How tight on roller rockers?

I have Scorpian Roller Rockers on my AFR 195 heads. The cam and lifters are Hydro Flatt Tappett.

I pulled the valve covers yesterday to find that two of the rockers are very tight and the rest are loose. They will wiggle side to side about
80 thousands. That number is a guess but you get the idea?

Re: How tight on roller rockers?

On a hydraulic lifter, none should be "loose". All should be tightened to the same spec for a hydraulic lifer, roller rocker or not, and always feel like they are "under pressure".

Can slip a feeler gauge between the rod & rocker? If so, those need to be tightened, but there is a specific sequence & point/torque at which they need to be tightened.

Re: How tight on roller rockers?

When the valve is closed you should have some play in the rockers. I asked on here not to long ago and the norm was 1/2 turn past zero lash. Just get your motor to TDC and find the list of rockers you can adjust(off top of my head I cant remeber which ones) and then spin the motor a revolution and adjust the other half. I thought you had a roller cam that makes your 1/4 mile times thta much more impressive with a flat tappet! Nice job and good luck.

Re: How tight on roller rockers?

I just checked the clearance with a feeler guage and I couldn't fit a .0012 guage between the rocker and valve. There sitting tight on the valves. Is it possible there suppose to be a bit wiggley until the cam lobe is up?

I think you're looking at a completely normal situation. You shouldn't be able to get a feeler gauge under a rocker with hydraulic lifters. It is possible that the force being applied isn't enough to eliminate all side-to-side wiggle, but when a valve is open, being opened, or on the way to being closed, the force could keep you from wiggling the rocker with your fingers.

Re: How tight on roller rockers?

Zero lash
1/4 turn on nut
snug allen lock
1/4 turn (both nut and lock togather)

You will have side to side movement on all rockers where the valve is closed!

Re: How tight on roller rockers?

Roll the motor by hand, and whenever a cylinder has a valve fully open (or nearly all the way open), adjust the other valve for that cylinder. And I agree-on a hydro roller, contact plus 1/4 turn. None should be really tight unless you have valve recession.
