Check out my times-- what do you think?

The times are corrected for elevation. My last trip to the track, I had the chip, headers, cat-back, free mods, tires, K&Ns, no ignition parts. Up at Bandimere Speedway in Colorado (6200 ft I think) I was running consistant 15.6s at 89.9 MPH.

Get some better tires for the strip. Z rated tires are not designed for drag racing.

I've looked into new gears, but they are freaking EXPENSIVE!!!! And my Z-rated tires hook up great, I have no traction problems.

For the gears, why not just head out to a scrap yard and look for an 83 to 86 Camaro/Firebird? Some of those came with 3.73's.

Dan..those times aren't too bad for that elevation. I know what it's like to race at high altitudes. When I lived in Albuquerque (5000+ ft) stock LT1s were running mid to low 15s at a slightly higher mph than you.

You're corrected times sound accurate also. When I raced in El Paso (4000 ft) and San Diego (sea level) the difference was 8 tenths and 8 mph in the quarter with no other changes to the car.

Have you ditched any weight? A really nice mod is to use the aluminum front bumper impact bar off certain 4cyl and 84 Z-28 cars. There is a salvage yard in Greeley (Anderson's) that had several last time I was up there. I have not installed mine yet due to the amount of work but hope to have it on by Spring. BTW, my car ran a best of 16.2 (uncorrected) at Bandimere's last test & tune session in October. Traction was a real problem.

Your street tires won't hook when you get 3.73's, so I would start thinking about either some drag radials or maybe just a set of slicks to bolt on at the track. That is a pretty descent timeslip ( the corrected time)for an engine w/ the minor mods you have. Some cars just run better stock than others, I had an 88 IROC w/ a TPI 305, that didn't run near as as fast as the 89 RS w/ a TBI 305 that I have now, so I think you got one of the faster stock cars. I guess that on mass produced, production engines, every now and then, some of them have truly optimum clearances. I can't tell you how many times I've pulled out stock engines for a rebuild, and found only .001" to .0015" main and rod clearances, or .004" to .006" end play, or rod side to side clearance so tight that each adjacent rod had turned blue due to the heat of a tight clearance. Very rarely does a stock engine have ALL the clearances correct, but some do, and those run better than the rest.
