I just ordered a Strange rearend for my car, with 2" long metric studs. What is the NHRA rule for stud length when using slicks? I've seen guys get kicked off the track because they were using stock studs with their slicks. Will mine be okay? Thanks.

 

The stud must protrude into the hex portion of the nut at least the diameter of the stud.

This means your 12mm studs must extend at least 12mm past the face of the rim.

It doesn't matter if you have slicks or not. It depends on what rims you use. Race rims usually have a thick center such as Weld Drag Lites. Stock studs won't extend far enough through the rim.

 

so what kinda size studs and lug nuts would u need for the drag lite rims? becuz i plan on gettin them with some slicks and also a posi and while thats gettin done i think ill get the longer studs while the posi and gears get done. also who is the best company to go with for the studs?

 

With Drag lite rims I think 2" is the absolute minimum length. I use 3" on the rear and 2 1/2" on the front. I don't use metric studs. I have 1/2" on the rear and 7/16 on the front.

You'll need special wheel nuts with washers. They're like the old "mag nuts".

ARP and Moroso make good wheel studs but I'm sure there are many more.

 

would it be better to get the open lug nuts or closed? just in case the studs are a bit longer then the lug nut can keep inside of it.

 

Open is always best. That way tech can easily see that the studs are long enough. Mine are open deep nuts so the studs are still inside the nut. There's a plastic screw-in cover for the end of the nut to keep the dirt out. When tech wants to check my wheel studs I simply remove one of the plastic caps.

If you have to remove a closed wheel nut for tech to inspect the stud, they won't provide a wheel wrench or torque wrench so you need to be prepared.

 

yea i think ill go with the open ended ones so i can get thru tech faster. and ill have no problem havin to carry around a torque wrench with me if need be. i just ordered a Matco 1/2'' torque wrench for $177bucks. not bad

 

So with a 1.5mm stud thread pitch, 8 turns of the lug nut equals 12mm.

 

That's one way of looking at it however if you were using acorn nuts, you would be starting to count the threads from inside the rim. The thread count needs to be from the face of the rim or from the washer if you're using shank nuts. If you flipped an acorn nut over so the flat side is against the rim then turned it out at least 8 turns, that would be a better measurement but the 8 turns would be a minimum requirement. More threads would be better.
