Re: CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS CRAP?????

On paper it doesn't sound like a bad idea, although the part about it being illegal to wash your car is kinda bogus, they make car soaps without phosphorous for a reason.

Capitalistic ideas usually don't, on paper, but how many are actually implemented the proper way though. When councils contemplate an idea, it is usually to further their own agenda ($$$$). As a homeowner, I pay for my water, and should be able to wash my damn car if I so choose to. When it gets right down to it though, it really has nothing at all to do with washing your car per se, it's about your rights being slowly but surely taken from you....

Re: CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS CRAP?????

Thought I'd be a bit of a smartass and say wash the car on your lawn or in the garage. It's not the driveway or street

But all joking aside, it's clearly a money grab. Environment protection? Common. How many people wash their cars really? I only see maybe 5-10 people washing their cars in any given month or two.

Since calamitascamaro covered the soap part of the issue - If they are worried about oil running off of the driveway then there should be a law saying every house must have a garage to park in at all times so there is no oil on the driveway.

Funny how his last name is Harris. There was a Mike Harris in the mid 90's here in Ontario that made a lot of folk angry - especially in the public sector. Wonder if they are related.

Re: CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS CRAP?????

A town makes it illegal to wash your car at home, then opens a car wash.....Conflict of interest.

I'd make it a point todrive to the next town, or privately owned car wash, to show the town that it won't be tolerated.

Besides...What justification does the town give, for making it illegal to wash your car at home?

Re: CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS CRAP?????

Probably some water runoff and how it'll make its way into a natural water shed, which will pollute it. Bet the car wash drains its filthy water into that same stream lol. I'd love for someone to tell me it was illegal to wash my car on my own property. Wow that would suck.

Edit: in the article it says exactly that, that the DEP is going to make it illegal under storm water runoff regulations.

Re: CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS CRAP?????

I dont care what they say, im still going to was my car in my driveway, im not driving 10 miles to a car wash for a hack job, or a self service one and get hassled for taking too long.

So who is supposed to enforce this anyway?

what about salting the roads? That has caused a lot of issues around me with unsafe levels of salt in well water.

what about the bears crapping in the stream, the deer peeing in my yard? gotta get rid of them too?

Didn't they try to do this before?

Re: CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS CRAP?????

I'm going to be honest - a police officer stops by while I am washing a car in my driveway and give me a ticket or whatever I will go bonkers. Considering that my driveway runs downhill into my backyard (100% grass) the EPA/DOT/ASPCA/WTF can eat my a$$.

Wash your car in your yard, sans soap! "But officer, I'm just rubbing the dirt off it. See? No soap!"

Or let them arrest you & file False Arrest charges...Set up a video camera, like inside your house, showing everything, start to arrest. They can't argue the charges, if there was nothing but pure water present.

Re: CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS CRAP?????

I guess nobody read further...Apparantly the 2009 prohibiton of no washing your vehicle is a myth. Several of the people that left comments below the article said that the author has it wrong and that there is no moritorium.

Re: CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS CRAP?????

^ What is written underneath is simple speculation by the ordinary Joe's like you and me. Some of it states....;

Minimun Standard-Tier A Municipalities must eliminate the unpermited discharge of equipment and vehicle washwater to the waters of the state from Municipal maintenance yard operations, And under compliance dates this must be done by Feb. 28, 2009. No where in the general permit does it state from private residences....

They could easily file for an extension in terms of the February 28th 2009 deadline, and as far the exclusion of private residences are concerned, because it is not included in the permit, exceptions, loopholes and amendments are always considered to justify a corporate scheme, just look at our swiss cheese of a Constitution....

Never the less. There is no impending legislation prohibiting the washing of private cars. Here's the link. http://www.state.nj.us/dep/dwq/bnpc_home.htm

The town I used to live in - Orwigsburg, PA does not allow you to wash your car at home. They built a (not-so-impressive) car wash for the public to use. It's really not that bad. You can still wax and detail your car at home.

That's irrelevant though Kevin, as I can point to the Bill of Rights' freedom of speech clause, while being heavily fined for publically denying the holocaust. The senate both creates and changes law, and the corporate elitists control the senate. This is just the way it is....

This is only because these companies elect to play ball with big brother, and pay them a pretty substantial percentage from their profits. If they decided not to, a new contaminant would be found in these waxes, while being banned the following week. It's all about money. Ahhh yes, the greed of corporate America, nobody depicts it better than Gordon Gecko's character from Wall Street, Click Here....

Re: CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS CRAP?????

that's bs I live in jersey and always wash my own cars. I hate the car wash, I've had my paint scratched with their dirty rags and have to worry about things like rims and body kits .etc.

I'll have to wash my car in my garage if that law becomes effective lol

Re: CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS CRAP?????

I just found out...I Colorado, it is already illegal to wash you car at home. But, nobody really enforces it nor does anybody obey it.

Now, I dunno that is a state law or city ordinance or what, but it does mean ya'll aren't the first ones to see it.

Re: CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS CRAP?????

I'm throwing down a challenge. I'd like to see a link to ANY state, county, town that actually has a no washing of cars ordinance/law. I've seen way too much Horse Apples on the internet. I've heard of ordinances that say you cannot let the hose run, that you have to be able to control the water flow from the business end of the hose, but no outright ban...

Quick search turned up this. #7. It has more to do with water conversatiob than NO home car-washing. But that does show.....Laws are out there.

Re: CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS CRAP?????

Well, they just proposed the SAME EXACT thing here in East Lyme, CT. People are PISSED!! Their apparently looking at a water shortage as well. I'd say f* off to anyone who wanted to TELL me I couldn't water my lawn or wash my car on MY property that I pay taxes for, I pay property tax on my vehicles EVERY year, renew my registration fees every year and I pay my water bill for. Now, if things were that bleak and the "asked" us as responsible citizen's I'd probably adhere. Its all in the way you "propose" something.

Re: CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS CRAP?????

Maybe you should read your town's web site. They're doing just that, asking that you be resonsible and ration yourself. They're not issuing a law, they're considering declaring an emergency due to lack of rain water and the fact they've had to shut down two of the town's wells. Read it here.

"If we continue to experience insufficient rainfall, a Water Supply Emergency may be declared and mandatory water conservation required. Mandatory water conservation measures include, but are not limited to:

· Prohibition of sprinkling, watering or irrigation of lawns.

· Prohibition of washing of motor vehicles, boats or trailers.

· Prohibition of cleaning of outdoor surfaces of buildings or structures, sidewalks, driveways and other surfaces.

We again thank you for your continued efforts and cooperation during this inconvenience. Please watch for further updates regarding the status of this water supply advisory on Channel 22 or visit the Town of East Lyme website."

Hey Kevin,

1) I don't live in East Lyme
2) I didnt' say they were issuing a law
3) Read the portion of my sentence asked" us as responsible citizen's I'd probably adhere. Its all in the way you "propose" something."

I realize they are asking people to be responsible citizens and like I said I'd adhere if I was asked. I understand temporary measures for water conservation. Half of South Eastern US is going through this. Atlanta is looking at the possibility of running out of water for 5+ million people, Florida is in a battle with states north of it due to ecology vs. human comsupmtion. The Carolina's (Charlotte, NC in particular) have had water bans for half a year now.

No probs...I hate the internet sometimes...you can't infer tone. I wasn't being a *****, just trying to point out a few things. I said "here" because CT isn't as big as CA...everything is less than 2 hours away, anywhere in the state
