Odd combo here....what are my chances??

A friend of mine is in the midst of purchasing a 1988 RX7. The only thing is, it has a Ford 5.0 in it. The engine is carbed, hes not sure where its from and its backed by that wonderful (yeah right) Ford AOD tranny. He says that it might be from an 82 GT, but as I said, hes not sure. The engine is bone stock.

Bottom line tho, do I stand a chance against this with my current setup?? I think I do, he seems to think that hes gonna leave me far behind him!!

The ford 5.0 is a much better designed and built engine than the chev 305. Depending on how heavy the rx7 is and what the gearing is, I'd say you're going to lose.

Yeah, if it was a newer 5.0, he's smash me, but this is an ancient, carbed 302 backed by quite possibly the worst automatic transmission ever created. for all we know, this could be a 140 hp 5.0 from an old crown victoria that redlines at like 4000 RPM, right?

Hard to call... Your car is a low to mid 15 second car in stock form. For all you know, that RX-7 could be packing a built carb 302 with 300+hp. Who would go through an engine swap just to run a ****ty, slow engine?

But if it really is bone stock like your friend says... you'll tear it apart. Early 80s 5.0 Mustangs had like 160hp stock.
