Should I buy a DD or take the bird to College?

I have DUMPED a ton of money in the car and I LOVE driving it. It is near completion, but I am not sure if I should take it.

The car has a lot of sentimental value being my father and I started building it and he passed away a few years ago. Being that the car is getting wrapped up, I don't know if I want to risk taking it to college and have someone crash into it or something and total it.

I can afford to pick up a C5/newer GTO to DD but I have already been overseas for so long and I really miss my bird. That with the fact that I could have more fun in College by not having to buy another car. I am just worried about my bird. It sitting isn't good for it either.

Any college horror stories?

Well, I could cut out getting a new DD and just DD this and save the coin. Put it towards making college a bit more fun. haha...

I just really love driving the bird. This is I will be going to school about 9-10 hours from where I store the bird. Besides, I would have to pay twice the insurance/registration if I get another car. Then again on the flip side I won't have to worry about reliability.

May depend on where you are going. Most colleges appear to be heavily populated by enviro-fascists who may think your gas guzzler should be "modified". It wasn't in college but I did have my '67 Firebird convertible top cut and the body keyed more than once. How about a DD moped?

Not yet. I have thought about taking that to college... but I would rather have something I enjoy. If I don't take the bird I want something newer and less hassle I think.

I had the same issue. No way should you let the bird sit. Finish it and drive it. Don't let it rot. If you let it sit and someone steals it or a hail storm destroys it, you'll regret that too. You only live once. BTW, hot chicks dig third gens.

It already got hit by a hail storm and got my hood pretty good... But it will be getting painted soon. There are pro's and con's to both sides...

I know it shouldn't sit, it's been sitting when I am gone... I am stationed overseas and I think I have only put about 3k miles on it in the last 3 years.

Re: Should I buy a DD or take the bird to College?

good arguments either way I suppose. nearly anything that could happen to it while DD is repariable. I guess it more matters if you want creature comforts like a/c, automatic and all that.

Re: Should I buy a DD or take the bird to College?

I brought my Camaro to UC Davis with me. I also have a Grand Marquis though, but I definitely love that my Camaro is out there parked next to the Merc ready to drive whenever I want.

I also dumped a ton of money into mine, not to mention blood sweat and tears. After all that, the LAST thing I wanted was to just have it sit for a couple years. You put that work into it, now that you don't have time to work on it means it's your turn to enjoy it.

Where you're going to school also matters I assume. Take multiple measures to make sure it doesn't get stolen.

Park where the campus police likes to sentry at, have a good alarm system. I had drove my Camaro my first year of college, I get a lot of attention about it being bad ***. It's gonna be more bad *** once I get it painted and finally drive it after two years sitting ( I've pretty much redid everything engine tranny suspension, soon to be paint). I agree about driving it during college because you'll love the attention you'll get.

Yes DDing a third gen gives you that extra little badassery around the campus, but it puts a little more strain on the car in the long run.

I DD mine and love it, but am always sure to park where there is a camera watching but far enough away that any ***** who swings his doors wide won't ding me, and I will put a club on the wheel when in parts of town where it is more likely to be stolen.

I say go for it, why chase tail in college when you can have it chase you?

You're a college student, minimize the debt. That and i really hope you're going for a STEM degree, or you're just wasting time and money.

Woohoo! Team steering wheel club! I use mine every day. Can never be too careful.

If you take your car to school, just be careful and smart with it. I always like to think people will respect other people's car, but college drivers are idiots. I commute to school, and came outta class one day to find some jerkoff in a Honda accord parked next to me, crooked as can be, so I laughed cuz it's funny that people can't drive, only to walk around the other side and find a tire rub scuff going from the quarter panel all the down to the front of my door..... It's stuff like that you have to watch it for.. Lets just say I'm sure the owner of the Honda wasn't happy when they came out to their car no body or paint damage and the giant scuff came off, but still.. I say take it to school, you'll regret it if you don't. Good luck

Re: Should I buy a DD or take the bird to College?

If you have that much sentimental value in it, put it in storage. You'll be thankful later. Find a cheap car on CL for college.

College kids could care less about slamming doors into your ride. Or sitting beer cans / bags on your car. Sitting/leaning on your car is another popular college activity. Just what you would need...some drunk girl side swipes your car and drives off (then you get to deal with your insurance and rate increase).

All of the above have happened. You can use the argument that this happens anywhere, but the only issues I've ever had were in my college parking lots....

Just my opinion about this....
