Moving to Cali

I live in Indiana and thinking about moving to Cali. But have a few question, as of now, I have now emission on my car, car is there but hollowed out. no smog pump, no air on headers, no way for an EGR valve, LT1 heads and intake. How strict is the emission laws there, we have none here.

Greetings from Cali!

Do a quick search, there are many threads on the California "SMOG ****'s".

Basically an "enhanced" SMOG test with visual and a lo/hi speed chassis dyno.

Not fun.

With no equipment underhood you will fail.

That does sound like one hot combo you have there, I am actually considering the same. How's it do in the 1/4? Custom Chip?

Aren't you allowed so much time before you have to have your car checked for smog after moving to CA? I thought it was something like 2 years...

Maybe you have a certain time to SMOG it, but its inevitable as far as I understand.

I realize it's inevitable. It's like death and taxes. In CA you can add smog testing to that list. But at least it would buy him time to set the car up for it and not have to worry about doing it before he left IN. That was the point to my question. Thanks for the clarification...

You're probably right, and I was agreeing with you

I just don't know if he does have time / how long it is.

As "smog-a-phobic" as I am right now, I am thinking Arnold is going to have us all hooked onto a 15MPH treadmill and make sure I'm not a "gross polluter".

Once you set up residence,po box, rental agreement, utility bill I think you have 10 or 14 days to notify dmv.You will get a temporary registration card for 30 days and you have to smog it within that time,if it fails you get another 60 days, and I think they will give you one more after that. When you get here I would just get a used running motor, from a wrecking yard or something with all the smog and injection, swap the engines out, smog it and put your old engine back in.It's a lot of work but ou'll get it legal.Something tells me that even if you had you smog equipment on it would still fail.

Depends on the county.Where I live you only smog when you register for the car for the first time and that's it.La I believe is every year.Sacramento I think is every 2 years. So good luck.Adambros just smogged his 300 hp 355 so it is possible.

It is definitely do-able, I smogged a recently labeled gross polluter 350 with some tuning, tune-up, and a new cat.

Steve has some good recommendations, I am going to do the two motor thing here soon once I get my stroker back. It does depend on the county however, I know lake county and a few other (low population) counties are smog exempt.

The smog here isn't impossible, but it's a b*tch.

Your car won't pass like that. No way in hell. Unless you swap the engines or do something illegal lol.

Yep, Sacramento County is every 2 years and so is El Dorado County, at least where I live. Kind of wierd Steve, you say you only have to smog when you first register your car and I know you are in El Dorado County, must also go by population numbers within the county. Welcome to CA.

Moving to NV, lucky you Steve. I also agree with keeping it clean. Never know when you might need that smog stuff, plus when you start taking that stuff off, your car will run funny cause the computer can't find the equipment, your car was made to run with it, and I can't find any real gains in power from removing it. Just my 2

i have no idea what you are talking about -eric

hehehe

anyway well how about this california is 3rd toughest smog rules in THE WORLD wierd eh.... well anyway

on a transfer title you will be a loaded mode test meaning on a dyno with load being put against the engine 15mph 25mph , no matter where you move into ca you will have to smog your car before you transfer states

put all your emissions equipment back on and reconnect air injection we all know the cat is no good without it...

and the most important tip GET A PRETEST dont want to get labeled a gross polluter.

where are you moving to in california

Just my ... FYI if you end up having to make repairs to pass smog, if you spend $400 or so (I believe you have to have the shop do it in order to have it verified) then you don't have to pass. They'll defer you for I think it's two years before you have to try again.

you have 10 days to change your license and registration from the time you move here or have employment.
