Title Issues

Ok so I bought an 82 z28 here in colorado and im happy with the car, still needs some work but its good for the moment. Only problem is when the original owner sold it to the next guy the 2nd guy never got the title switched to his name before he sold it to the 3rd owner, they all did a bill of sale (only they wrote it out instead of filling out the form) so I have the original titled signed by all the previous owners and their bill of sales to the next owners all the way up to me. Will the dmv be able to switch the tile to me name since i have the paper trail and the car is not stolen? If not how can i get the title done?? Thanks alot.

Re: Title Issues

best thing i would say to do would be to call the dmv first thing on monday morning and ask, they should be able to give you the most accurate information, you cant have the title work done untill monday anways im thinking. ive called the dmv here a bunch of times with questions and the ladys say if i cant tell you ill have someone give you a call back that does know the answer. itll atleast save you the gas and the trip if it dosent work out smooth. but with the bill of sales i would think that they could do it.

Re: Title Issues

Gangsta, I think that you are in a little bit of trouble. Colorado no longer requires a bill of sale, just correct signatures on the title work. What your likely going to have to do is have the guy that sold the car to you go down to the courthouse with you and get the title in his name, then he can sign off on the new title to you.

Maybe you already have this handled. Good luck.

Re: Title Issues

Oh thats not sounding good at all. The guy I bought it from ended up moving out of state. I've had the VIN checked so the cars not stolen so I know I'm at least good there. The title has all the correct signatures on it from buying and selling but theres only 3 sale spaces and Its the fourth owner who sold it to me and his signature is the only one not on the actual title but he wrote up a bill of sale. Is there anythin else I could do since he moved out of state and isnt gonna be back til like next winter I think.

Take the paperwork you have to Motor Vehicles and see what they say.

I don't know if they would take it, but maybe you could "jump" the title over the last owner. By scratching out his name in the purchaser section, and just writing in yours and signing it? All I know is that they guy that sold it to you will need to have his name typed on the front of that title for it to be legal for him to sell it.

Better Take Tim's advise and call them first.
