Anybody know how "forgiving" smog sniffer tests are?
Just curious how perfect an engine really has to be in order to pass the sniffer test. For example, assuming it still looks like the stock 305 and has all the required equipment, could say a mild-moderate 383 (lets say 350 RWHP), assuming the tune is dead on, pass within the limits?

3.492rs: I gave up trying to smog and staying legal, I pay a hefty price for my smogs now
My car has all the proper emissions parts (minus the cat), a/m parts with CARB #'s and always passes the sniffer, but I always go through the hassle of having to add/remove the cat every 2 years and they always assign me a test only smog.
I'm done with the enhanced smog BS that has cost me so much $ over the years for parts and inspections.
I've recently purchased a PO BOX in a smog exempt county (less than an hour away) and eventually plan to register all 3 of my cars there, just to spite "the man".
I don't plan on doing anything radical with any of them, but just knowing that if/when I do the LS1 swap in the '88, or decide to mod the current LS1 or GTA with something unfavorable to CARB, they can eat it.

My son lives in Coarsegold (Madera County) and he told me about it, but we weren't sure.

I chose Amador, as it's much closer to me. Madera is one as well.
Keep in mind they still require a smog with change of ownership in CA, but that's it.

not for long, CA is changing laws. More test is added to 95 and older vehicles. We now have to do EVAP test. Gold Shield Station can now test "Test Only" directed vehicles. They are also trying to eliminate those county. In other words, no matter where it's registered it will need to be smog.........because most of those people drive those cars in "Enhanced Area" ahhhhhh the beauty of being a smog tech.
