fuel pump ???

I seem to be having problems with my fuel pump set-up. I am running a tpi style pump (BBK) with a mallory regulator and i have toasted two regular pumps and now a BBK pump. I am running a carb set up so i have to regulate the pumps down to 7 or 8 psi. I guess that i am asking a lot from the pump so i need to go another route. I have considered trying to find a sumped factory tank with an external pump because i am not interested in cutting up the rear of the car for a cell. can i just run a pump from the existing sending unit or will that put an over load on a new pump. what are you guys running. O yeah the fuel system needs to be able to support at least 550 hp NA. i will run a secondary pump set up for my n20 set-up. any ideas would be great.
Thanks SilverBullet1....

Re: fuel pump ???

how do you figure the tpi pump would support 550 hp ? I'd pull the tank, have it sumped with two ports, run -8 minimum or run 2 -8 lines into a -10 line into a bigger pump....think aeromotive A1000 and that would support the nitrous as well. If you want to run 2 pumps then an aeromotive S/S which is the street/strip pump would be a nice choice as well.

My thinking on a factory style pump was that a FI pump has lots of pressure that would mean that it would also put out more volume. The BBK pump flows @255lph so i figured that it would be more than enough to support a carbed set-up. my theory on the pumps taking a crap is that because i have regulated a 60 pound pump down to 7.5-8 is that it over working the pump and heating it up. I could be wrong but i am really tired of dropping the tank.(what a pain in the ***) and i got less than 300 miles on the new bbk pump.

I really like the aeromotive s/s pump that would really do the trick for the N/A
set up and then i could get a holly blue for the N20 set up(1 gallon tank in the front of the car) Do you think that i will have trouble using the mallory bypass reg that i have now or should i buy a new reg too? How do you find someone to sump a factory tank?

Re: fuel pump ???

buy a bigger aeromotive regulator if you're using a bigger pump. The mallory would be nice for nitrous use. Any radiator repair shop should be able to weld a sump on a gas tank, just call around. I paid $60 and they painted the tank after torching off the old paint/rust combo on the tank itself.

no i thought he was using a dead head regulator until i read the post better. thats why I just removed what I said. We've ran the same setup on our firebird with a stock EFI v-6 pump and a Mallory bypass regulator feeding a 383 with a Demon 650 with no problems. So i'm not sure what is causing the pumps to pop.

Re: fuel pump ???

I think you have something else going on here, crimped return line? low voltage to the pump? something`s not right, I have the same set up...in fact mines a factory tpi pump that came with it, probably an honest 110,xxx before I stuck the regulator on it and carbed it, that was back in 99 or so and I just went 10.20`s this summer on it, I know, I know.. it`s pathetic but hey I was spending on safety equipment all season! I have a sumped aluminum tank with -10 outlets I dropping in this winter, so this one has seen it`s last race track. I`d try `n` keep the in-tank pump if it`s still used on the street.

Re: fuel pump ???

After reading your posts i am really wondering what the problem is. I am still running the factory fuel line so mabe i need to replace the line with a larger gauge. mabe i am creating to much pressure with a small return line because i am regulating the pump down so much. the car was a tbi car to begin with so the lines may not be large enough. The BBk pump i have currently i have really questioned since installation because after i set the fuel pressure to 7.5 i would drive the car for about 15 min and the pressure would drop to nothing. I ended up setting the pump at an initial 12.5 and run the car for about 15min and it would stay at about 6 lbs. I assumed that the pump was heating up and causing the pressure to drop. The feed line to the carb is 3/8 and the return line is 1/4.

Re: fuel pump ???

i hope you're not setting fuel pressure with one of those cheapie guages that mount on the fuel lines going into the carb....if so they're worthless. Get a quality 2 5/8" guage and check pressure with that. the small ones get heat soak and never work right.

Re: fuel pump ???

1/4 return sounds small, it should be one size smaller than the feed, hence a 5/16. sounds like a dud pump to start with, it should push the same hot or cold.
