First time at the track with the ROC
Well, I took my IROC to the track for the first time last friday. I can't say I was pleased, but I sure as hell wasn't disappointed either. With a mostly stock 305TPI with a peanut cam. The trouble with the track here is that the first about five feet are really slick, then the car would hook up violently. I need a set of slicks, and I think there are a couple of other things that would get my times down closer to where I want them.
1) My O2 sensor is OE
2) My car's Y pipe is crunched down to about half the size it should be
3) Finally, my exhaust was done (previous owner) by Firestone and is smaller dia than it should be.
My best 60' was 2.1
My best R/T was .831
My best 1/4 mi was 15.701
My best MPH was 87.83
Let me know what you all think and anything I could do to help my times out. These times were done on a set of BF Goodrich G-Force T/A KDW's. I know definitely not the best drag tires.
All in all I have seen most peanut cammed 305's with the same mods as me in the 16's or worse. So I don't feel all bad.
Thanks for taking the time to read,
Jason

I forgot to mention that my car was getting a little warm in the staging lanes. It usually was up around 200 by the time I finally got to race. Way too damn many 19 second Hondas were there wanting to fart down the quarter:lala:

Question is what have you done and what haven't you with that 305 and the rest of the car??
Well I think you should start by freeing up that exhaust first. A 15.7 for a 1st timer is pretty respectable in my books considering what you had to work with. Well good luck!

definitly do the free mods get a 160 or 180 stat for it, get ur fan on a switch. fix ur exhaust, play with the timing, with an 87mph trap speed u should be in the low 15s. sounds like the car was hot that probably slowed u down to the 15.7.

Thanks for the responses and the words of encouragement!
Most of my mods are in my sig. I do have a 160 stat in it, although I have no way of turning my fan on early, I will have to get on that. I do have a hypercrap chip that I could throw in just to get the fans on early. I was also thinking of installing a TC lockup switch as outlined in the tech articles.
Hopefully I should come into a little money soon and have every intention of installing a cam and a set of heads, along with full exhaust.

Given what's been discussed so far, do you have a guess as to what I might exepect in the way of improvement, but doing exhaust, and a new O2 sensor? I just did a full tune up recently. You're probably right on the heads. It would be silly to spend 700 bucks on the S/R torquers just to turn around and spend some serious cash on the ones for the bigger motor.

I ran 15.5 on my 87' TPI 305 bone stock...I know I coulda done better, get headers and the other stuff fixed you should be low 15's....heads/cam should get you high 14s....or you could do what I did, and pull the 305 out, set it on fire, and put a 350 in

Good ideas here. I'll be taking my 87 'Bird to the track tonight (IRP) and seeing what it will do.
On the street I'm already spinning the tire for 20', so I'll be interested to see what my 60' times will be.
Read in "Power Secrets" by Smokey Yunick that you should work out your suspension and chassis before going up in power to much. No reason to put a lot more power in the engine if it's not going to get to the ground effectively.
My plan is to
A) make sure the ignition is up to snuff (MSD coil, cap, rotor, wires, AC-Delco Rapidfire plugs)
B) get the car to hook up. (Currently thinking LCA relocation brackets, and new bushings for the transmission and torque arm, to start.)
C) Free up the exhaust. (Hooker headers, 3" cat, 3" exhaust)
D) Make it breath better. (cold air induction, carb spacer, possibly go to a 1.6 ratio rocker arm. Might put a new intake on since I'll probably be needing to change the lifters, sounds like they're sticking.)
Then see where I'm at in terms of ET/speed and how consitant the car and I are.

I still have my LB9 in because I wanted to get a time at the track and pass emissions with the 305 till I drop the complete 383 in over the weekend. I got headers, airfilter, fuel pressure regulator, MSD 6AL, and the car is lowered. Cooper Cobra on the back. The motor has 99K on it and runs awsome but was not taken care of till I got it. On the street I baby it off the line and I can take out 4.6 Mustangs no problem but I went to the track and my best time was a 15.1. I was really pissed because my top end is better than a 4.6L Mustang and I have a 3.08 gear but I was wasting all my torque by spinning all of 1st and half of second till It would hook. My mile per hour was a high 94mph. I think the 305 with control arms and the relocation brackets could be running low 14's. But I'v been putting off dropping in the new motor so screw it I'm dropping the beast in and idleing off the line at the strip. Oh and I was dumping the clutch at 2,500Rpm. What do you guys think the car was capable of running if I would have hooked?
