some people shouldn't be allowed to work on cars
what kind of stupid things have you guys seen people do to third gens?
i'll start
theres this idiot that used to be in my BOCES class this school well in the middle of February he starts talking **** saying hes got the best car ever an 86 camaro with a 350 and t-tops and says he's gonna be bringing it in the the shop to work on it ok. so a week goes then one day a flat bed rolls up to the shop and drops off this beat up sad looking camaro thats got doors from two different cars and a rear quarter thats painted a different shade of blue. a couple of guys push this poor car in the shop and i take a look inside the only peice of the interior left is the drivers seat wires are hanging everywhere and the cars full of garbage. the idiot kid that owns the cars is still trying to say its a great car cuz its got a 350 and tops. well everybody in the shop shut him up quick not only was there no interior and a miss matched paint but when he put it on the lift the floor pans where completely rotted. the engine didn't run and the tranny was blown. not as good of a car as he thought. and heres when things got funny and my reason for think that some people shouldn't be allowed to work on cars. i was working on the next car over so i got to see the whole thing the kid started to try and take his tires off with a 20mm and the impact. now i know the lug nuts take a 19 and i probably should have told the kid but i thought it would be funnier to watch him strip his lug nuts. and surprisingly he managed to get 4 of them off the first tire. one got completely rounded off as expected. the kid then goes and grabs a chisel and a hammer and starts to try and cut the lug nut off. of that didn't work to well so he grabs the air hammer chisel and starts using that on his lug nuts now im laughing my *** of at this point and decide to go see what he was doing. he said the lug nut was on to tight and it stripped on him so the teacher told him to cut it off with the chisel. now remember i was in the next bay the whole time and he never spoke to the teacher once. i just laughed and walked away as he continued to destroy his rim with the chisel. about ten minutes later the teacher came over to see why the kids been using the air hammer for 15 minutes and the kid tried to tell the teacher the same thing he told me that the teacher told him to do it. the teacher laughed said its your car and walked away. the next day the kid did the same thing to his front tire as he did the previous day to his rear. he got 2 off stripped the 3d and finally i went over and gave the idiot a 19mm. the rest came off no problem. i then started to work on vehicles at the other end of the shop for the next couple of months. the kid was finally kicked out of the class (for obvious reasons) the day before spring break. so when we got back one of my friends got the fun task of get the camaro back together so the could put it on a flat bed and tow it back to the kids house. i moved back to the that end of the shop cuz there was a simple tie rod job and i wanted to see what the idiot did to the camaro. for some reason the kid punched the stud out of his car ( except the 2 he stripped and destroyed with the chisel) the he pulled his transmission and removed the fluid from his rear axle. we have installed new studs at the kids expense cuz we cant find the originals and we tried to cut the destroyed lug nuts out but there probably gonna stay there. now one more thing i noticed about this car is that if it was an 86 like he said the bumper was wrong its the 82-85 bumper but the bumper and front fender actually looked like they where original so i got curious and checked the vin and the eighth letter from the right is a c meaning it an 82. he didn't even know what year it was the car didn't have a title the kid said it was gonna be a race car.
what goes on in some peoples minds?

Judging by you knowing what he was doing was wrong...I'd say YOU shouldn't be allowed to.
Everybody has to start somewhere. At one point, you didn't know squat either & made your share of mistakes too.
Instead of providing some guidance & assistance, you let him break things.
Karma is a bitch man...It WILL come back to bite you in the ***. Hopefully that isn't when your doing 60mph down the highway & take somebody else out, when something on your car breaks.
What are you? 10?
Grow up.......

Grow up.......second i hated the kid and thought it would be funny to watch and laugh.
third i eventually did give him a 19 mm
and finaly yes i have made mistakes like a couple of weeks after watching the idiot strip his lug nuts. i almost broke my nose trying to pry the exhaust manifold off my bird from underneath. so karmas already got me.
one other thing i would like to point out is most people ask if they dont know how to do something.
also the same kid was always saying he knew it all about how to fix cars. said hes been working in his dads shop since he was 10. i have only been working on cars a couple of years not 8. and i know if the sockets loose on the bolt its not the rite size and will strip it.
i didn't post this just to bash the kid i posted this to see what other stupid things people have seen people do. this story just was one of the most resent and was about a third gen. i know i have seen a few people do some pretty stupid stuff to vehicles. its like my BOCES teacher always says "everyone thinks there a mechanic" which causes some crazy repair methods.

Re: some people shouldn't be allowed to work on cars
Sounds like a crappy teacher and poor leadership skills of the students. I spent 2 years (Junior/Senior) in Graphic Imaging helping everyone. In return I was able to pass on doing work, or assignments because I was helping teach the other kids how to do the assignment (Kind of like doing it without really doing it). I'm not a know it all about computers but I tried and it helped a lot, for both my friends and the teacher. I taught a bit in Photoshop, Illustrator, Powerpoint, and some in the Press (Mostly learning here for me). I even started the idea in my class to go direct to plate (Vellum paper, instead of making negatives, then positives for shirts and such). I did as much as I could to help everyone, as you should have done, as well as the teacher.
Now don't feel like I'm getting on you, because its just as bad for the kid with the Camaro not to ask for help on something obviously not going right. But some want help, most people don't, but I'm trying to say help all you can, ESPECIALLY because this was a 3rd Gen.
-Take care

Re: some people shouldn't be allowed to work on cars
one time i was swappin 350 in place of a 3.1 . had my buddy helpin. this was many yrs ago. i was doin some stuff inside the car. i didnt know he was workin on the gas lines to the engine . next thing ya know he's hellin and hollerin, runnin in circles around the car like he just smashed his hand or somethin. i get out and low and behold the engine comp. is on fire!!!!! ha ha ha sorry im laughin as im writtin this. anyway we tried puttin it out with extinguishers and nothin would work!!! we stood there for a min. not knowin what to do. i was ready to just watch it burn. but the flame stayed in one spot. he finally grabbed a bucket of water and it went out instantly. after all this i found out he left the bat. in and while he was workin on the lines he dropped the wrench on the battery. that started the gas on fire. wish i would have had a camera to see the look on his face again!. he burnt up all the wires goin to the lights. melted the new battery , burnt up the cruise con. melted the washer bottle and all the wires to that too. melted the plastic cover for the rad. (witch i still have on the car) and melted the upper rad. hose. other then that its all fixed now... but that s..t was funny. still laugh to this day

I HOPE YOU END UP IN A DEALER,WITH A BUNCH OF 15+ YEAR TECHS THAT KNOW WHATS WRONG WITH A CAR AS SOON AS YOU DRIVE IT IN,THEN WATCH YOU MIS-DIAGNOSE THE CAR AND LOOSE YOUR SHIRT ON THE JOB.THEN YOU'LL SEE HOW IT FEELS

Re: some people shouldn't be allowed to work on cars
Kind of reminds me of a couple of guys in my class a couple years ago. I won't go too far into it other than to say I had to fix the second one's mistakes on the 95 Z28 vert... The other guy quit a day into our second class.
But, I do know what you're talking about. Sometimes it's better to let an idiot make a mistake and at least ATTEMPT to learn from it than to take him/her by the hand and have them not learn anything because of it. Especially if they cop an attitude.
:edit: And, hey, if the guy wasn't smart enough to pick up a couple of sockets and attempt to make sure they fit the way they are supposed to, I'm glad he gets stuck with the expenses for his mistakes. And, yes, this guy never should have even come close to that car. Some guys think they know everything when it comes to this stuff, only to prove they don't know squat and don't really want to learn, only to keep making mistakes, screwing around and up, and potentially killing themselves and others.
