Power break booster...finally failed on me

i finally had it happen to me, My power break booster decided to quit on me, i get vacume at the hoses, yet the break petal is stiff as heck when you push it down, i can barely stop the car, looks like a parts run to autozone, got a few questions though before i go post this on the break fourms

1) How hard is it to install?

2) do i need to bleed the system after the install? (i dont mess with breaks that often, havent had to do anything with them on the car so i have no clue about it)

From what the haynes manual says it looks preaty easy. so im gonna attempt it tomarow.

from the removal of the one in my 1980 camaro, if it is anything like that is just takes some time, but is not that hard at all. you will just have to disconect the brake pedal from the booster so you can pull the thing through the firewall.. before you do that though you just have to remove the master off the front of it and the vac hoses.. Should take about 2 hours as long as you do things in a logical order

You should bleed them for sure when you are done, takes 2 people though.

well just finshed installing the power break booster, (been hanging around 100 degrees down where im at, so i went to the Jyard today and got some exterior and interior pieces, and the power booster, spreaded the power break booster black, hopefully the paint wont burn off under the hood, Btw, I was able to put the power break booster in with out disconnecting any break lines, so hopefully i dont have any air in the system, i dont think i do. I finally found my bumper (berlinetta) badgeing and got some spares for the interior (where the Z28, Iroc, ect badges go) next on my list of things to do is my Cruise control, but i am unsure as to how to figure out what is wrong with it. ill do some searches first before i post a topic about it.

if you figure out your cruise control then let me know

i found a loose vacuum line to the CC diaphram once and i thought i had it solved... but no, i get no reaction from the switch whatsoever. (it got me 2 mpg on my next tank though, lol)

hopefully there is a relay or something i can replace that doesn't involve ripping the column for that stupid switch

I sure will, ive decided to get me a new complete ac systemd (the accumaltor and AC compressor with clutch) with the heat down here in hanford (going to be hitting upwards of 106 degrees) I need to get some cold air flowin Found a remanued at kragens for 180(for both) however i dont think its been converted over to the New ac refregerant, Im going to look up my Cruise control wireing scheme in my Haynes manual and trace all the wires and such. Ill let you know, I really dont feel like pulling my hole column too.

Glad to hear the brake job went good, how do they feel now? New AC sounds good, I did mine last summer and went to r134a and I love it. Forget the cruise control, I gave up on mine and took the whole system out. Not only do I not use it but now my engine compartment looks cleaner.

yea. forget about that factory vac one.. it is just a big chunk of metal and hoses that are pretty useless.. if you want cruise get an aftermarket computer controlled one.. a little box in the engine bay and thats all here is to it and then hook it up to the cruise button.

Breaks feel good almost better then when i bought the car, Im trying to restore the car back to stock state so i really want to get everything working just like it would be right off the showroom floor, so an aftermarket Cruise control wouldnt work for me

you might be out of luck then if that assembly does not work.. because there is no way you can get a new one or parts for it anymore... and getting one off another car is an ok idea. but most of those are pretty much junk too.. I do have a nice electronic one in my 1984 burly that was stock.

Right now im thinking its my switch cause i had a working Cruise control when i bought the car, i know my turn lever is worn out cause when i turn left my blinker keeps going if all else fails i might end up going to an aftermarket cruise control and find a way to hide the either behind the quarterpanels or something similar

yea i have the same switch problems with both blinkers. that is not to bad to replace. the hard thing is all the vacuum diaphrams and such on that thing. if any one of them gets a tiny hole it kills it... or if the seliniod in the thing goes.. then that is a pain too... My opinion was that they made the cruise way way to complicated in the cars for the third gens.. heck my 1980 camaro had cruise which is alot easier to work on and fix... i even have the full scematic for the cruise on the 83'.. and still can not get it to work... although i do have this box right above the brake booster with a few hollow plastic lines that i have no idea what the thing is for....

Hey, mind sending that diagram this way? :P a a scanned pic would be fine, All i got is the wireing diagram for it out of the haynes manual. and so far haynes hasnt been much of a help maybe its time to invest in a Stop repair manual from Helm.

I also thought the cruise issue was my switch, I was wrong though. I replaced it anyway though cause it was worn out and all of the text on it was worn off too, good luck anyway. Let us know how it works out.
