Need to have a rear discussion with the regulars.

Hopefully I can keep this in this forum as it is very race related! I need to run this past the race forum regulars. The people who are using this product. thanks Stephen!

Well, I bolted on a new carb and brand new slicks and possibly maxed out my ten bolt. Spun the teeth off the gear. Then I replaced it and broke the posi(eaton). This was all on the street! So...i Think i'm done.

I found a good deal on a new moser 12 bolt but I called Moser and they said with only 33 spline axles i'll be sure to break it making mid - high 9 seconed power on a 250-300 shot. They reccomended a 9 inch and gave me a price of $3400

There's no way I can afford that.

Share your personal experiences with the 12 bolts and 9 inches and how far you have actually gone with them. ( Ex. E.T's)

Re: Need to have a rear discussion with the regulars.

well unfortunately strange, moser, etc. will all tell you you need a 9 inch. without the spray, the 12-bolt would be fine. all of that added HP though on a hard launch will negate the 12-bolt.

IMHO, if you're unable to afford the 9 inch, get a progressive controller so you can wait to bring all of the nitrous in.

just my $.02

Re: Need to have a rear discussion with the regulars.

i'm with 86 on the progressive controller. the 12 bolt still has the pitfalls of the 10bolts but can last longer because of it's beefier construction. OTOH i have seen plenty of people hit the 12bolts just as hard as a 9" without repercussion. the only thing i have to say about the particular unit you're looking at is that Moser uses a thread-in style torque arm mount on their 12 bolts and they're prone to backing out...so a quick check under the car before hitting the track isn't a bad idea.

how good is a good deal? that will probably be your ultimate decision making factor honestly.

and is $3400 loaded with brakes and all? that seems a little higher then when we bought the 9" that's in my car from them a few years ago. we bought our brakes seperate though, and already had a center section so all we got from them was the housing and axles.

mine has stood up to a decent pounding, but i've only been 1.56 to the 60' marker...

Re: Need to have a rear discussion with the regulars.

The 12 bolt and 9" are equally strong but they both also have good and bad things about them. The factory 9" can only handle so much but it doesn't take much to make it far superior to anything that can be done to the 12 bolt.

If you look under the back of many race cars, not just the door cars, you'll find a 9" or something similar like a Dodge 8-3/4 or an old Olds diff.

I only run 31 spline axles in my 9" but with the powerglide, I'm still under the 200x safety margin according to the Moser axle calculator. If I had a 3 speed, I would need to upgrade to 33 or 35 spline axles.

I doubt you'll find many people who have spent the money for a 9" then swapped in a 12 bolt instead to get a comparison of the 2.

The rear in question is $1500-1700. It's brand new never ran. Moser 12 bolt with 33 splines and spool. It also has brakes as well. There like $2200+ new.

How does your set up run with your combo? How much do you have invested in that S60? HAvn't seen you around this board before?

Re: Need to have a rear discussion with the regulars.

i haven't ran the new combo yet. i'll see on 9/19 at Cecil. i'll let you know.
I bought this rear when i was still employed at Ray Barton Racing Engines and go special employee pricing through Strange. My cost was $1,800 plust shipping. The rear has locker with 4:11's, 35 spline axles and the black Strange cover and the 93-97 dics brake brackets. i was fortunate to get this rear at this price. i bought my driveshaft, adjustable shocks and master cylinder from Strange also at great prices.
I just joined about 2 months ago. I go on Ls1tech alot. I'm kenss on there. I just found out about this site. I wish i would have alot earlier.

Look in to quickperformance for 9"
I did and it did not cost $3000
35 spline axles too

Re: Need to have a rear discussion with the regulars.

got a 35 spline moser 9" here and couldn't be happier. We also have several other cars in my circle that are running these or the 40 spline version. Get a spool and an aluminum center section. Call up bob at exotic performance plus, he's a sponsor on ls1tech. Tell him I sent you there, I wrote his how-to sheet for assembling these things. Get GM housing ends put on and you can run lt1 rear brakes if you like or spend the coin for strange brakes, etc.

Re: Need to have a rear discussion with the regulars.

I'm running the Strange 12-bolt. Have gone 1.32 60'. Car weighs 3750. I've known too many people that have had to beat the floor up to fit a Torque Arm on a 9-inch. I'd go with a 12-bolt again. No experience with the Dana but may be a good option.

I love the 12 bolt. The stock 12 sucks, but the aftermarket fixes all the stock 12 bolt shortcomings.

Here is the #2 fastest LSx record that i know for a fact has a 12 bolt.

2)LMR/WORMBOY 7.98 @175 (single turbo)

Tap the holes clean with a brand new tap, use good Grade 8 bolts with liberal red loctite (and a flat washer), and torque to 80ft-lbs. Mine have never come loose since I put them in.

For that price it should be under the car already.

Picked mine up for 1500$ with LS1 rear brakes and the calipers already ground for a 15 inch wheel.

Re: Need to have a rear discussion with the regulars.

Definately check out Quick Performance Doug will treat ya right and pushes more rearends out of that shop than you can shake a stick at. I ordered my moser 9" through him, then had him order and set up my Strange center section/full spool/1350 yoke,31 spline axles, disc brakes and got outta there for $2300. Just scroll down and price things out a bit.

You never go wrong doing it right the first time, end up spending more fixing it later. I only have one buddy i bracket race with that runs a 12 bolt, but that's in his 70 chevelle, and he's on #4 in 4 years, yes he's heavy at 3940lbs but is only running low 11's, he's constantly replacing carriers that are imploding which then flub up the gear teeth too.

Just cuz it's a cheap buy in initally does'nt mean it's a great long term investment.....not to mention IF you ever wanna change gearing, 12 bolts are a PITA since you have to either drop the whole diff outta the car, or take the whole car someplace...with a 9" you pull the center section and go...best part, if you know anybody that mud packs, you'll have gearing of all sizes if ya need it. I mulled my drivetrain over a bunch before pulling the trigger, and the pro's vs cons of the 9" just kept shining through so that's what we went with and have been very happy thus far, only gone 1.32 60' measured off the rear tires tripping the beams, but when ya figure how heavy i am, it's seeing some abuse back there...

Re: Need to have a rear discussion with the regulars.

got a moser 12 and have put down 1.56 60's. FYI: the guy a moser told me that they put one of there 12 bolts in the 8's and had no problems, but he didn't mention if it was done on motor, boost, or juice so the large torque gain from juice if used at the starting line my play a factor in durability. Personally for under 2000 bones, i agree with onebad82z that thing would be under the car, because i paid 2400 for mine.

Re: Need to have a rear discussion with the regulars.

for a street/strip car i would prob. run a strange 12 bolt w/eaton hd diff. its lighter and slightly better fitting than the 9". (stock size axle tubes) you can also keep your abs if you have a 4th gen car.
if you plan on beating it hard with a manual trans and slicks you will have to run a spool. the diff's just cant take the beating for long, even the eaton hd.

for a drag car, you cant go wrong with the 9". better gear selection, availability, and you can set up 2 different pumpkins to use in the car.
