smog question.

Hey guys. currently driving a bone stock 91 RS. 305 toilet bowl injection. A buddy of mine has a 350 out of a 74 camaro hes currently using as a race car. Had a motor built and said hed sell me the complete running 350 for 250 bucks. its not pretty but runs strong. I was wondering with the smog advances is it even worth tryin to get a fake smog nowadays? My buddy has 5.0 and is payin about 400 bucks for a smog. But not sure how long thats gonna last haha. thanks guys.

Re: smog question.

use the long block and get a chip burned so it will run nice and clean. you can mod a TBI, just have to get creative with it

Re: smog question.

Smog. What a Pain In Our A$$ Subject!

You didn't mention where you lived and what the general 'laws' are. Here in Cali there's a couple loopholes in it. Depending where we live, there are areas around the county that are considered 'Unincorperated'. Those folks don't even have to worry about the occasional smog recirtification test every other year or so; They just have to get one when it's purchased AND when it's sold.
Again, you didn't give much specific info of your ongoing testing requirments; but here's what some of us do to get around all that red tape.

Where the loophole is located is FIRST, you must be registering your vehicle in on of the unincorporated counties. What we do is go to the DMV to start the paperwork on the TITLE change-over, stating that the car is a collector vehicle and you will be placing it on an insured 'non-op'.

If you played this correctly, you will receive in the mail within the month the changed over title and the notice that it is currently on a non-op program. After two to three months later, you should be able to go back in and take the car off of the non-op status and receive your cleared title. It sounds like you've probably already placed the car into your name, but there's way's to work this through with just a bit more. Let me know if this helps or if it's deeper detail info

Re: smog question.

It depends what's in the 350. If its a "race car" engine, almost nothing from your car will bolt on to it. It has old style heads so your TBI intake wont fit on it, nor will your serpentine accesssories. It has an old style block, so your flexplate/flywheel wont bolt up, and the dipstick is on the opposite side. And the camshaft is probably something huge, so it will never idle under a TBI setup and computer.
You're better off with a later model roller 350 block. Go hook up with Fast355 and he can build you a great TBI 350 on paper.

Re: smog question.

ya its pretty much a stock 350 out of a 74. havent really looked into it. hes just usin the chassis for a dirt track car. But this 305 just isnt impressing me at all. now its kind of a debate whether to convert to TPI or just flat *** say screw the 305.

well if its a 74 its gonna be a 2 piece rear main seal, as well as perimieter bolts heads and different manifold pattern

so pretty much what kevin is saying is true nothing will work

you can convert to tpi without going to the ref as it was an engine option that year only thing is all emissions equipment has to be there. when you convert.

pm me if you have any questions ill help you out
