Best benchmark or places for figuring out car values

Still looking for a third gen and camaros seems to vary a lot in price. I haven't really written down and evaluated specific models and prices but it seems like they're going up in price based on a quick survey from just ebay. Was just wondering if others out there have been watching prices and noticing differences. Are the nada book values still on the mark for determining values or is it just an up and down thing?

Re: Best benchmark or places for figuring out car values

NADA values to me have always seemed higher than real world prices. having worked
at a couple of dealerships for the past 25 years, I found sales managers use wholesale
dealer auctions to determine values. But this only works for newer cars. In my area,
New Philadelphia, Ohio, I found prices for third gen Camaros to run up to $10k. From
what I saw last year when I was looking for one, was you should be able to find a
decent one between $5-$10k. Less than that and it was usually junk. I never use ebay, just craigslist and personal ads.

Saw a dealer listing, for an 88 irocz28 for $9,600. Has 28,000 miles and a clean car fax report. The car registration miles add up correctly so looks original. It's the ruby red but no ttops. I'm guessing no t tops lowers the value. I don't know. I'm more curious as to the condition and if its really a preserved low mileage car. Always hard to tell with pictures if the paint is mint and if rust is hidden somewhere .

I looked at a lot of cars before buying my 91Z28. Prices do vary a lot, I agree with rickwise in that NADA will get you in the ballpark but those prices are usually high compared to real world. The best way to know the value of a car is to have looked at several other similar cars. When you find a good deal you will know it based upon what you have seen in comparison.

Thanks all for the wisdom. I have to do some homework. I'm in no hurry to buy so I'll just keep scanning ads.

A current auction report will give you current wholesale prices.
But these 3rd gens are so old they will be far and few sold or reported.

Any older car is only worth what someone will pay....................
