If you want to wait 1-2 months I'll sell a pair of rear KYB gas-a-just shocks off my '89, $30 for the pair.
They sell for $30 each new. These are over a year old, very stiff.
The rears are easy to swap yourself, front struts take some more time.
You can buy the front struts maybe in the meantime.

Yeah, if you're going to do it, do the rears yourself. It doesn't take longer than 30 minutes. Well, maybe 45 with regular tools (im spoiled with air tools lol).

The fronts you might want to have someone else do, unless you feel up to the challenge. They really aren't that difficult, and if you have someone helping that's done them before you'll be fine.

Hey there...

The rear shocks are easy! I had those done with the help of some muslce in around 20 minutes.

And the front shocks were a bit more difficult, but still an extremely easy process. Thank *** to the modified mcpherson strut/spring, there's no spring removal. Just remember not to let the brake caliper hang by the line. LoL.

Good luck and just do it yourself.

Get a Haynes manual. it's got the step by step instructions with pictures too!

some lessons learned from when I replaced mine, first, it is probably wise to replace your Strut mounts at this time as well, they age and the rubber is probably shot, It will be easiest to do this at this time, price approx $160 for both strut mounts, secondly, make sure you use a torque bar on the strut bolts (lower 2 bolts) I think it was around 200lbs, and most bars don't go that high, they are not tightened properly they can move and the noise isn't pretty.

Re: Struts and Shocks for 89 Bird

I am aware of the posting being out of date, but I am sure that many people on here find answers from reading all the posts, old and new, I know I do...so while the advice I offered may not help him, it could hopefully help someone else, isn't that largely why these forums exist? To find out information? Not cool for a moderator to flame a post offering advice and information.

Re: Struts and Shocks for 89 Bird

Thanks for the lesson - There are however hundreds of posts covering this topic thoroughly.

Sorry for the cold shoulder, I just find it odd your 2nd post was to dig up a thread this old, in the CA forum even.
