Smog law questions

Hi I am moving to CA (Beale AFB) next nov and need to get some help on the smog laws before I swap the motor I am building into the car. First off, do collector plate car have to be smoged? What are the mileage limits on a collector plate car? If I don't do collector plates will I have to top my 383 motor with the crappy CFI I have in it now? or could I go carbed with a EGR equipped intake? How big of a cam can I run and still pass? If i cannot go carb'd could I just go to a normal tbi setup since it is still fuel injected?

oh and I can't find a emmisions sticker under the hood. Where would I get 1?

Thanks!

Re: Smog law questions

I dont think CA has collector plates. Yes you can update an 82-83 CFI intake to an 82-87 carb intake, as long as you have everything hooked up and working correctly, either with stock parts or with 50-state legal parts. You can pass with a 383 as long as the camshaft is not huge. We're running TPI and passing with 224/232 cams, but that's with extensive chip tuning. I dunno how tough it is to tune a quadrajet to pass. You dont want to put a TBI on it, that's almost impossible with a 383 unless you really know how to chip tune.

Emissions stickers are no longer available new.

Re: Smog law questions

I am on active duty now but will be in the national guard when I move so I don't know if that will cut it. I figure I will get the car tested here right before I swap it and that should buy me about a year and a half before I have to do something in CA. The lady at the DMV told me that I can't even get the car tested without a sticker? I guess I will proceed as planned and just keep all of the smog stuff for test days.

Re: Smog law questions

I'm originally from CT and I finally brought my car for a Pre Test @ Smog n Go last month. It passed the Tail Pipe Test which suprised me because of the Hot Cam and my minimal tuning(no egr in bin because of my holley SR I used to have ). The Guy there said I just have to put the Carb EO stickers on for the aftermarket parts and lower the idle for the timing check. I already knew my cold air intake would'nt pass so I'm gonna get and SLP Cold Air. I expected to fail but it was'nt that bad.

Re: Smog law questions

Thats encouraging. I am thinking of running a xe274 cam. If I have to take the cam out to pass the test it wouldn't be as bad as changing back to CFI if they wouldn't let me pass with a carb.
