they all said the best way to make quick money is buy the cheap houses, throw a quick paint job on the interior, and fix the piddily stuff, just so it looks good inside and out, then dump it. So that's another avenue I want to look at this year, I want income coming in weather I'm working or not. The hardest of businesss in finding people that know what's going on, are willing to work, and are responsible. I'm lookin trying the "temp" agencies out for some of my bigger jobs this year, thenI can screen without the headaches of hiring.

Anyway, my business is in the yellow pages of the McCloud yellow book, QwestDex wants WAAAAY too much to advertise with them, plus I can count on 1 hand how much buiness I got from the yellow pages last year.

Newbie checking in here. Just going to pick the T.A. up tonight in Nebraska. Got her for $2,500 and very well optioned. Looking forward to replacing the peanut cam and some other cheap mods, as well as repainting her in the factory blend of colors. Not looking to break the bank modding it though as I'm saving money for either the '05 Mustang or if GM brings back the pony car somewhere down the line, haven't decided yet.... Although the T56 swap sure would be nice for this bird, as well as a stroker 420 small block swap...

Hopefully your is in better shape than mine was. My body looked every bit as straight as your, that's why I got it. Was'nt until they started sanding/spot blasting they found the damn thing was rotting from the inside out, thanks to the good ole years of mid-west salt we have.

The guy I got it from is a mechanic in Fremont, NE, so we took it into the shop and put it on the lift. It was -15 degree windchill outside and when he saw my used car checklist at two pages long, he said "Uh, let's take it in here where it's warm..."

I went over that car with a fine tooth comb. She's pretty straight other than one 4" crease on the passenger's door, but it'll fix up nice. Here's some more pics...

The exterior owwwwwie

Side profile... (The one I photoshopped my sig file from)

Engine bay...

Hatch area, complete with T-top covers...

Peeling hood (darn EPA mandated water based paints )

Seat needs recovered or repaired...

Dash and door panels look brand new, even the notoriously broken map pockets are still very, very good!!!

Stereo installation and seat repair come first yet this winter. As soon as we get some "paint drying temps" she'll look a lot better than she does now. Man, it's been a long while since I painted a car... Anybody got a P.O.S. I can practice on???

I am in Ames, and just recently moved here in August. Havent really done anything to my car yet except chage out the nose on my 89 Firebird Formula. Going to be getting a 4th gen ram air hood and spoiler this spring. Hopefully getting it repainted then as well but will see how the money situation is. Right now I am looking for suspension parts, what kind of new shocks and struts to get, and other engine mods to increase HP. I think an Iowa 3rd Gen Organization would be great and especially to have some sort of 3rd Gen show here in Iowa. Just my thoughts though.

Is there an Iowa F-body club, third gen or otherwise? I know the Mustang club of Central Iowa is very, very active with "meet and greets" throughout the year, several autocross races, car shows, and BBQ's just for fun. We're going to be joining that club with my fiancee's '00 Mustang GT 'vert sometime this spring and to include something similar for the T.A. would be great... Heck, we've got enough members it sounds like just on this thread of posts alone!

At the very least, I'll organize mod meets and BBQ's at my place this summer if you guys would be interested...

By the way, any of you guys go to the autocross/go-cart track in Marshalltown? Or maybe MAM in Western Iowa? Those two are my favorite to run on with the pony club...

Hey Screamer27,
where do we contact the Mid Iowa Camaro club? My buddy has been asked to maybe design the web site, but I have no idea of who to contact about joining. Do you go to Porky's even in the winter?

It has been awhile since I visited this post...at least half of a year!

Oh, I should update my original post:
I have built and installed the 355. Edelbrock intake, cam, carb,gm 2.02 heads,700R4 tranny...which is being replaced this year with a tranny from probuilt. It is getting painted this spring as well, just finished most of the body work including the finishing touches on the body kit.

JT...your notchback wouldn't happen to be red would it? If it is I think I may have talked to you about it up in Ankeny a little while back. If not, they look cool as hell and I would like to see it.

restoIROC,
would you happen to have those rims still? I should have checked back sooner. I had forgotten about this post and I haven't visited this site in quite awhile either. Let me know. I am interested if you have them.

Very nice shade of red you chose there. Is that a factory or custom mix color?

The floresent lighting in the shop does'nt tell how red this thing actually is. It's PPG Torch Red, same color they used on the 70 Chevelles. I had to keep the red theme going in my family, my uncle has a RED- 88 vette, 5K on it, 68 camero he just did a ground up on, 94 full size blazer, 96 S-10, 89 K-1500, my grandfather has a red 26 Ford Model T he just finished about 3 years ago, so I had to stick with red, different shade of red, but red. We're also building a 92 S-10 to race in the Super-Pro no box class this season and that thing is way out there, think it was PPG Carnation Yellow?, Sticks out like a sore thumb, tryin to think of a nickname for that truck and the best we have so far is Killer Bee, debating to have black SS stripes painted down the middle. Tryin to talk my uncle into buyin a 40' enclosed so we can haul all 3 cars to the track at once and enter more classes, he just laughed at me though. I'll keep workin on him.

Ohhhhhhhhh puuuuuuuurdy! I had an '82 GS750E Suzuki that I painted in the same torch red color. Beautiful color for Zaino to make shine...

The yellow truck... Uh... I hate to admit this, but I had an '83 S-10 Blazer done in Canary Yellow. We called it "da 'nanner", as in the slang for bananna.

My uncle has always been into cars, and last year when I started drag racing, he was out there about every other race, when his work schedule would allow. He kept hem hawin around about what kind of car to build and we told him the smallest, lightest vehicle you can find, so he went out an bought a 96 S-10 in full working order, just to tear into and gut it. Just so happened a kid from Cedar Rapids was moving to Florida to go to marine school, he had a 92 S-10 that already had the S&W pro street back half on (ladder bar set-up), 4 wheel disc, all stainless steel brake lines, 35 spline Strange axles (no center section though), manual steering box, 10 point cage installed, MSD 6AL ignition, big tube small block chevy headers, cab already redone and painted, had a rust free box that needs painted to match though, full interior (laying there in peices) ALL brand new front end parts, for the low price of $2200, he wanted $3800, but we nit picked to see how far he'd go down. I should have bought it, but that's just what the wife would've loved to have seen another project! Getting a 383 built by Speares, BTE Powerglide w 1.82 first gear and trans brake, have to wait until they dyno the motor before ordering the convertor from BTE also, already have the nodular center section w/ Richmond 4.33 and Detroit locker. We're hopin it runs mid to low 10's, once you hit 9's there are waay to many other rules and safety equipment to deal with and buy. Best of all, I get to run it. He just wants it for the same reason he has so many other vehicles, just to say he has it. Fine by me, I don't think I'll be running quick enough at the begining of the season to enter into Super Pro with my car, but the S-10 is getting set-up strictly for that class-might even sneak a delay box in there for the big buck shoot outs. $5K to win the 2 day event.
