nitrous is fun LOL!!
Alright, i think i'm addicted now and need to build a multi stage baby bottle engine. Our home track finally opened Friday after being underwater for a loong time due to flooding that wiped the area out, did'nt expect much initally, but got to thinking about all the work they've done out there to prep it for last nights Night of Fire event, so i bought in to T&T. They have us pulled back to 1/8mile for a few reason-all flood related, the air friday was terrible.
Fri:
N/A basline pass was 1.49 60' 7.03 in the 1/8th at 9?mph cant remember and too lazy to walk out and grab logbook
figured i'd try the 150shot to see if car could take it and make sure running nothing but pump gas was going to cause detonation issues. I run it off a WOT micro switch so i did my burnout, turned the toggle switch on, staged at a dead idle, last amber lit, floored it and boom she went up and away.
2 nitrous passes within 30minutes-
1.4000 60' for both and ran a 6.502 then a 6.501 at 105mph....i was astonished at how consistant it was
Last night was the NoF, 2nd round i was .018 and opponent was .019 on the tree, i took .02 at the stripe and broke out by .005
he was carrying 18mph on me so i knew i would'nt be able to really judge it so i trusted the car, i still srcubbed off 1mph but broke out....so i begged the owner to let me slip in behind my classes 3rd round for a nitrous pass, told him i'd try to put on a better show than the super shifter guys they had there...he said as long as i do it quietly.
Friday bottle pressure was 900psi, saturday after sitting in my hot car it was 1100psi and i heard bottle pressure affects the hit, so i was wondering what to expect. did my routine, staged dead idle, lights come down, punch it and whoaaaaaaa she stood TALL, LOL!! I was still staring at the clouds with no sense of car coming down yet and the shift light came on, pulled second gear while still in the air and then she started coming back down to a nice landing and away we went.
1.33 60' 6.42ET at 106mph
on a 9" tired, pump gas sbc through the mufflers and the 150shot right out of the gate....i was happy and i think this fall the goal of having a street car running pump gas squirting into the 9's will be a reality
Frined got in on video, but i think it's a standard vid camera so they have to convert it someehow to make it computer accessible, so i have to call him later. BIL said you could walk under the front end and the crowds loved it..which is why i did it, had buddy letter my car up for advertising since most of the spectators were hit with flood damage and need a contractor, and like about 30 people told me, you want advertising, you just made everybody in the house take notice LOL!!!! hope to get vid soon and look forward to doing it again, man that was fun!!

Re: nitrous is fun LOL!!
I've been wanting to get it for years to play with, but just finally bought a small kit (NX Mainline 50-250hp) from a buddy that won it through a race series win for next to nothing. Everything went on easy as pie and the results speak for themselves!! I'm addicted now LOL!!! i wish i could make it go forward before going up next time to see what she'd put down for times, but i think a progressive controller is going to be the order of the day for that to happen, i still need to get a bottle heater yet. but man, feeling that low 1.33 60' was addicting and i was suprised the car would handle all that LOL!!!

i just gotta get a 12 bolt and some chassis stiffening stuff so i can enjoy this motor first before i start spraying

Thats great !!! If you gave it another 25 hp hit you will have that 9 sec slip. And the 1.33 ft was great congrats.

Re: nitrous is fun LOL!!
I pulled some plugs this afternoon, they all look perfect yet, but i'm just leary giving it much more on pump gas, and like i said, at this point i dont know if i'll have the gearing to let it happen since she's spinning pretty good N/A (6600rpm in the 1/4) shooting this 150 shot it'll obviously raise it up, tacking another 25-50 ontop would make it worse...might have to have a 3.73 center section set up...or like i've been thinking for awhile, swapping over to a lenco so i can stack more gears and let it do whatever it wants to...but i'd have to save some serious pennies for that, and then the bracket racing aspect would be all but lost until i got used to pulling sticks.
We'll see what happens later in time, but this first outting with it was a great one, i could'nt be happier and hate to get too overzealious and hurt something.

Yup nothing like pulling second while looking at clouds. It sure is fun. just wait untill that short time is in the 1.2X and the 1/8th is over in @ 5.5 seconds, with a hundred foot wheelie lol. of course some people on here will say its slower going up not out, or do it at 5k density altitude lol, but hell, long as were having fun and not hurting stuff, its all good right.

I was giving serious thought about trying to race with juice once since we're pulled back to 1/8mile, i could not believe how consistant it was friday night T&Ting LOL!!!!
I was just checking Lenco, Liberty, Jericho trannies...for what i want it's a weeee bit outta my price range LMFAO!!! have to do a different gear set and do a two stage so it's worth the while
Re: nitrous is fun LOL!!
yeah i hear you, I have been checking out clutchless transmissions for awhile, lencos use alot of power though, so you really want to save those for when you have too much power lol. I run pretty consistant on the bottle, or off. It is more fun on the bottle though, I run heads up though, so its more run what ya brung stuff...If I had put gas in the gas tank I would have brought enough to spank several big blocks on 2 stages, well see this week. where I usually run is not much more than a parking lot (pit road at Atlanta Motor Speedway) and we run 1/8th mile no clocks, arm drop racing they have some rules lol. I got thrown out for having a 10.5 w tire 2 fridays ago, cuse i left like this

so they whined, and got me tossed, I really didnt get the logic, tell the guy that leaves the best out of all the cars in the class to go get new tires, but I grudgingly did, and outlined the letters, and wrote under it B!T(H since i knew the spy for those guys was going to check, borrowed some front wheels that are a little lighter, mainly for the mental advantage, then turned up the progressive to 50 % for the first round

I was a little worried about the other car, it had wheelie bars and a NMCA number on it so there is a possibility the guy has a clue lol, never saw him
next round couldnt do a burnout to save my bacon, and they guy in front of me turned right pretty bad, so i turned the controller down (If you get one learn to use it blind folded without the instructions, get the build time worked out and leave it, the just change the start %) and did a better longer wheelie, when almost all the cars there cant carry a wheelie since it is so slippery I get alot of attention, usually about 5 thousand people cheering lol. on that 2nd pass the shift light was on in 3rd, and it didnt seem to be spinning the tires and it is set at 7500 rpm, so i was going @ 130-134 which works out to....damn fast for an 1/8th mile lol

heh, you just made a nearly identical pass to the last pass i made in my car!
i went a 6.43@106 with a 1.33 60'. 10.14@131
its good to see a bracket racer trying out some nawwws!

Great job! Really Nice 60ft!!
That was my goal before totalling the 87, wanted to pull a 9.9 on pump gas street trim. Got her down to 10.09 @ 133 with a 125 shot, was also trying to be first to go 9's on a 10bolt, would have to say I still hold a record but not sure... Tried putting more spray to it, but car would not respond, I think thew TPI plate maxed out.. I was not spraying out of hole either due to 10 bolt, I would spray at 20 mph triggered by ecm. Still hit 1.37 60ft off the foot brake. I think you willl surely get it.
Good job

Happy gas is fun
Now that my car is legal to run quicker than 11.49 I'll be using it a lot more. I've pulled a 1.46 60' and far as I know the front wheels have stayed down on the ground
I can never get my buddy to go up to the line and video what the car is doing, think he's scared or something lol

I bet you could've hit 9's with the 10 bolt. With smooth progressive power hitting it, nothing is worse than that initial launch shock. Not that it would say anything about the 10 bolt, just your ability to control the power curve.

couple weeks before that I had it on the bumper.....with the back wheels up too, call me chicken lol, did get a cool bumper sticker though, I cant post the pic, but i will send it to you if you want lol

Re: nitrous is fun LOL!!
sounds good man.... but do yoursellf a favor. Dont leave off dead idle! you are playing with fire, and i mean a nitrous backfire. foot brake the car to at least 2000 or more. That way when your converter flashes it will be a little higher in the rpms.. The high bottle pressure will hit much harder..., but remember this too. it will also be a much leaner tuneup so justbe carefull and watch your tune. on an nx system it is normally based off bottle pressure being at 1050
I remember the days of good ole pump gas!!!! I miss them! lol I had my gta with a 355 and it would run 6.70's on a 150 shot. ahhh I miss that car..

on a 9" tired, pump gas sbc through the mufflers and the 150shot right out of the gate....i was happy and i think this fall the goal of having a street car running pump gas squirting into the 9's will be a reality

Re: nitrous is fun LOL!!
Anyway to answer the question....I dont know really they have no timers at AMS and that is the only place I have run it 1/8th mile, right now I geared it just for 1/8th mile, and if it hits the rev limiter going through the traps my wild guess was really close! its kind of funny, last spring at the GAFBA spring fling i got a trophy for fastest MPH....133.9 , just beating ED Swearingen (the track owner lol) funny how things evolve, now thats 1/8th mile speed, guess the engine overhaul was worth it
Re: nitrous is fun LOL!!
yeah that was worth it
yeah I trapped 149.8 getting out of my second kit at the 1k. I trapped 150 1 week before that doing the same thing. I cant remember my 1/8 though. I did go a little quicker later in teh day. Im not sure if you saw it or not I ran a 8.83 shutting the second stage off again.

While I am in no-way close to you guys' league, I succumbed to the siren call and put on an Edelbrock 70001 Performer kit (50-75-100 carb baseplate) this past week in order to get the '57 below the 12.99 sec at 5800' required for the Pinks All Out filming at Bandimere Speedway this weekend. Best NA at the track this year was 13.27 @ 101 with a 1.85 60', so I thought I'd at least try to equal the sea level performance the car is capable of. An added twist was the E85 I've been running for the past 3 seasons - I just upped the fuel jet to provide the extra volume for E85 vs. gasoline.
I set it up to trigger WOT, with an isolation relay tied to the brake pedal. I've been running the 2-step off the brake pedal (2900 RPMs) as well, simply flooring it when staged and letting go of the brake to launch.
Test & tune last night, 100 shot with 147% fuel increase, 11.996 @ 111 MPH, 1.66 60'. For comparison, I made a couple of NA runs, 13.41 @ 99.6 MPH with 1.89 60'. The isolation system worked perfectly, RT's were the same whether NA or spray.
Taking 2 tenths off the 60' is very definitely a kick in the pants. . .
(By the way, in case no one else picked up on the "LOL" in the thread topic line, I did. . .)

Re: nitrous is fun LOL!!
5 kid, that's a HUGE increase for such a small shot!!! The guys that got me set up told me nos does'nt care what the current atmospheric temps, humidity, etc...are, the juicey juice just makes it own perfect air and off ya go LOL!!!
So ahhh, did it kinda grab you and make ya want to try more yet??? (just trying to reaffirm i'm not the only no2 crack ***** at this point)
Going from 1.89 to a 1.66 is a huge G force leap and that always feels great, i was watching my video of my pass, i put it into frame by frame, that 1.33 60' i had on the laughing gas..was triggered by the back tires
since front end did'nt come down until i was clear of that set of cones all together
none the less though, other than pointing skyward, i could'nt really tell much seat of the pants difference between the consistant 1.4? 60's on race day vs what it did on nitrous, but i could feel/hear it the rest of the way down the track...plus the peculiar smell it gives off too.

Actually, it's not something I expect to do a lot more of. The plate is only capable of 125 shot on gasoline, and with E85, I'm using all that up. I'd have to upgrade the plate; then would come the solenoids, etc., etc., etc. I'll settle for using it when needed to qualify for a class/event.
These Wednesday T&T's are notorious for poor traction due to all of the highway tires with embedded gravel running in the groove. My bottle runs 60' times were: 1.681 (I rolled through the water box instead of backing in like I normally do - my front tires drag a lot of water out of the box), 1.662, 1.666, 1.664, 1.667. Throwing out the first one, that ain't bad. Even including it, the variance is less than I typically see in a race day with that many runs.
That alone makes it tempting to run it. The bottle pass ET's only varied .063 sec., and that included vastly different weather conditions (wind speed & direction, DA variations) and varying (acceptable to low) bottle pressure.

Re: nitrous is fun LOL!!
If i had another bottle for a stand by, I'd love to race an event with it just to see if the consistency stayed the same. First night testing..T&T night also 1.400 and 1.400 60' an hour apart, and then to also run a 6.502 and a 6.501...i was very very impressed. i just hope we can get our track back in shape after the flood to get a 1/4mi number this year on it.
I know ya want to shock slicks really hard to make them work, but i never expected this kind of performance from such a little kit. This NX Mainline set up is dirt cheap, $340 will ship it to your door for everything minus the FP shut off switch and micro switch. I was contemplating getting a 2 stage plate, but i plan to just order another mainline kit, that way i can get another bottle since that's the expensive part of the system, then just run a 150shot out of the hole since it takes that no problem, and then use the progressive controller to ramp in the second 250hp shot about 2 seconds into the run. I got everything to make it happen cept the second kit, so i gotta do more gooder this weekend racing fo mo toy purchases

Re: nitrous is fun LOL!!
As a business owner, I understand mark up, it has to happen to make money otherwise there's no reason to be in business and have the headaches we had day to day, but often times the mark up can get a llittle out of hand, and down to earth vendors will work with you. Heck, we raced down at St Louis at the world street challenge, i looked into a hitman kit they had on the table and offered it to me for $300 outright...is was all good until i opened the box and seen it was for EFI not a carb
but the guy told me after handing me his card, to call him monday and he'd ship one out to me for my app. at the same price. So i called the guy i bought my kit from to ask if it was a good deal and he told me about this mainline kit he had and the price. i paid market value for it, kept the money local which is top priority for me so we both were happy...bottom line, dig around, deals are out there.

Fleabay has the cheapest mainline kits i've seen, other than the guy i got mine from who won this kit and jsut turned around and sold it to me. You can barter a bit on the prices too. My cousin worked for an outfit that made fabricating tools, it was a small shop and every employee raced in one motorsports event or another so the owners of the company had dealership networks set up with everybody we buy things from to build our cars. I had him check for giggles on the NX stage 6 system...his companies cost being a dealer, $220 and change...retails for almost $600. He started babbling on about things i kinda knew the price of and everything price wise is AT LEAST doubled from the advertised price you see in magazines/online, but i would say more often than not prices are tripled over cost to sell retail. That's no crap talk, just the facts, and most smaller guys are willing to work with ya to a certain point.

Edit: well I guess I don't have to dig that much, thanks! Now I just need money... I've got a whole shopping list of parts for the jap car still.

There's not too many honest guys left out there though, most are charging more and we have to fix their f*** ups. Last edited by 327???; Aug 7, 2008 at 10:35 PM.

I am an nx dealer and trust me the nx stage 6 system is not 220.00 dealer price.............

I'm just quoting the price i was told, i shoulda jumped on it at that time obviously, but i was still feet dragging/procrastinating.
Re: nitrous is fun LOL!!
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is- lots of merit to that old saying
so anyway, I tear down the engine (in like 3 hours lol including yanking it) and so far havent found a damn thing wrong with it, 2 pistons have small scuffs from sharp spots at the bottom of the bore, and one ring may have had a burr on it, and left a small scrape on the wall, cant feel it just see it. The coating is still on the bearings! the rear cyls showed a little detonation but the real cyls. were also running alot hotter untill i made it 4 corner cooling. I still need to take the timing cover off to make sure the cam bearings and thrust bearings are ok (going to put new in anyway)....guess i need to reassemble it and spray it harder!

That's too funny, all my nitrous buddies keep telling me the same thing, if it dont hook..it needs more juice to hit the tires harder
if something does'nt sound right, more juice and it'll either work itself out, or show you exactly where the problem was so your not hunting

Re: nitrous is fun LOL!!
well I am starting to think it may be a small piece of jb weld that came from the screens in the valley, it is the same color, and non magnetic (that was the part that had worried me in the first place) there were no other pieces of it in the pan, nothing of note in the filter that i opened up and wasnt losing compression anywhere. I am not done checking every thing I will be disassembling heads soon, to verify that a spring isnt eating into a head (seen it happen)
and, there are times when using more nitrous out of the hole is better than on a delay,on a marginal track bring more power in after the fron settels down is usually going to cause the tires to spin, but if applied while the car is pitching you may actually get more traction...notice i said may lol. At the playground where those pics are from I can put down alot more power than most cars there, a couple of pro cars may get me out of the hole, but most cant, but some of the cars have alot more engine and nitrous/turbo than I do, sometimes they get luck and keep adding horsepower down track and manage to stat straight, most of the time they get very squirlley

Just my 2 cents... My bone stock 350 TPI just ran a 12.2 @ 105 w/ a 1.65 60' on a 125 shot.
It runs consistant for the first 3 passes, then bottle pressure drops down to 900 psi, then slows .2 .3/10's.
I've been playing w/ the timing trying to see where the danger zone is. So far, so good.
New 406 forged hi compression engine being built. cant wait to run in the 10's
BTW love the pic of your firebird pulling the front end up.

Re: nitrous is fun LOL!!
I would suggest an electric bottle heater to help with the pressure dropping. what safety equipment do you have in your car? 10.99 and quicker requires a cage according to nhra rules, I dont know about ihra or psca weather they are different, going faster is fine , if you are upgrading the rest of the car also.

When the pressure drops I can usually dial in my et pretty close, Last week I broke out & ran .03 faster.
I'll be ordering a 8 point cage from Jegs. We have a complete rear Spohn set up w/ loop.
Wednesday night races, you cant run any faster than 11.5. thats also when we need a cage. Tesat & tune can run down into the low 9's I think.

would be a good idea to get a nitrous jet calculator program and setup your jetting that way. the suggested jetting for your typical nitrous kit is very conservative and safe.
