paint question

jay will prob. be all over this one... my red car gets all chalky in the hood area really quickly and it water spots really easily. in the last 6 months, i've buffed and waxed it twice. it will look good initially, but within a couple of weeks, it starts getting dull and spotted... both times i buffed it, i used 3m finesse-it II. the first time i waxed it w/ nu-finish, the second time, i used black magic wet shine. are there any waxes that work better, or am i doomed to having red car chalkiness?

Man i wish i knew.. I'm still learning what causes what and why when it comes to paint..... Was it a single stage paint. That could dull out but not that fast.... The 3m finesse-it II is that a glaze? Cuz i use perfected 3 buffing compound.. That perfected 3 machine glaze. with a foampad.

Wish i could help out more

who makes perfected 3? how expensive is it? the finesse-it II, i'm assuming, is a glaze. it says "finishing material" on the bottle... the paint is base/clear...

Perfect is made by 3M. and you need clear coat if you dont want that to happen again.

I'm certainly no expert on the subject, but this is what I know from experience:

Probably what is happening is the clear coat is breaking down, it will look like the paint is flaking and then get a whiteish, dull and dry effect to it. This can be caused by excellerated "normal" oxidation, or chemical reactions between pint and primer, or paint and clear.

Another cause to the same effect could be use of waxing compunds too soon after the reapaint and the paint did not fully harden ?

sounds like oxidation from not waxing/buffing enough. nothing you can do about it but wax more often to polish out the old oxidized clear. they probably shot a cheap maaco style clear that just doesn't have any durability.
