(weight transfer) best bang for the buck? What makes a 3rd gen hook!
I'm a broke 21 year old college student that has built an 86 Iroc with a 383 tpi with gobbs of torque.
What is the best bang for the buck when it comes to traction? I already know tires will, but I want my car to hook off the suspension.
I don't care about handling and cornering I want launching!!!!!, I'm talking about good 60 foot times. I know there is a lot of free mods when it comes to horsepower but what about suspension.
also what are lca's.
I've taken off the front sway bar , got a glass hood, relocated the battery, hulled out the bumpers, got an aluminum radiator, took off the smog and air.
What about v6 springs do they work?, what are a good pair of front shocks(for a decent price) even though wore out ones transferr pretty well.
I really don't want to put skinnys on the front.
what good is horsepower if ya don't hook! I want to leave stangs at the line!
what have you done to make a car hook and how well did it work.
I think I'm the only street racer in MS that drives a 3rd gen camaro and that leaves very little help for me. I'm beginning to link my car is a dying breed!
I'll appreciate any advice.

Ummm.... you have shocks up front?
I use v-6 springs front and back, worn out struts up front and a little stiffer shock in back and a set of slicks. Of course no swaybar, battery in back, etc....
For the street, run ET Streets.

Well I have struts up front(wore out ones), but I think being wore out may help the front end rise.
I would like to run drag radials to keep a sleeper effect. With my 4" coul everyone thinks I got a big block. But.... The 383tpi with the 262xm comp cam & 1.6 roller rockers is quieter than a sewing machine so they so they don't know what they are getting into.
3rd gen camaros with tpi are rare at home and I haven't yet found one to run faster than 8.90 in an 1/8.
That alone makes me a sleeper no matter what my appearance. That sad!!!
But I be da@# if I don't use to my advantage

I believe that v6 and v8 rear springs are the same. Only the v6 spring rate is less in the front.

Worn out struts usually help because they are softer. The better route is drag struts that have adjustable extension (soft) and compression (hard) settings.
The drag radials will help with the sleeper look, but the ET streets will have a lot better traction.

TIRES!!!!!!!!!!
only one part of a car can actually grip the road, the TIRES!!!!!
i would suggest looking for some cheap rims at a swap meet or off the classifieds and find some tires. tires aren't a really terrible expense, if ya just use them for racing they can last you a couple years. i run hoosier quick time pro's, they lasted all the way through last season and they have enough tread to make it through at least one more.
also 50/50 shocks for the back are cheap. rear control arm relocators and if any of your friends knows how to weld, box the the stock control arms and torque arm. also switch both to poly bushings.
and now my favorite topic, WEIGHT CONTROL
try to axe weight from the front of the car, the less that is up front the better the weight distribution, and better transfer. moving the battery to the back would can be done with a relocation kit and a safety switch for about $70. that takes about 40lbs off the front and puts it on the back.
hope some of this helps

LCA are Lower Control Arms.
There is one on each side of your rear axle, helps hold it in place. The stock LCA's are ok. With your 383 you could probably gain something from modding or replacing them.
SLP had stock LCA's with a 1/4 plate welded to them to stiffen them up so they don't deflect. The SLP part has harder urthane bushings.
You could get your old LCA's reinforced and order some bushings. When I looked at doing this for my 99 T/A LS1, (same rear suspension) it was going to be $65 for the bushings and $30 to get the LCA's welded up. SLP had the same thing for $110 or a tad more so it was worth it to just order new LCA's.
Also the Panhard rod, it runs side to side in the rear suspension could be replaced with a reinforced one with harder bushings. SLP also has these they cost about $60.
Lakewood and others have LCA's so you might want to check around.

A good tubular torque arm that is mounted to the floor instead of the tranny makes a tremendous difference also. Even a stock one with some 3/4 DOM tubing welded in the rounded indentions and a polyurethane torque arm bushing works well - I used that set-up for a long before fabbing a nicer, floor mounted, tubular one. But I have to agree with NJ SPEEDER, if I had to choose only one, it would surely be TIRES.

youd be suprised what a difference just putting the drag radials on did....you can get about 3000miles out of them on the street and with a quick burnout and 18psi they hook great!

Z-BOSS finally another MS dude. They're hardly any TPI cars running around here anymore. There's not even many 3rd gens going to the track either - which one you go to,, or what part of the state do you race? I ditto the tires.

The "bone stock" that rocks!
I’m from Jackson (Central MS for the out of state readers). Well,, there is a so called track in Canton (about 20 miles north),, but the only thing I’d run down it is a lawn mower. The closest “real” tracks are Lena (about 90 miles east – for Saturday racing) and Hattiesburg (about 90 miles south – for Sunday racing). I have gone to Baton Rouge,, just for a change of scenery, but not often. I could see myself making a trip to Memphis sometime. This is my first modified EFI car, so I may look into the NMCA EFI rules,, but I hate bracket racing.
There are a few TPI cars still in daily use around here. One kid at Gateway tire supposedly has a ZZ3(I think) with the TPI on it,, but I’ve yet to see it run and there’s a guy at Big 10 Tires that has a loud one that smokes, again supposed to be fast,, but I’ve yet to see it run either. One friend has a bone stock 1991 305 TPI that is really nice (high miles though). The next door neighbor, former President of the Central MS Camaro Club has a super fine well taken care of 84 HO that still looks new (for sale).
If I go to Memphis this year,, I'll try to contact you.
