1/4 mile estimates, 305 TPI - 5 speed

Goin to the track this friday and wondering what you guys think I will run. I searched past threads and think I might come up with a low 15 second run. What do you guys think?

-1988 IROC-Z
-305 TPI / 5 speed
-G92 with 3.45 gear
-optioned without A/C (yeah its hard to believe, but it doesn't have factory A/C) so it doesn't have all that A/C weight
-Interior is stripped, theres basically only 2 seats and a dash.
-No known engine mods and it's a GM exhaust system.
-Brand new Z-Rated BF Goodrich tires.

The car is bone stock except for the weight reduction. What do you think? I'll post the results in a couple of days.

You sure its not a 1LE? They didnt have ac. Sounds like a nice car. Should be a low 15 second car it sounds like.

A lot of cars didn't have A/C, not just the 1LE's.

Well i was just looking at his sig and he has the g92 with 3.45 gears and all the good stuff, sounds like a stripper to me which is basically what a 1LE is so I thought maybe it's a 1LE.

There were only something like 8 of them made in 1988 though, so it's not likely.

comon guys...that car can run a 14.8 in its sleep...and youd have to be a sh!tty drive not to break a 14 in that car....

i granny shifted my ride the first few runs...14.8-14.7-14.68...the 60 fts from 2.02 to a 1.91

after i got consistent on my launch i beat on it for 3 passes...14.22-14.19-14.12 all at 95.5-96....only mods are a fartmaster, k&n, and minor plenum porting

car is a full weight 91 gta lb9 t-5 g92
(soon to be a full wieght LT4 t-5 g92)

i would expect a 14.7 or better

(edit was a typo)

It doesn't have 1LE in the rpo sheet. It's also missing JG1 and it's got single piston calipers at all four wheels so I doubt it's a 1LE. It's a hardtop and the only option it has is power windows, it even has the decal and stripe delete. It's very likely the car was raced as a road racer but I havent really been able to dig up the car's past.

But as far as times go you think high 14's are possible??

Well it turned out to be an ugly night.

I only managed one run since it was so busy and some guy in a 98 Z28 decided to slide into the wall and it took almost an hour to clean it up.

Race weight with me in the car and 3/4 tank was 3360lbs.

It was my first time ever running at a track. The run was 15.99@92mph. Obviously this sucked but the upside was the 92 mph trap speed. 60' time was an ugly 2.8 because I was fishtailing the whole 60'. I was so rushed I didn't even get to check my tire pressure or anything; they turned out to be at an ugly 35psi. With a trap of 92mph, I should hit 14's easily with practice. I really can't complain since this car is bone stock right down to the AC paper air filters

Suspension mods are next before I even think of hitting the track.

see dude..you got the speed for a 14.8 right there

lower your tire pressure to about 28 psi or so..

how were you launching?,..i cut 1.9 60's on street tires with the stock bushings still in the rear suspension...so the rear suspension isnt as bad as people think...ive seen guys cutting 1.75-8 on drag radials with the stock bushings...

what rpm did u shift at?...did u go through the traps in 3rd or shift to 4th?

i have almost the same car as u, so im sure i can give u a few tips

I brought it up to 2k then I slipped it and pinned the gas. I was spinning both tires through the whole 60' almost. I think I need to practice a bit with the amount of power I need to lay down.

I was shifting around 5200 or so and I think I went through the traps in 4th gear.

i do it one of 2 ways depending on track conditions

if the track is tacky, i hold the rpm's at 1,800-2,000..and i side step the clutch...one of 2 things will happen...if u drop it and floor it right away the tires are gonna spin...if u drop it and hold the throttle at 1/2-2/3's get to the tree then mat it...with my 3.42;s the tires dont spin very much and the r's jump right up to 5,200 and stay for about 2 seconds and then i leave it matted shift 2nd and third...

if the track i s greasy youll have to play with the clutch on launch

again hold the r's at 2 grand or so and when it goes green you wanna feather the clutch out about 75% and be at 60% throttle to the tree. then floor it and the clutch should be out already...now doing this method can wear out a clutch if not done properly...when u launch spin the wheels just a little bit to help the car get up and go

both of these methods have gotton me 1.98 and 1.92 60 ft.

i shifted to 2nd at 5,200 ,,into 3rd at 5,400 and shifted to 4th at 4,400....

HTH

Yeah I like your methods, I definitely need to play with the clutch a bit more. I'm sure I could cut a 2.0 60' time and hit 14's 100% bone stock

I was under the impression that in order to have a 1LE, you needed to have an L98.

Nope all 1LE required AFTER 1988, was G92 ordered with just the C41 standard heater. Which meant 305 manual or 350 auto only.

Wow those are some good times, I dunno if I'll hit the track again bone stock though. I'll probably have my headers, cam and plenum ported next time.
