I think the purpose of the autocross classes is to limit the amount of modifications to keep the cars in relatively the same classes.

You wouldn't want a NASCAR running against you in an entry level oval race nor would you want a KART car racing against you in autocross.

The more changes you do, the higher up the competition class you move.

Depends on where you are at on the west coast. The dragracing that we do up here is all open. PLus we do what is called Car club Challage. Car clubs racing against each other for times & points. It is really fun lol

Edit For autocrossing & other stuff get involved & find out what the rules are.

I think there's an SCCA class for that. GT or something. You're classed by engine size. It might be different from Canada but IIRC you can enter ex-Trans Am series cars and stuff like that, full tube chassis cars, etc.

The SCCA Autocross rules can be found here:

http://moutons.org/sccasolo/Rules/index.html

An F-body would fit into at these classes:
F-Stock ("F"-stock - the stock category. Monir mods allowed)
ESP ("E" Street Prepared category - somewhat prepared card)
CP ("C" Prepared - full race cars)
SM ("Street Modified" - Street-legal near-full race cars)

Note that the f-bodies dominate FS and ESP. In fact, the FS national champion car this year was a 1989 IROC.

Ooops. Forgot to mention, an 82 (or at least a 3rd gen) won ESP at nationals too.

hi i'm bud ... in response i agree you should look at www.nasaproracing.com and check out their american iron extreme most anything goes there. However you will need to get a competition license to run with them .....thats good... for both you and them. they also run a class called AI (American Iron) not as many mods allowed. you may really fit into this class more than you think if you are still running your car on the street. I personnally run in the Camaro Mustang Challenge class or CMC.
this is almost what is a spec class. Find out about it @ camaromustangchallenge.com .... 5.0 very little mods in the motor specified tires and lots of seat time .... don't get me wrong this is real time racing. I will try to post a picture of my car asap. So cal runs all the tracks from Phoneix and vegas to Buttonwillow while norcal runs Sears point down to Willow springs with Laguna seca and California Speedway this year in March. This is for real racecars but if you go to the website you will see you can buy a car to start racing in for $6000.... and you will run world class track most of the time with the AI and AIX guys.

If you want to go racing this is a great place to start. But there is always that license thing and you can plan on spending a couple of grand just on that. So they (NASA) also have a series of classes callled HPDE High Performance Driving Events. All you need is a safe car to run this. and you will get about 80--90 minutesd of track time per day ..... if you don't think that sounds like enough then you haven't ever been roadracing. I started there just over a year ago with my S2000 and now I have a full blown race carw/trailer, 12 racing tires and 1 set of rains... oh did i mention you will race in the rain. and that down the straight aways at Thunderhill or willow springs depending on your gearing you might be doing 125-140 this really seperates the players.

One caveat, HPDE is divided into 4 classes and you can have a instructor ride or drive with you in 1and 2 just for the asking.... I mean FREE!!!!! Derek Daly's classes @ Vegas start around $2500. Also is you check SCCA you will see where you can get your novice permit in one weekend running with them. You will have to have a racecar capable of passing tech and all your personal items i:e: Helmut, Sa2000 no motorcycle helmuts , gloves , shoes, suit, figure at least 1500 but you can get an SCCA novice license which NASA recognizes but snobish SCCA doesn't recognize the NASA license. You can then run in a SCCA class called ITE Improved Touring (Eveything goes) do not expect to win this class as there will be 500,000 $ vipers and lots of Z06's in it. Well there is the rundown on the california racing scence that took me about 2 years to find out. As a writer I am sorry about the length but it just felt like another article to me.... if you just want to take your car out and run it be sure to check out HPDE it has a link on CAMAROMUSTANGCHALLENGE.COM you will be well recieved and have a blast for lo bucks.
