Re: Paint options
To get a good job done, you're looking at 3-6k or more depending on how much prep work is needed. Save your pennies for a professional job. A 'stick shift 91 Z28 convertible is well worth it.

What he said :-)
Paint isn't cheap, but I do suggest asking around at car shows on who did the work and what was done and how much it costs.
There are still a good number of guys who paint out of their houses around.
Also as mentioned it will depend on how much work it needs before the paint is applies.

Re: Paint options
To do the job right, with base/clear expect 2k minimum.
If you are willing to extend yourself and its not major work you can do most of the basic prep yourself and then just take it to a guy to lay the paint down.
Cheapest? I payed about $900 total for a single stage urethane paint job on my GTA. However, that was because money was tight, and quite simply the paint was in HORRIBLE condition. Clearcoat on all vertical surfaces was peeling. The car base coat was lifting on everything showing the primer underneath. In general, the only thing missing was exposed metal and rust.
9D1BURD and I replaced all of the panels that were damaged, did some basic body work under some instruction, primed those spots, and sent the car off to Maaco for the paintwork.
I would only recommend this if you want to avoid running around in a red-neck car.
The paint is about 5 years old now and still looks good. There are issues with it however. Its single stage. The paint is soft, rock chips are likely to dislodge a large chip of paint, especially at an edge. Thickness is not uniform.
If you can wait, wait to have more on hand for a real paint job.

Re: Paint options
Its a simple color, so its not hard to do white. It needs a polish to shine again, but for the most part the major problem with it is the durability of it. Its simply too soft. small rock chip can cause a huge chunk to fly off.
