Shift point?

Hey guys. My car is a 355 5speed that i race occasionally.
I currently shift it at 6000rpm. I want to try 6500rpm, but is this a safe rpm to try?
The engine has hypereutectic pistons, a 230 degree cam at .05, and edelbrock rpm heads, qjet, dual plane intake, shorties and a single exhaust.

What do you think? Worth the risk to try for a better time?
Best so far is a mid 13 at 104.

Re: Shift point?

6 is already pretty high for a 350. Most I've seen shift between 5-6k. You could always try though.

Re: Shift point?

Shift point depends where your cam makes it's power. Of course, the rest of the engine should be capable of using the cam's shift point.

You want to shift at or just past the engine's peak HP. It does nothing to go any higher because the engine will start to lose power as the HP curve starts to drop off. You shift to get into a higher gear and bring the engine's rpm back down to a usable range.

Re: Shift point?

you dont say what rods or bolts you have if stock, 6k is where id shift maybe earlier it will be alot slower with parts hanging out the side of it, and if you can feel the car slow before you shift you are too late, some even say that when you shift you shouldnt be planted in the seat again, however on a manual that is hard to call accurate.
