Ok, here's the deal. My wife and I decided to move up to Idaho falls this July after my daughter finishes school. I will be using the money I had for the Formula to buy new furniture and such for the new house. I am stuck with a dilema. I can either lug this engineless car up there and maybe finish it next year or I can sell it here and when the time is right, but another one. I like the Formula and the new house will have a big seperate shop with a lift so I won't have an issue with storage or working on it but I just don't know if I wanna spend the money for a trailer and the extra gas for towing. What should I do? Obviously most/all of you will say keep it but I want to be realistic.
I swear, it never ends, you get so close to finishing your project then something els comes up. Ohwell I guess, this move will benefit my family more so I guess I can wait.

Holy crap, Steve! Idaho?
That's like in the middle of... some of the coolest landscape ever! Plus the cops drive crappy cars!

Is your company doing a relocation or is this your choice? If the latter, I guess selling the rolling chasis makes sense otherwise, make the company move it.
What the heck kind of work do you do that requires you move every other year?

It's a personal decision as I am goingto be leaving this piece of crap job! Last time I moved was just about 10 miles away to a bigger house when my son was born, that was the only reason. This will be a good chance for us as the houses are sooo much cheaper than here. All the houses there for $200,000 are $750,000-$1,000,000 here and the income rate is higher. We found a bunch of houses. One we want is a 5 bed,3 bath with theater room, large family room, basement, landscaped, 3 car garage and a 30x60 shop. I can't pass this up.
My wife is telling me to keep it but and i don't ned to sell it but I just don't know if I wanna lug it around with me.

lugging it does suck, but what can you honestly get for an engineless thirdgen? If you wanted to sell it, I would have put those l98 heads on that bottem end you just sold, and sold the car as a nice running car with new engine. That probably would have netted you the most cash.

Yeah but it wasn't really 100% then. I still might take it, depending on how much it'll cost me to get it there.

What are the odds we can do a GTG before you go? It sounds like with everything happening, the Formy is on an extended stand by.
Bummer!

This is a no-brainer. Even your wife says to keep the car! Would she really say that just because she thinks that's what you wanna hear? Prolly not.
The cost of a trailer and extra gas won't end-up amounting to very much compared to the overall cost of the move.
Think about how excited you'll be when you see your project sitting in its own real work space!
And by keeping it, you'll have the benefit of still owning a solid west coast thirdgen. Any thirdgens you might find up there will prolly be full of rust.
Keep it.

Good point, actually, tow the car up there and sell it as a california car, then people will be all over that ****.

I am an idiot. To even suggest there was an option to keeping it... What was I thinking?
Again, a SoCal TGOer makes it clear to me.

Mike your confusing me.

For the second time this week a SoCal TGOer makes things clear to me. Another thread earlier in the week and then this one:
Keep the car or not? There's only one answer: KEEP IT.

Sorry... I was drinking one of my Xmas presents last night.

I would think that renting a trailer and towing your car behind a moving van that you'll probably already have isn't that big of a deal, right? That sounds easier than trying to find another clean project car in the future. Or if you're just trying to find a reason to get rid of it, I'd say just get rid of it.
Christ, losing a key 3rd genner, sucks!
Didn't realize you didn't like your job up there, sounds like it's for the best though.
Seems like a lot of pros to keep it.
I'd get the estimated cost to get it over there, of course that's if having a 3rd gen over there is a hobby you want to keep.
I'll be heading up that way tomorrow, so hopefully we can meet up! Give me a call.

It wouldn't be too bad but I have 2 other cars to get up there and I will have to drive those 2 and the Uhaul with 2 people. I could have my mom drive our 4runner, my wife in the Audi, and myself in the Uhaul and the Formula but I would have to drive my mom back here and drive all the way back again. It's just a bit of a hassle. I do love the car and will most likely keep it.

Ya know, here in CA(and NV, too, pretty sure), there are these things that fly... we call 'em planes. I'll bet they have them in Idaho, too. Originally Posted by 87tpi

And with the price of gas these days, a one way ticket back for mom will actually be less expensive than driving her back, plus you driving back to Idaho a second time.
If you really WANT to keep your car, you'll come up with a way.
Otherwise, Jeremy might've called it.

Steve, I agree, buy some earplugs for the way up with Mom, and a plane ride for her way back.
Best of luck to you out in Udaho

She WON'T fly she says. I'll figure out a way.
We found a house with an 1,100 sq ft. garage and a guest house that we want to look at.

Keep the car I made a move from Buffalo to Florida and felt the same way I rented a car hauler and drove it right up on it ,it ran me $265.00 one way I never knew I was pulling it.I Thank god I made that decision try to find one in good shape now adays let alone try to find the parts to restore it they don't come cheap or easy to find, you have a great lQQking car go with your gut feeling and your wife take it with you . Best of luck on your new home.

I LOVE Idaho- there's a family farm just outside Twin Falls, katty corner to Evel Kenevil's old Snake River Canyon jump site. Having spent lots of time up there and can tell you that it is common to have rust on not that old of vehicles. Since my cousin's farm, they just accept that having nice paint jobs on their 4x4 trucks even though the lower panels have rust perforation is just part of the car game. In addition, hot rods like our camaro's used to be a rarety in those parts because of the ice; just not practical, so as it was mentioned, a cali car of this type is much rarer than here.
I would think that it should come down to how much time it would take to put together another engineless shell to the quality that your current 3rd Gen car is at. If it's in really good shape, the odds are it would be difficult to find an equatable Idaho shell that dosn't suffer from ground in dirt and surface rust, pitted windshields from the windy time of year and rock chipps thrown up from the tar and gravel back roads.
If I remember correctly, Idaho Falls isn't subject to the strickter smog laws of towns such as Bose or Core De' Lain; so you have more room to modify without such strict smog laws. Please be aware that the Idaho State Police are fanatical radar users. If you don't already own a Valentine One detector, you should give it serious thought.
If I didn't have obligations here I'd move back there in a flash..... I even learned to drive there on the family tractors and farm trucks. At 13, we'd race around the back farm roads at 100mph. damn those were fun times! Be prepared to invest in snow mobiles and dirt bikes!!!!
