Ok I am new to this V8s. This seems very slow to me only had the car for a about 4 weeks it has a newly rebuilt tranny and a stock engine. But my old car was faster than this 93 240sx ran 14.94. I know this car could use a tune up but damm this is slow. where should I start don't want to keep getting beat by honda civcs.

Just think of it as your contribution to GM's CAFE compliance.

The 305 TPI are pretty much all in the 15s stock. Expecially with an automatic transmission. Wich type of gears do you have? You should have a major tune up before doing any mods...

You should add a couple of stuff to your tune-up... Air filter, fuel filter, change engine oil and filter, tranny oil and filter, coolant, O2 sensor, check the timing, tire pressure, etc...

Headers, gears, cam, torque converter. Port the plenum & base.

After that you'll have to start spending some serious coin.

mine ran 14.4 with 39,000 miles with the factory leaking exhaust stock clutch with a blown out throw out bearing and the factory 10 year old dry rotted tires

14.12 with a few minimal mods (flowmaster muffler, K&N, egr walls ground down)

i also can drive the **** out of it

I was not expecting a 12 sec pass but low 15s to high 14s stock . I just going run the 305 till it dies then go to something better. thanks for you guys post i am not going to spend a lot of money on the 305 I just port out the the heads and the intake then just run Nitrous till i save up for something bigger.

Not bad, you gained 4 tenths just by doing a tune up. I agree with you 100% on just doing a little porting then getting something better. I would suggest doing exhaust first thing though. My old '88 picked up 4 tenths by adding a crappy set of 1 and 1/2 headers, deleted cat, and deleted airboxes. Until then though, pretty much expect to get beat by some r!cers and things you really wish wouldn't beat you.

What everyone is dancing around is that the 305tpi/auto combo's received a terrible cam unless you had a 1985 model. The 350/auto and the 305/5speed combo had a much better cam profile. I have never seen a STOCK 305/auto car on street tires break into 14's yet where I am from. A decent cam and some headwork with a proper cold air intake setup and headers/exhaust will gain you a full second on an unmodified tpi setup with stock suspension with no problems. There are lots of other things too but these basics will give you some solid results.

Thanks guys I will do the some porting when I put in the afpr this next week. headers on the why also I think a 305 can get in to the 14's we will see what happens after these two things maybe a 15 flat pass would be nice this time.

Read closer, I said a STOCK 305/auto combo on regular street radials. AFPR, headers, ect are not stock. No reason a 305 can't live in the low 13's high 12's. You just need to do some homework on different combos found on this board.

Best of luck, I hope you get some good times out of it before you upgrade to something different. I see you are thinking of nitrous. With a cam, light headwork, exhaust and intake with a 100 shot there is no reason why you shouldn't see mid 13's all day long. Have fun with it

you don't need that 100 shot even! tunedport335 is running 13.4's @ 98 with an untouched tpi and heads with a better cam and his stroker kit.

my car has ran 13.7's @100.5 with a carb/intake/cam on a 2.04 60'. that mph indicates more power than tunedport's car and i DON'T have a stroked motor. w/ my new converter tailored to my motor/gear combo and rebuilt tranny, who knows WHAT i will run!

on the cam what else goes with this new lifters, pushrods,or just a cam? Do you have to remove the motor out of the car or just remove the fans and radatior. just asking cause I do not know also what type of cam?

Mehh...still got ya beat by 1/2 sec in the 1/8th

Although this year i am focusing on other things than just making the car faster. Focusing more on comfort/driveability/appearance

As far as modding the 305's. I think everyone has pretty much covered it. The auto 305s badly need a cam swap. A nice cam, full exhaust, 2600-2800 stall converter and some free mods should make the car respond nicely.

Re: 15.9 1/4 time 305 tpi
Honestly, the only thing I really pay attention to when I first run a stock car at the track is the trap speed. That'll tell me how it is running. The ET is mainly how I am working with the car and with the first time with a car, it's usually not great. If your trap speeds are around 93 ish the car is running strong.

Get gears before anything else, that will be your biggest bang for the buck in the 1/4.
