Interesting carb comparison

I think this has more to do with drag racing than just carbs, so I figured it fit here:

A friend of mine did a back to back test on his 64 Nova. The setup is as follows:

377ci (destroked 400)
10.5:1 compression
Solid Roller Camshaft (streetable)
4000 converter
4.10 gears

Back to back he tried a 4500 Holley Dominator 1050 cfm carb and a 4150 BG Race Demon 1050 cfm carb. He tuned on each carb until he got the best pass out of each.

He went 3 tenths quicker and 3 mph faster (low 11's at close to 120) with the 45000 Dominator over the 4150 Race Demon.

I thought this was pretty interesting, anyone here try running a Dominator? I scored one cheap and thought i would give it a shot on my car.

I have herd from at least two of my racing friends that have switched from 750 to a 1050 and got 2-3 tenths and about the same mph. All small blocks and runing in the low 11s to 10 sec range.

There's a local altered with a 434 SBC with 2 dominators on it. Runs low 7's.

I run two 4150 850's on my engine.

There's good and bad things about carb sizes. The dominators have 2" butterflies. That's a big hole for air to go through and unless the engine can pull in enough air, the signal to the carb might not be correct. That's why 2 smaller carbs can be better than one large one. The smaller carbs can supply more air and because the butterflies are smaller, they can give better throttle response.

When I was looking for a tunnel ram, I was considering doing dominators. Two tiny 750's or a couple of 1050's would do fine.

As for a race engine, take all the carb formulas and throw them away. It's hard to over carb a full race engine. I've seen three 4 barrel carbs on an inline 6 years ago.

As for a street car, a big dominator is terrible. There's many different version and they all have their own personalities so just because one didn't work right doesn't mean thay all will. You can get that big dominator look on a street car with the tiny 750 Dominator. Nobody has to know it's only a 750. They just see a dominator sitting on the engine.

You'll need a new intake or a carb adaptor. The dominator doesn't use the same bolt pattern as a 4150 carb.

I just have a Proform 750 on my 400 sb. Never thought about going any bigger cause I feel it runs about as good as it can get. 3 tenths is alot to gain.
