How competitive are 3rd gens in Auto X

My friend with a prelude at school invited me to an autocross event on the 27th

My car is bone stock with 305tbi 700r auto and im wondering how it will do in autocross.

From what i have heard these cars tend to do well and from what i feel it should do okay but just want some advice

And for this first race i want it stock however im wonderign what my first mod should be a subrfame connector? ( i was also wondering if these subframe connectors affected work space?)
Thanks

Tires and sub-frame connectors are a good starting point. If you really are interested in the sport than I'd suggest looking at an aftermarket suspension.

Heres a shot of the underside of my 85 Z28, that I am building for Autocross/street car. Basicly I just want a really good handling street car that I can have fun with at an autocross event. Lots of time and $ in suspension mods here......hope this gives you some ideas.......

Re: How competitive are 3rd gens in Auto X

Depending on the subframe connectors that you install you could end up in a class where you wouldn't be competitive at all. Make sure you thoroughly go through all the class rules before doing any mods.

Re: How competitive are 3rd gens in Auto X

SFCs will bump you up so far into a class that unless you have a LOT more mods & are a really good driver? You'll get slaughtered on course. They aren't needed to run & you can still have a lot of fun without them.

3rd gens handle really great for autocross. Auto trannies can be tricky to drive on a course, when the tranny is trying to downshift for itself in a tight turn or under hard acceleration.

Your local club may have a local class that allows more typical street mods on a car that doesn't put it into Modified Class. I know my local club has one, that allows stuff like SFCs, yet doesn't put the car into Modified.

Actually in Stock Class, you are only allowed to changer the FILTER, not the whole housing.

13.10.A. The engine air filter element may be removed or replaced provided the air flow path remains as originally designed (i.e., no additional openings). No other components of the air induction system may be removed, replaced, or modified.

Your chrome air cleaner puts you in Street Prepared:

15.10.E. Air cleaner(s) may be changed or removed, velocity stacks may be added.

Re: How competitive are 3rd gens in Auto X

First time out I would suggest you leave it all stock, just replace anything that is worn, loose or broken. Just register as "non-competition" (in other words, you're out there to have fun/learn, not in for the points race), or stock (is it still f-stock?)...

Is your TBI car a z28/Iroc/TA/GTA/Formula? I believe even some of the base models got good suspensions with the right options, but one of the performance models could be quite competitive the way it came from the factory. Similar condition setup with a similar driver any decent 3rd gen should be faster then a Prelude, but for the most part, the driver will make a bigger difference WRT to times then the car.

Anyway, after getting out there and getting a good handle on it if you get bit by the bug you may decide that you want to run one of the stock classes, so spending money on most mods before hand would be a waste. Typically if you start doing some of the stuff that gets you into the prepared classes you have to have a pretty serious setup and know what you're doing to be competitive again, so I wouldn't suggest that for beginners.

I just signed up today for a novice autocross course in my area... I'm not looking to compete, I've done a lot of mods to my car suspension wise, and minor motor mods, headers, etc... I'm just lookin to have fun with my Firebird

This is going to sound odd to someone new to the sport, but the biggest mod for "stock" class is going to be R-compound tires.

Strangely enough, the street tire classes allow more suspension mods than stock class, but require street tires (with a tread wear rating of I think 140+).

Best first mod and is legal in the stock class, Koni shocks and struts.

GMan, what kind of r-comps are F-stock legal? I didn't think A6's were ok until ESP?

Hoosier A6s are legal in Stock. As are Kumho V710s and Victoracers, Toyo Proxes and Yokohama A048s.

If this is your first time autocrossing ever, don't worry about performance and mods. Just drive what you have and learn as much as possible your first time out. Be humble: there will probably be people there in tiny Hondas that will smoke everybody (especially if the course is designed by an import guy!). Learning the course and seeing the cones is the hardest part; just go by the saying, "Slow is smooth and smooth is fast." Oh, and have fun!

Re: How competitive are 3rd gens in Auto X

From going to the autocross in Cumberland I was told

first mod=> tighten the loose nut behind the wheel with practice
-no one will do great the first few times
-learn to look ahead and see the course

second mod after you have a couple of events in =>tires!!! (run on street tread first)

(I'm still on first mod myself)

stx or stu with street tires are a good class to start in

You really gotta work at it to get your car into the Modified classes. I've been going over my mods & what classes I go into and the highest one I came up to was CXP, and thats even with an engine swap, trans swap, full bolt ons and custom SFC's.

Not really. If a local club sticks to the letter of the rules & doesn't vary? It isn't hard to bump up to the next class by just a single mod.

Re: How competitive are 3rd gens in Auto X

As the others said that since would be your first time out, just make sure your car will pass tech and have a good time. After you get addicted to it (which you probably will) then start looking at the rulebook and see which class you want to go in.

for example, in FS the only things you can do are DOT legal tires(like A6, v710,etc.) , Shocks, front(not rear) swaybar, and air filter(Stock fitting replacement).

The next classes your car would go in this order.
Street Touring Extreme (STX): Allows more suspension changes, cold air intake, full exhaust(must retain all emissions),sub frame connectors(bolt-on ONLY, and 3 attachment points max per side), bushings(non metal), must be on 140+ tread wear tires, and various other things, but it would clutter the page up.

then E Street Prepared: everything from STX, update/backdate(put all the good parts from the same generation car like having a 350tpi, with a 5-speed etc.), DOT R-comps, weld in sub frame connectors allowed(3 attachment points max per side, and not attached to floor pans), and again many more things that would clutter the page.

then it would go to Street Modified(SM) > C Prepared (CP) > Some crazy mod class (probably EM)

There are alot of small things that can put you in a class where you typically won't stand a chance in.
like if you did nothing but take the rear seats out, it would put you directly to SM.
So I would strongly suggest reading the rulebook which can be viewed Here.
And if it doesn't specifically say you can, then you can't.

Addicted?

Wow, I went Saturday to a beginner Autocross class (drive the course with no instruction, then spend all day working / learning / driving and at the end of the day, drive the course again with what you've learned... it was a blast... Though I didn't take my Firebird, (still working on it), I look forward to the day I can.... I know there are many different groups in the area & not sure what you've done to your car, or if upgrading will dictate what class your are in, but I guess my point is, have fun... I had a blast... I have a 91 firebird, TPI, 5 Speed with basic mods.... which is fun for me... Am I gonna be competitive with the guy with the $80k Lotus Elise that weighs 2500lbs with 300 hp? Nope... but I had fun trying & improving on my personal times...

Re: How competitive are 3rd gens in Auto X

I have a video on facebook of me taking my 89 firebird. I think it all depends on how they make the track. When i went it wasnst at the speedway here it was in the parking lot of a local casino. The track was extremely small with really tight corners. I didnt do to hot. The announcer was cracking jokes the entire time asking me where my ****** was. he said it was the first time he had ever seen a 3rd gen firebird at autox
