do you ever pretend to be stupid to race someone?

do you ever pretend to be stupid to race someone? im not talking street racing, but rather grudge racing night at the track..

you ever pretend to be a total idiot and say stupid things when "lookin over" their car or talking about what you have, with the sole purpose of getting them to bet a large sum of money and race you?

(and then whomp them of course)

I have to an extent, mostly though I'll simply leave out the details of my car - the fact that my car looks and sounds so tame help also.

Dont tell anything they cant see, and even then dont tell And I mention any parts that people think might hurt me, like the fact that I was running 26x11.5x16 ET Streets and a 3.08 gear. Most people dont belive a 3550lbs car with 3.08 gears will pull a 1.47-1.49 60ft, and even after they see me do it they dont belive I have 3.08's back there

First of all unless you actually worked on the car don't believe anyone about what's been done or not done to it. A SBC 400 looks the same to an untrained eye as a 305 and NOS can be easily hidden.

When spectators walk through the pits and start asking questions I know there's isn't much intelegence out there. Bad terminology that everyone still seems to use is:

Stall converter
3/4 race cam
Cheater slicks.

As soon as hear any of those I have to dumb down to their level to explain anything. I also get annoyed when I hear "I used to have a car just like that years ago" or "I know my car can run 12 seconds but I've never had it on the track". I love seeing those "12 second cars" run high 14's.

I had the problem of people not believing me when I had my 383. Looking at the car and engine you couldn't believe it ran high 11's at 117 mph. Everyone kept asking me where I hid the NOS bottle.

I hate it when people say that, it seems like everyone I run into used to have a car that did this or that. Another trend that annoys me is people are getting so into wheel horsepower and becoming dyno queens. Seems like they whould rather have a dyno shootout than line up at the track sometimes. All the time people ask what kind of power my car puts down, they dont understand when I say I never dyno the car except for the 1/4 mile reason being except for a ballpark/baseline tune dyno's are really useless in my opinion(in other words they dont mean anything).

Sometimes you don't have to pretend about anything. I had a guy walk up to me at the track and ask me to race his 300Z. I was like why? He said b/c it wasn't an LT1 and he knew he could beat me.:nono: Didn't even ask what I ran, or what I had. I was like sure. Don't get me wrong my car wasn't that fast, but fast enough. I went 14.17 to his 15.23. We got back to the pits and he was like how much nitrous you got?? He drove off when I told him none. Our cars are natural street/strip sleepers, no matter what they sound/look like. Oh well, makes it that much more fun beating them.

I just tell people I have a 305.

I dont tell them I have anything except headers and exhaust cause that is all they can really see. If they are halfway smart or dont want to run me, then I'll tell them what I really have.

I tell them it's stock...cuz it is....so who wants to race?
I can't say I've ever ran against someone at the track, I always come early and make passes by myself, if I have to run "against" someone, I sit at the line for a few seconds, I always run n/c, I never talk to spectators, nobody sees my engine bay, I pit in the grass between our two trucks, so nobody sees under my car either...and thats how I like it.

Sorry for what may be a silly question, but what does it mean to run n/c?

Just be careful what track you do that at, Mr. Dude. Some tracks around our parts can have a rough crowd...

One trick we used on my buddy's 79 camaro was get everything for appearance cheap and find yourself someone who goes on looks.

Rusty headers, valve covers, and leave the stock air cleaner on until racetime.

They always look under the hood, tell em' its a 350 (actually 383), w/ 4 speed automatic.

The Imports don't know any different and the yungin's don't neither.

I CAN'T stand it when someone raves how fast there car is and it has never been on the track. And WTF is a 3/4 cam ?, I have heard this for years.

i start my car with a manual trans and rev it.

get out and while it idles perfectly thru quiet mufflers, i talk about my 3/4 cam, cheater slicks (while they're obviously treaded tires ) and my stall converter (its a manual and i make sure to mention sotmhing off hand before so you know that too).

now that you think im a complete idiot, dumb down everything to my apparent level, and just want to tell me im a dipsh!t and walk away...... i ask you to race for money.

what you said is a perfect example of how what i was talking about works...... :lala:
