engine runs outa steam before the lights

I had posted this earlier in the TPI section, but I believe this is a better place for it.Anyway, 86Camaro ZZ4 ,ported stock intake ,simese runners ,2400 converter,3:73 rear,26 in tall 295/50/15's.Going through in 3rd, seems to run out of power before the lights ,MPH's at 101 + , @around 5100.ccidenly poped it into OD and went 102.7.This pretty much summed up my thoughts on gearing.yesterday I put on some 275/60/15 on the rear ,2 in taller and about 1 in less width.Ive seen that most of the quick TPI cars run 3"42 rears, and by the calculator mine comes out to approx 3:50's .Sooooooooo ,this should help the car out a lot,,keep in tq band longer etc,.Any input apprciated

I'll venture a guess and say it's your intake. I have a ported stock intake as well, and with 3.27's I still run out of steam before the end of the 1/4.

What cam are you running? Have you done anything else to the fuel system? The problem may lie elsewhere and not just with the gearing.

Well, took the car to the strip Friday night, still had severe traction problems, car was going through the lights @ 5000, still a little high.I was shifthing @ around 4800 and leaving at idle at half throttle, and flooring it around 30 feet out when it quite spinning.Best 60 was a 2.10.on a 13.700@100.7 in 3rd.Guess i'll either need a gear change,or get it breathing better. As stated in my other post ,I could jump MPH up by hitting 4th,but really dont like to do that.

well if your not going to mod the motor to pull any higher than 4800rpm you'll either need less gear or taller tires. all in all they cost about the same.

Yeah,I was hoping the 28 in tires would help more then they did,not really sure which way to go at the moment,Like many of us,I have too many projects going at once,The Camaro,PROM burning,my AMX ,and its already gone 12.9's,really need to finish it .
