abusing the old LG4

I had a real good time racing tonight in my z28. The tired hand-me-down bottom end stayed true and to be honest I think it liked the thrashing. It may have earned it's self some ported heads and cam I have sitting around collecting dust.

Out of my five runs my best ET was 15.5 @ 89.7mph and my best MPH run was 15.7 @ 90.09mph.

My best 60' was 2.304 and the worst was 2.566. I'm thinking tires should be the next step? I tried heating them, not heating, launching off idle, launching off breaks. Nothing worked, either slipping bad or not leaving hard enough.

Going by that mph, you should be able to pull at least a 15.20, possibly better once you get those 60' times down. Just to give you an idea, mine did a 15.21 @ 90 mph with a 2.19 60'. It was the first time ever at the track and my times went from 15.80's to the best time just with a little throttle control off the line. All I did was instead of mashing the throttle, I quickly rolled into it. Now if I had some sticky tires, I'd have just mashed it. This was on the stock size 215/65/15 tires at 30 psi still.

Thanks for the tip man. You are probably right too, I didn't try rolling into the throttle. With the secondaries working as good as they are on this CCC Qjet it's hard to not want to mash the peddle.

I think it's rich too because I was trying to over-come the quardabog when going WOT with richer rods/hangers because adjusting the tension spring wasn't helping, and I actually ruined a spring going tighter and tighter until it gave out. What took away the bog 100% was cutting a slot in the front of each air valve; there's a thread on here where Fast355 shows us how to do this. It works like you wouldn't believe.

Right now it has B hanger and CK rods. It would be great if there was a kit with assorted rods and hangers for these carbs because JET and Edelbrock charge ridiculous prices for individual pieces.

A bog that can't be tuned out with the AV tension is a sure sign of a bad choke pull-off.

I've heard that before but I tried 2 different pull-offs and it didn't help. That's not to say that I didn't try 2 bad pull-offs because I very well could have, they were both old and well used but were pressurizing when the motor was running.

The AV mod is great though it makes a huge difference. I drove and tuned on this car for at least 9 years now and it never transitioned to WOT like it does now, from idle, off idle, cruising at 50mph, it likes it all.

Re: abusing the old LG4

Also if any of you have any insight on this that would be great;

My last run of the night during eliminations when my transmission shifted into 3rd (its th200c) the trans made the shift and the rpm's dropped after the shift for a moment and then started climbing. My TCC was acting up on the way to and from the track, it simply wasnt working at all because I forgot to adjust the TPS after messing with the idle before leaving for the track.

The end was a 15.82 @ 80.5 mph. And I should add that run was my fastest 1/8th of the day going 71.07 mph.

good to see you at the track the other night . If I get new drag radials , I will let you borrow my nittos so you can see the differance, i just cant hook consistant with them. for everybodys info the DA that night was 2850. so I believe you could easily run 14's with the nittos and good air. my best run for the night was 13.37 @101.85 with a 1.87 60 ft. which corrects to a 12.92 in perfect air. hope to see you at NTR again.

Good seeing you there too man. Your IROC is nice I bet you got a good 30 more HP in the tune too. It's crap you can't have a laptop out there, where else are you supposed to do 100mph rips at to tune?

The tires would be great to give a go, it would probably make a huge difference. These old discount tire bottom barrel tires aren't doing me any favors. I think my next fix for this car is going to be a rear end and some tires. With a open 2.73 and crap tires I can't expect much.

Also while I'm blabbing away I think I figured out what the deal was with 3rd gear. My transmission was at least a quart low I think the front seal is leaking from the looks of it.

I went through and checked out the carb and swapped the secondary metering rods and hanger to a "I" hanger and "DR" rods that should lean it out a bit.
