Mass Emissions Testing

Hey All,

Have a question about emmisions testing here in MA. I just recently bought a 82 Z-28 and I'm in the process of restoring it. I plan on swapping out the 305 to a 350 and would like to remove the emmisions stuff. According to MA emmisions laws, the car is exempt from emissions testing.

The car has a cross-fire injection system on it now,but when I do the swap I plan on putting on either a TPI or MPFI system on. Unless I go with a stock TPI,with a stock Ecm I'll have to get rid of the emissions stuff, unless there is a Ecm that is available that can control an aftermarket fuel system and the stock emissions!

So my question is! Am I asking for trouble by taking off the emissions or should the car pass regardless?

Where in Mass. are you?

Since the car is exempt from emissions testing, you should be okay in removing the emissions parts. I removed the emissions parts from my '77 GP and passed year after year with no problem. Now, that being said, I believe that the law states that you cannot remove or render inoperable any factory emissions equipment. If you happen to get an **** inspection station guy who wants to pop the hood and look around, I guess it is theoretically possible that you could be failed visually i.e. the stock emissions components are not present. I don't think many inspection guys are like that, but it is theoretically possible.

Mass Emissions Testing

Hey Bull,

Thanks for replying! I went back to the Mass emissions site and checked out the laws in regards to tampering with the emissions and it is illegal to take off any emissions control equipment. What I don't get, is if the car is exempt from emissions testing why does it matter if the emissions equipment is there or not Doesn't make any sense! From the research that I've been doing, alot of the after market fuel systems that are available today can be tuned to run cleaner than the original equipment even without the emissions equipment. Btw I live in Quincy.
