Re: new gears

If your using the stock 2.73 carrier you will need a ring / pinion for a 2 series. the 2 series go up to 3.08 ratio`s and from there on out the 3 series. you can get a ring gear spacer and use a three series ring / pinion on a 2 series carrier, might be cheaper and better than running that super thick ring gear.

Re: new gears

And with the power you want to run I would use a 3.73 gear for strength. The 4.10 pinon gear is to small always seems to break.

Re: new gears

I've got a very similar set p to his and I run a 4.56 gear and slicks with no problems. Well i did when this motor was in my 1980 Impala same thing except I had 1 3/4 primary long tubes and a mini spool, but same gear same carrier, heavier car, and slicks never broke anything. But i didn't hook up well in second gear, and I had a lot less stall so initial take off was dead. Comes down to whether or not you want to drive it much, if you aren't gonna get it out on the highway or drive consistently much over 60 then go low, but if you wanna drive it do 3.73.

Re: new gears

Yeah, but not mine for some reason. I know it is all original, my aunt bought it brand new, it had a 305 4 barrel, with 416 heads and a factory aluminum intake. IT only had like 50,000 miles on it when I got it. I found the build sheet under the back seat and it came with a 2.41 rear gear stock, according to everything I could find it should have been an 8.5, but it had 26 spline axles, open diff, and a 2.41 gear. I never had any problems with it before, but I probably wasn't pushin enough power to break anything.
