bought this tuesday

ok, so i went to my friend mikes car lot on tuesday and he had this camaro sitting in the back by his shop. I asked him what the deal with it was and he told me it came in on a trade and that he didnt really want it. I asked how much he wanted for it (i had always wanted a camaro) and he let me walk away (well drive actually) with it for 1200 bucks. Not bad. Anyways, I took it to school and it started a debate. All the kids in auto-shop are between like 15-19, im the oldest in my class at 19. I dont know very much about this car. The side skirts say Z28 on them, and the back says 5.7L TPI. The debate is, none of us know the specs on the motor, is it the 305? or is it a 350? One kid says the motor is from a corvette? but im pretty sure the corvette was an LT1 wasnt it? or that BC something another. Anyways, how do i figure it out, im sure it simple, but im just not too familiar with the car. Ill post pics and whatnot. Is there a website where i can just punch in the VIN?

the way i figure it, its a nice running 92 Z28, so yay. Im just curious.

looks clean and at $1200 you got a deal

looks like an RS to me 15" rims, L03(305 TBI) motor, regular spoiler(91-92 Z28's had a high rise spoiler). look at the 8th digit in the vin if it was a 350tpi it will be an "8", 305tpi would be an "F". think the L03 which is what it looks to be the 8th digit will be "E" I think.

have fun with her

oh Welcome to TGO

Regardless of what the VIN or the badges say, it looks like it's got TBI on it now.

nice clean car. The motor u have in ur car is not a vette motor. Vette motors are tpi 350's with aluminum heads. UR car is obviously a tbi. As far is proving that its a 350, well the easiest to tell is on the vin number. from left to right on the 8th digit on the vin, if it says the letter F then its a 305. If it has the number 8 then its a 350. U might also check the rpo codes.

The VIN won't tell him it's a 350. Even if it's an 8, it would have to have TPI to be the original engine.

just as said before that looks like a 91 to 92 rs that has z28 badges
looks like a 305 TBI (Throttle Body Injected)

this will make it easier for us
there is going to be a list of 3 digit codes either in the center console or the rear hatch in a side compartment most likely keyed

take a pic of that and post it so we can decode the options the car has.

Looks like an RS to me, unless somebody went through the trouble to swap out the TPI in favor of TBI, change the hood, change the wheels, change the grille, add the plastic piece surrounding the hood latch, and change the spoiler just to make it look like an RS but didnt change the badges, which is pretty unlikely. Check the 8th digit of the VIN I'll bet you its an E which means its a stock 305 TBI RS with Z28 badges.

Still a deal though. How many miles? Can we see the interior?

lol, date on camera wasnt set cuz i hadnt used the camera for a long time. so it reset to jan of 05. i had taken pics with it a coule days earlier. It is the 305 with the TBI. Not the TPI. The explanation of the Z28 badges is that the skirts had been damaged and the owner switched them from a Z28 that had been in a front end collision. The miles are 68,492. I havnt driven it since i brought it home. My drivers liscense is suspended. The interior is clean, i need a new overhead interior light, and the cigarette lighter deal is missing. Other than that it is really clean. I really like the car and am planning on having a great time with it. 1200 bucks for a running car is a deal just about anywhere, and anycar. Im very happy with my purchase and love third gen camaro's. Thank you for all of your help, and i cant wait to be a big part of the camaro community. My old car was an 89 ford probe, my and my brother built it up and got it down to a 10.9 sec 1/4 mile. It was turbocharged and alot of fun, but i got bored and wanted something new. So here it is.

Boosted Probe V6? I buy an 11 second quarter mile.

I think we all would agree that if he's shooting for that in the Camaro he has, the TBI has got to go. I love mine for daily traffic battle however.

10.9 on the 1/4 mile. i can post a pic of the dyno sheet. 23 IBS of turbo will do that to a car. Im not shooting for that in my camaro, i kno this cars got *****, what do i have to prove? the probe started off as a "Haha like it could ever really be fast" and it ended up draining me about 10 grand, but it was way fun. I sold it cuz i was bored, wanted somethign else, and i kinda needed the money for college. Anywho, im having trouble with the dimmer switch, anyone wanna help? i cant find a picture of what the diff fuses in the fuse box are for.

Re: bought this tuesday

Old topic here but you can distinguish 305 from 350 by the size of the harmonic balancer. "MOST" of the 305's had smaller/skinnier ones where the 350's are quite larger. Oil dipstick tube are on opposite sides as well "Most" of the time.

I like that idea. I plan on removing all IROC emblems next time I paint mine.

Re: bought this tuesday

the turbo probes were pretty fast stock and light weight, don't think it would be that hard to get one into the 10's.
